Thisinvention relates to means-fer use inthe manufacture oi shoes, and'in'some oi its'aspects has more particular reference to means for'use'in lasting shoes. With the above and other objects in View, there is herein disclosed, in one important aspect of the invention, .a' novel construction'and arr-ange mentor" means for. holding the marginalportion are such that it will maintain that position without the aidof extraneousuholdin'g .or fastening means. Still further to accomplish the objects in view, the invention provides in a lasting machine novel means for applying to a shoe a device for holding the upper in lasted position. For use in applying about the upstanding marginal portion of the toe end of an upper a device such as hereinafter described, the construction shown comprises means for moving the device both heightwise of the shoe and lengthwise thereof independently of the toe wipers, together with means for controlling the device in such manner as to cause it properly to embrace the upstanding margin of the upper about the toe and thereafter to press and hold the upper firmly and evenly all around the toe in lasted relation to the insole.
The above and other features of the invention, including various novel details of construction and combinations of parts, will now be more particularly described by reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.

The means herein shown for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted relation to the lip a of an insole on a last comprises an upper-holding device adapted to be applied to the shoe after the toe-end portion of the upper has been wiped into lasted position, as by the V toe-embracing wipers 8 of the illustrated lasting machine, and also a member fastened to the insole and last and provided with means for maintaining the upper-holding device in operative position. The upper-holding device in the form illustrated comprises an upper-engaging member 10 and a plate 12 on which this member is supported. The member 10 consists of a substantially U-shaped metal band adapted to be positioned with an edge thereof toward the bottomface of the last and to embrace the upstanding marginal portion of the upper lasted against the lip of the insole around the toe. The band is flexible to adapt it to be pressed inwardly toward the insole lip at the sides of the toe, and is also' resilient, its construction being such that its opposite ends normally occupy positions somewhat nearer together than when it is applied in holding relation to the upper so that by its resiliency it tends to press the upper at the sides of the toe toward the lip of the insole. The intermediate portion of the member 10 is fastened to the plate 12 by a screw 14. At its opposite ends the member 10 is provided with inturned flanges 16 having therein slots 18 through which extend screws 20 that are threaded in the plate 12, the heads of these screws overlapping the flanges 16. The screws 20 thus hold the end portions of the member 10 close to the plate 12 while permitting these portions to be moved toward and from each other. The screws further serve to limit inward and outward movements of the end portions of the member.
The member above referred to as fastened to the insole and last comprises a plate 22 so formed as to overlie the toe-end portion of the insole and substantially to fit the inner face of the lip a. of the insole all around the toe. The plate 22 is provided with a plurality of openings 24 to receive tacks t driven through the insole into the last in such manner as to clamp the plate down upon the shoe bottom. A comparatively large number of such openings are provided, only such relation to each other as to assist by such inclinations in holding the plate firmly down on the insole. The plate 22 has a downwardly projecting marginal portion 26 arranged to engage the insole in the channel at the inner side of the lip and is so formed as to engage and support the lip substantially throughout the height of the latter, the plate being further so constructed that its intermediate portion is upraised somewhat above the bottom face of the insole, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
To render the plate 22, fastened to the last and insole as above described, effective to maintain the upper-holding devicein operative position, there is provided on the plate a screw-threaded projection 28 on which is mounted a nut 30 arranged to overlap the upper face of the plate 12 of the upper-holding device. It will be evident that by turning the nut 30 after the upper-holding device has been applied to the shoe this device maybe clamped in upper-holding position and may even be forced toward the bottom face of the last with greater pressure, and that the nut serves thereafter to transmit force from the plate 22 to the upper-holding device to hold the device pressed firmly against the upper toward the bottom face of the last until such time as it is desired to remove the upper-holding means from the shoe.
It will be understood that the plate 22 will be fastened to the last and insole in the manner described prior to the toe-lasting operation. In addition to maintaining the upper-holding device in operative position the plate has the further important function of supporting the lip of the insole against the pressure applied by the wipers 8 in wiping the upper inwardly against the outer face of the lip. This permits the up-,
standing marginal portion of the upper materials to be pressed very firmly against the lip by the wipers without any danger of distorting the lip,

For moving the plate 68 and the parts supported thereon lengthwise of the lever 64 there is provided a lever 106 (Fig. 2) pivotally mounted on a bracket 108 which is fast on one of the members 66, the lever being connected to the plate 68 in a forked extension of the latter by means of a pin 110 carried by the plate and extending through a slot in the lever.
