2 claims. (c1. 5-24'0 This invention relates to bed structures and more particularly to an improved spring and mattress for infants cribs, which spring and mattress will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture and highly efficient in use.
It is an object of this invention to provide a spring and mattress assembly which will be highly flexible and which will readily yield to any load applied thereto.
Another object of this invention is. to provide an improved spring structure by the use of a relatively inexpensive fibre panel which will freely yield to the thrusts of a body weight applied to the mattress.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a spring and mattress structure embodying our invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the sub-structure of our new spring and mattress assembly;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional detail view through the spring and mattress structure shown in Fig. 1 and at a slightly larger scale with respect thereto; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that of Fig. 3 with a load applied thereto.
As illustrated in the drawing, our improved bed structure I is a combined spring and mat-I tress comprising a wooden frame I I having parallel side rails I2 spaced from each other by end rails I3 to provide a rectangular frame adapted to be placed on a bedstead in the conventional manner. On the inner face of the side rails I2 there are formed a series of obliquely disposed grooves I4, and in each of thesegrooves is disposed an end portion of a wooden strip I5 which has a fibre structure having a high moment of elasticity to provide a leaf spring.
The spring arrangement of our new bed structure is completed by placing a bafiie sheet I6 of relatively light cardboard or fibre over the top of the frame Il with a portion of the marginal edges il of the baiiie I6 overlying the top ,walls I8 of the rails I2 and I3. A plate I9 consisting preferably of a sheet of plywood has a film of glue 2U applied to its upper surface and the plate is pressed against the underside of the baffle The arrangement is such that the plate I9 provides a central sag eliminator for the baffle sheet I6 and also provides a bearing plate on the underside of the baffle sheet against which bearing plate I9 the free ends 2I of the wooden strips I5 bear to assist in supporting the center of the baffle sheet I6 in a horizontalposition. The plate I9, further, provides a bearing surface 22 against whichv the free ends 2| of the strips I5 engage for smooth sliding action which is otherwise not satisfactorily provided by the loosely compiled fibres of the baffle sheet I6.
A layer of ller 23 of felt, hair or other suitable pad filler is then laid over the baffle sheet I6 and a covering 24 such as canvas, muslin or the like arranged over the baie and filler with the sides 25 of covering 24 extending down and around the bottom of the frame Il where the covering is fastened to the frame by means of upholsterers tacks or any other well known means.
By this arrangement we have provided a combined spring and mattress structure which is Y assembled directly upon the frame structure II with the covering 24 and mattress filler 23 holding the baffle sheet I6 down upon the upper surface of the frame I I. Thus, the baffle sheet I6 is freely disposed on the frame I I with no fastening means between the sheet I6 and frame rails I2-l3 and by reason of this novel arrangement when a load is applied to the bed structure I6, as
` is shown in Fig. 4, the outer edges Il of the sheet I6 are free to move upwardly, the inner corner 26 of the rails acting as a fulcrum for the deflecting action of the sheet I6.
While Wooden leaf springs have been used in bed structures heretofore, the use of a fioating baflie in conjunction with such spring structure has a novel advantage over known structures, the baie being an integral spring unit in and of itself and being so arranged on the frame to provide al readily yieldable baflie throughout the entire area of the bed. l
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation means for securing said covering to said frame whereby to maintain said baille sheet on saidframe.
2. In a device of the class described including;
a rectangular frame having leaf spring means" v extending inwardly therefrom to provide a resilient support in the central area-of said frame, the combination of a baille sheet of relatively light pasteboard having marginal edges overlying said frame, a plate arranged on the underside of said baille sheet and providing a bearing surface having engagement with said spring means, a covering arranged over said baille sheet and extending downwardly and around said frame to maintain said barile sheet in position relative tov said frame, said baille sheet being adapted to deflect in its central area with its marginal edges free to elevate with respect to said. frame When a load is applied to said baille sheet.
