Description
Nov. 9, 1943. F. o. DAVIS 3 HOSE NOZZLE Eiled March 10, 1942.
Patented Nov. 9, 1943 UNITED ST ATE HOSE NOZZLE Floyd 0. Davis, Jackson County, Mo.
Application March 10, 1942, Serial No. 434,065
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in hose nozzles.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a hose nozzle havingnovel means by which it may be made to project a solid stream of water, or various forms of diverging sprays, or to be used as a sprinkler.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel hose nozzle, which is simple in structure, cheap to make, strong, durable, not likely to get out of order and which is easy to operate by an unskilled person, and is efficient in its operation.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of my improved hose nozzle, shown adjusted to be used as a sprinkler.
Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in elevation and partly in central vertical section, of my improved nozzle, showing it adjusted for use in projecting a solid stream.
Fig. 3 is a front end view of the nozzle.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
5 designates an inner member having at its rear end an internally screw threaded portion adapted for releasable attachment to a hose, not shown. 2 designates an axial longitudinal water passage, closed at its front end, and into which the hose, when attached, discharges. 3 is a transverse passage at the front end of and communicating with the passage 2. The front end of the inner member I has a forwardly tapering conical axial valve 4.
Encircling the inner member I is a forwardly flaring outer member 5, the rear end of which is internally screw threaded and fitted in an externally threaded portion 6 of the inner member I. The rear end of the outer member 5 is externally threaded and has fitted on such portion an internally threaded collar I having an inner annular groove 8 containing packing 9 which encircles and bears on the threaded portion 6.
The outer member 5 has a central chamber I0, which extends rearwardly from the front end of the outer member 5, said chamber I6 having at its rear end a circular axial opening in which is slidabiy and rotatably snugly fitted the inner member I. The rear end of the chamber II] has an inner annular groove II in which is fitted packing l2, which bears against the. periphery of the inner member I.
The front end of the central chamber II] has an axial discharge opening I3, into which is adapted to be extended the conical valve 4, for creating a spray, when the outer member 5 is adjusted to near its rearmost position. By turning the outer member in the proper direction, it may be adjusted to have the valve 4 close the opening I3. The outer member may be adjusted forwardly from the closed position to the position shown in Fig. 2, when a solid stream will be discharged through the opening I3. When a stream is to be discharged through the opening I3, the transverse passage 3 communicates with the central chamber I0.
By turning the outer member 5 forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, the transverse passage 3 communicates with the outer chamber I4, which encircles the side wall of the central chamber Ii). The front end of the outer member 5 has outwardly diverging perforations I5 arranged in a group encircling the discharge opening I3. The water passing through the passages 2 and 3 into the outer chamber I I will be discharged through the perforations I5, in the manner of a sprinkler.
Byunscrewing the outer member 5 forwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1, the outer member 5 will detach from the threaded portion 6 of the inner member I, after which the outer member 5 may be slid forwardly off from the member I, for the purpose of inspection or cleaning of the interior of the members.
It will be noted that the width of the annular flange containing the groove II and packing I2 is of sufficient width to close the transverse passage 3 can at no time discharge simultaneously into the inner chamber I0 and the outer chamber I4, while at the same time permitting different rates of discharge through the opening I3, or the openings I5.
Many modifications of my invention, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
A hose nozzle comprising an inner member having means at its rear end for attachment to a hose, and having at its front end an axial valve, and having extending from its rear end a longitudinal passage, adapted to communicate with the hose and terminating at its front end in a. transverse passage extending to the periphery of said inner member, and an outer member having an outer chamber encircling said inner member, said outer member having its rear end encircling, revoluble on and having screw threaded engagement with said outer member so as to be turned thereon to a foremost position and to a rearmost position, said outer member having an inner chamber extending from its front end rearwardly and spaced from the rear end of said outer chamber and concentric with said inner member, and having at its rear end an inner annulal! fi'P F gH y? E-QX -P r e eb fitted on s'aid nner ember, and which crosses, and is of WT th s'ifliieht to close said transverse either to the other of said two positions, said transverse passage being disposed to discharge into said outer chamber when said annular flange is forward thereof, and to discharge into said inner chamber when said flange is at the rear of said transverse passage, the front of said outer member having an axial discharge opening communicating with said inner chamber and which is closed by said valve when said outer member 4. 1125 egimes? ien, the ront o s Outer v with said outer chamber.
