The central portion of the top wall 12 of the bracket 1 is provided with a circular hole l2 and this, as shown in Figure 4, is located between saidupperends of the shore forming timbers 6.
The bracket 8, like the bracket 1, is preferably in the form of a metal casting. It is shaped to receive the crossbar 9 and comprises an elongated retangular bottom wall I! and a pair of upstanding side walls E8. The bottom wall I] is appreciably longer than the top wall 12 of the fixed bracket 1 at the upper end of the shore and has a fiat bottom face, the central portion of which is adapted to rest upon the top wall I 2 of the bracket 1 when the two brackets are in their operative or-connected position; The side walls 13 of the bracket 8 are substantially coextensive' with,and are joinedto, the side margins of the bottom wall ll. They are spaced apart a distance corresponding to the width of the crossbar 9. The crossbar, as shown inFigures land 4, fits between the side walls l8 of the bracket 8 and rests upon the top face of the bottom wall l1. Lag screws l9 serve fixedly to-connectthe crossbar 9 to the bracket 8 and these screws extend upwards through holes 28 in the ends of the bottom wall ll. The bottom wall H of the bracket 8 is of uniform width from end to end and corresponds in width to the central portion of the top wall ii of the'bracket 'l. The holes 20 for the lag screws I8 are so positioned or located that they are disposedoutwards of the ends of the top wall l2 of the bracket 1 when the two brackets are in connected relation.
In addition to the brackets and 8 the head structure for the shore 5 comprises releasable means for connecting the two brackets together. This means comprises a pair or hooks 2| at one end of the bottom wall I! of the bracket 8 and a pivot type latch 22 at the other end of said bottom wall H. The hooks 2lare formed in tegrally with, and depend from, the bottom wall ll. They face or project inwards and are adapted to hook around and grip the adjacent'end of the top wall l2 of the bracket I when the bracket 8 is in place on the bracket 7, as shown in Figures 1 and 4. The latch 22 is in the form of a cast metal arm and -is pivotally supported by way of a bolt 23. The latter extends through a hole in the central portion of the latch and a hole 24 in the bottom wall I] of the bracket 8. It is preferably arranged so-that the head thereof is at the top and carriesa nut 25 at the lower end of its shank. The bolt 23 permits the latch to turn or rotate in aplane that is parallel to the bottom wall l7. One end of the latch 22 has a convex upper surface and is adaptedwhen the two brackets 'l and 8' are in engagement with one another to underlie the adjacent end of the top wall l2 of the bracket '1 and thus lock the two brackets together. The other end of the latch 22 is in the former a finger piece which permits the latch to be gripped in connection with turning or rotation-thereof. vWhen-the latch is turnedso astoswingthe end with the convex upper surface out of engagement with the adjacent end of the top wall [2 of the bracket l the bracket 8 is released and hence may be disconnected from the bracket I. A split washer 26 is mounted on the shank of the bolt 23 between the nut 25 and the central portion of the latch 22 and serves yieldingly to urge the latch upwards towards the bottom wall I! of the bracket 8. For the purpose of preventing lateral displacement of the bracket 8 relatively to the bracket 1 when the two brackets are in connected relation the bracket 8 is provided with a pair of depending lugs 21 and a pair of depending lugs 28. These lugs are formed integrally with, and depend from, the side margins of the bottom wall I l of the bracket 8. The lugs 2'! are located directly inwards of the hooks 21 and are adapted to straddle the adjacent reduced end of the top wall 22 of the bracket 1 when the bracket 8 is in place on the bracket I. The other lugs, that is, the lugs 28, are located inwards of the latch 22 and are adapted to straddle the adjacent reduced end of the top wall I 2, as shown in Figure l. The lugs 21 and 28 are so positioned that when the two brackets are' in connected relation they abut against the shoulders M at the ends of the side walls H? of the bracket 1. In order properly to center the bracket 8 with respect to the bracket '1 when the bracket 8 is applied to thebracket l the bracket 8 is provided with a depending annular flange 29. This flange is formed integrally with the central portion of the bottom wall ll of the bracket 8 and is adapted to fit within the circular hole 12 in the central portion of the top wall l2 of the bracket 1, as shown in Figure 4. When the flange 29 is disposed in the hole (2 it assists the lugs 21 and 23 in preventing lateral displacement of the bracket 8 with r.- spect to the bracket 1.
When it is desired to apply the crossbar 3 to the upper end of the shore 5 the latch 22 is turned or rotated into a position wherein it extends reversely to the bracket 8. Such bracket is then positioned angularly in order to bring the hooks 2! into hooked relation with the adjacent end of the top wall l2 of the bracket I, as shown in Figure l. After the hooks are brought into hooked relation with such end of the top wall 12 the bracket 8 is swung downwards into a position wherein the bottom wall l"! thereof fits flatly against the topsurface of the top wall 12 of the bracket 1. In connection with downward swinging of the bracket 8 the annular downwardly tapered flange 29 enters the hole I2 and the lugs 21 and 28 are brought into straddled relation with the reduced endsoi the top wall 52 of the bracket 1. After the bracket 8 is swung into place the latch 22 is turned so as to brin the end with the convex upper face into a position wherein it underlies the adjacent end of the top wall 12. Because of the convex surface on such end of the latch and the fact that the latch is urged upwards by the split washer 26 the latch grips the adjacentend of the top wall I2 with upward pressure. When it is desired to remove the crossbar 9 from the upper end of the shore 5 it is only necessary to turn the latch 22 out of gripping relation with the adjacent end of the top wall [2 of the bracket 1 and then swing the bracket 8 upwards and manipulate it out-of hooked relation withthe bracket 1.
. The herein described shore headstructure is essentially simple in designand hence it is capable of being producedat a low and reasonable cost. It may be quickly and readily assembled Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters -Patent is: I

A head structure for a shore, comprising a bracket provided-with means for connection to the upper end of the shore and having'a top wall with two opposed marginal portions thereof projecting outwards, and a secondbracket adapted to receive and retain a crossbar and embodying a bottom wall adapted to rest upon the top wall brackets are in connectedrelation to straddle the other bracket and prevent lateral displacement of said one bracket relatively to said other bracket. 7'

an elongated second bracket adapted to receive I and retain a crossbar and embodying a'r'ectan-' gular bottom wall adapted to rest upon, and extend lengthwise of, the top wall of the first mentioned bracket, provided at one end thereof with means for interlocking with one end of said top a wall and at its other end with a movably mount ed latch for gripping the other end of said top wall and releasably connecting the twobrackets together, and also provided at the central portion with respect to the top wall, one of said brackets being provided with side lugs adapted when the other bracket.
