This invention relates to'machinesfor use in the manufacture of shoes and more especiallyto a lasting machine providedfwithmeans for cementirig the edge of theupper over the edge of the insole inthe completion ofthe'lasting op-" eration. I v 7 Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus with which the upper maybe quickly and --efiiciently attachedtotheinsole in a novelmannen 1 a and attendant advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent from the detailed-description thereof which follows, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings inwhich I Figure 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus embodying my invention. Figure 2is a verticalsectionalvew of. the apparatus,.the section being taken on the line 2+-2 in Figure l; i A

the same. 7 4 A e 2 As illustrated in the drawings, the apparatus includes a bed plate lwhich-has the last supporting members 2 and 3 suitably: supported for vertical adjustment inthelopen center thereof,
' The top of the bed .plate is channeled transversely to provide runways for the opposing, slides. 4, 4 which carry the lasting side wipr'sYSj 5 at the top thereof. In a runway '6 extendingjlon'gitu dinally at one end of the 'bedlplate is mounted the slide 1 which carries at the top thetoe wiper- 8: A fixed lastingwiper 9 is mounted at the other end of the bedjplate and completes the wiping elements which are adapted to embrace and operate on the upper of the shoe during the lasting operation.
The slides 5, 5 and 1 which carry the side wipers and toe wiper respectively are simultaneously operated on the movement or the slide 1 by means of any suitable operating mechanism such as, for example, is illustrated in the prior application above referred to. As illustrated in Figure 1, the slide 1 has attached thereto the operating rods IA, IA which extend longitudinally construction of both apparatus is substantially in the bed plate to have the pins 18; 1B carried 1 thereby engage the cam-slots H1, I0 in the slides 5, 5; The cam slots 10, I0 arelso arranged that endwise movement of the slide 'l causes a simul- "taneous transverse movement of theslides- 5, 5 toward and awayfrom each-other so that the sideiwipers carried thereby simultaneously move in and out with the toe wiper 8; r
p The toe wiper is provided with" the extension 8A, 8A which project'under the ends oftheside wipers and bridge the space between the side Wipersandthe toe wipersoas' to provide a" continuous outline between themin anypositionofthese wipers and during the movement thereof." As illustrated inFigu're '1, the edges of the wipers in their movement contract the opening which they form from that outlined by the-soIidJline- -to-that of the dotted "line-and; .as' hereinafter pointed out, perform their functionduring this movement. 1

clamping mechanism carriedjbytheiarm l4 coml prisesa pair "of vertically spaced plates mane of which the upper plate is yieldingly "suspended fromi the arm 14 and isacleuiitedto be forced away 1 from the arm in a straight line movement bymeans 'ofthe rocking cam l 8." "Th latter is pivoted at H and byswinging the handie 20' toward the pivotal support'of the arm 14, the plate is forced downwardly by the cam l8 away from the arm M. A pair of pressure pins 2|, 2| project from the bottom of the plate It thru the plate I! for a purpose which will presently appear.
Thelower plate I1 is movably suspended from the upper plate It by the boltsv 23, 23 with suitable springs 24, 24 interposed between them so as to 12 which are inounted t'os'wing "on: the bed plate l support'the holding plate 13 yieldingly resist the movement of the upper plate toward the lower plate.
In the operation of the apparatus the upper of the shoe is placed between the lasting wipers with the heel of the upper against the fixed heel wiper and the back stay engaging into the notch 22 in the heel Wiper so as to properly locate the upper relative to the lasting wipers. The free edges of the upper which have been previously coated with a suitable cement are then folded out and over the edge of the wipers so as to have the cement coated surface face upward on the wipers as i1- lustrated in Figure 2. The holding plate I3 is swung in place over the wipers to hold these outturned edges of the upper in place on the wipers with the upper held suspended in the open center of the bed plate.
As illustrated in Figure 3 the last 25 is then inserted thru the opening in the holding plate which is just large enough to permit the last to pass therethru into the upper. Inserted with the upper or placed over the bottom of the last after it has been inserted into the upper is an insole 26 the edge of which is coated with a suitable cement for the attachment of the insole to the upper as will hereinafter be described.
After the insertion of the last and insole, the clamping mechanism is swung over the holding plate and then operated to have the plate I! rest on the holding plate and then yieldingly pressed thereagainst by the movement of the plate 56 toward the plate I! while the pressure pins engage the insole and force the insole and with it the last into the upper until the top of the last rests on the last supporting members 2 and 3, all as illustrated in Figure 4.
With the last thus held in place in the upper and the outturned edges of the upper held clamped between the lasting wipers and, the holding plate, the wipers are operated to move inwardly to wipe the outturned edges of the upper from under the clamping plate over the edge of the insole. This causes the cement coated edge of the upper to gradually fold over the cement coated edge of the insole until finally the edge of the upper is completely turned in over the edge of the insole and held in place thereover as illustrated in Figure 5. The two cement coated edges of the upper and the insole are thus brought together to provide a strongly cemented joint between them in the completion of thelasting operation.
As shown in the figures the edges of the upper are preferably skived which makes them more so as to permit the removal of the lasted upper for the attachment of an outer sole and completion of the shoe.
I claim:
1. In a lasting machine having a bed plate with an open center, a toe lasting wiper movable lengthwise and side lasting wipers movable widthwise of the bed plate and arranged to support the outturned edges of an upper within the open center of the bed plate; the combination of means for yieldingly holding the outturned edges of the upper on said wipers with a last located within the upper and an insole on the bottom of the last, and means for operating said wipers to move and draw the outturned edges of the upper around the bottom of the last and then cause these edges to slide completely from under the yielding holding means out of contact therewith and turn in the edges of the upper over the edge of the insole on the last below the wipers on the continued movement of the wipers and thereafter hold the inturned edges of the upper completely against the insole for adhesive attachment thereto.
2. In a lasting machine having a bed plate with 7 an open center, a toe lasting wiper movable lengthwise and side lasting wipers movable widthwise of the bed plate and arranged to support the outturned edges of an upper within the open center of the bed plate; the combination of a movable plate having an opening therethru adapted to move in place over the outturned edges of the upper so as to provide for the insertion of the last and insole into the upper thru said opening, means for yieldingly forcing said plate against the outturned edges of the upper, means for operating said wipers to move and draw the outturned edges of the upper around the bottom of the last and then cause these edges to slide from under the movable plate and turn in over the edge of the insole on the last below the wipers on the continued movement of the wipers, and means for holding the last in the upper during the operation of said wipers in turning the outturned edges of the upper over the edge ofthe insole supported on the last from under the movable plate.
3. In a lasting machine having a bed plate with an open center, a toe lasting wiper movable lengthwise and side lasting wipers movable widthwise of the bed plate and arranged to support the outturned edges of an upper within the open center of the bed plate; the combination of a movable plate adapted to move in place over the outturned edges of the upper, means for yieldingly forcingsaid plate against the outturned edges of the upper, means for operating said wipers to move and draw the outturned edges of the upper around the bottom of the last and then cause these edges to slide from under the movable plate and completely turn in over the edge portion of the insole on the last on the continued movement of the wipers, and means for holding the last in the upper during the operation of said wipers.
