Patented Nov. 3, 1931 v y EDISTATES PATENT 1 OFFICE FLOYD A. SIMS LEO PJUPHOFF, OF SAN OSE, CALIFORNIA" NOZZLE Application filed May 31, 19 30. Seria 1 N0. 458,372.
This invention relates particularly to the ,type of nozzles used upon'the ordinary garden hose. for sprinkling water upon lawns and gardens, 7 I It is the object of the invention to provide a nozzle of the character indicated that will be economicalto manufacture, of few parts, simple in form and construction, quickly and easily assembled, and highly efficient inits practical application. V V
In the drawings: j V Figure 1 is aside elevation ofa portion of a hosewith our improved nozzle mounted Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through a nozzle embodying'ou'r inven tion. J I
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the nozzle. Figure 4 is a rearfelevation of the nozzle. Figure 5 is a perspective illustration of the nozzle in use, partly in section and part broken away. I g In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed we show at 1 the body of the nozzle, this being merely an annular member threaded at 2 for engaging a hoseand having an inwardly directed flange 3 formed on its forward end to form a circular openinga.
At 5 we show a thin sheet-metal disc of such size as to dro readily into the body 1 where it is held 'rmly against the flange 3 by a standard rubberwasher 6 and the 7 coupling 7 of hose 8 when the nozzle is screwed tightly intoposition.
, The disc 5 is concavo-convex in form throughout its central portion lying within theconfines of the opening4,-the convexside of the disc being directed inwardly toward the discharging water, the two sides being indicated by the reference numerals 9 and 10 respectively. In the present case the whole central portion of the disc is pressed outwardly so as toenter the opening 4 as shown at 11, thereby forming an annular channel or pocket 12 at the rearof the disc. In the center of the disc,' and extending across its center, is formed an oblong rectangular slotthree, and the area of the slot being substan- 5 tially one-sixth of the area of the disc.
The form and proportion of the slot 13 relative to the size and conformation of the disc, and the size of the chamber immediately in the rear of the slot and defined by the enclosing washer 6, is highly important, and
but little variation can be allowed if the best results are desired. The disposition of the slot 13 in the very center of the dished disc and extending equally both ways from the center is an exceedingly important feature of the invention as will appear in view of the following explanation. v
.When the. nozzle is in use water under pressure bears equally against the entire inner face, orsurface 10, of the disc. If the disc werefiat the water would be discharged But since i the water discharging overedges 14 slightly in advance of the water discharged over edges 15, and with somewhat augmented velocity,
impinges upon the main stream both from above and below as indicated by arrows 16,
thereby flattening the stream out into a plane lying at right angles to the long axis of the slot 13. This action is clearly shown in Figure 5 wherein the arrows 17 indicate the normal direction of flow of the water over edges 15.
In order to secure the results as described above, it is necessary that the chamber immediately to the rear of the disc 5 be large enough to permit the water to enter the slot 13 freely from all sides. It has been found that the area of the opening defined by the washer 6 must be not less than five times the area of the slot so that the water will be fed as freely over the corners of the slot as over the side and end edges. The forming of the pocket 12 around the slot 13 renders the action of the device positive and insures even feeding of the water through the slot under varying pressures.
It is to be understood, of course, that while We have herein shown and described but one specificembodiment of the invention,
changes in iorm, construction, and method of assembly and operation may bemade Within the scope of the appended claim.
lVeclaim:
A nozzle of the character described comprisinga thin dished disc having an oblong V slot formedihereinand extending both ways V from the center thereof, and means 'for mounting he same on'the end of a hose with its dished face directed outwardly. I I FLOYD A; SIMS. LEOP. UPHOFF.