In the use of the above-described mechanism for applying the upper-holding device to the shoe the device is first mounted on the carrier 82 in the position determined by the pins 84, and the latches 83 are swung into positions to support the device on the carrier, as illustrated in Fig. 6, the ends of these latches being positioned against the inner faces of the end portions of the band 10 which are moved apart by the operator far enough to admit the ends of the latches. It will be understood that at this time the lever 64 occupies a different position from that indicated in the drawings to permit the upper-holding device to be readily mounted as described. Before applying the device to the shoe the operator will have wiped the marginal portion of the toe end of the upper into lasted position against the lip of the insole by means of the wipers 8, as illustrated in Fig. 3, using the lever 50 to advance and close the wipers and using the treadle 54 to move them heightwise of the toe to upwipe the upper around the toe and thereafter to move them downwardly to press the upper forcibly against the feather of the insole. With the wipers in the position indicated in 3 the operator swings the lever 64 downwardly over the shoe, and by reason of the fact that the carrier plate 82 is positioned at that time by the spring ininclined relation to the lever, the edge of the intermediate portion of the upper-holding member 10 is first carried into contact with the upper faces of the wipers. By means of the lever 106, which the operator controls simultaneously with the lever 64, the plate 68 is so positioned that the member 10 first engages the wipers as described a little in front of the gathered marginal portion of the upper materials at the end of the toe. The operator then, by means of the lever 106, moves the upper-holding device along the Wipers while at the same time bearing down on the lever 64 enough to insure that the edge of the member 10 will slide down the beveled upper surface of the wipers near the Wiping edges until the member is pressed against the upstanding margin of the upper projecting The lever enough to position the member 10 close to the wipers at the sides of the toe, the operator swings the latches 88 out of their operative positions and thus releases the ends of the member 10 which by the resiliency of the member spring inwardly against the margin of the upper at the sides of the toe and press it against the lip of the insole. The lever 64 is then further depressed to insure that the edge of the member 10 will be pressed firmly against the wipers adjacent to their edges all around the toe, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the
spring 100 at that time having yielded to such an extent that the stop screw 104 engages the plate 68. While maintaining the downward pressure on the lever 64 the operator backs off the wipers 8 enough to admit the lower edge of the member 10 between the edges of the wipers and the upstanding margin of the upper, the member being pressed downwardly to this position by the lever 64, as illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be evident that before the wipers 8 are backed'oif the member 16 is positioned and held as described in such relation to the margin of the upper as to insure against any loosening of the upper by the retractive movement of the wipers. It will be understood that the stop screw 104 is so adjusted that when the member 10 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 4 it is-pressed positively down by the lever 64 with the lower edge of the member in parallel relation tothe plane of the lower faces of the wipers and in firm engagement with the upper all around the toe. With the parts in these positions the wipers may be advanced and closed by the lever 50 to press the member 10 more firmly inward toward the lip of the insole at the end and the sides of the toe. By the use of a suitable tool the operator then turns the nut 30 into clamping relation to the plate 12 so that the nut presses and holds the member 10 firmly down on the shoe bottom. The lever 64 is then lifted, the pins 84 being withdrawn from the holes 86 in the plate 12. Thereafter the wipers are retracted and the shoe with the upper-holding means thereon is removed from the machine. It will be understood that this means will be left on the shoe until the box-toestifiening material has hardened sufiiciently to maintain the toe-end portion of the upper in lasted position without extraneous holding means. Thereafter the nut 30 will be loosened, the upperholding device removed and the plate 22 also detached from the shoe by prying it upwardly from the shoe bottom.
While the invention is thus herein illustrated as applied to the manufacture of shoes of a type in which the upper is lasted against a lip on an insole, it will be understood that in various novel aspects it is likewise applicable to the manufacture of shoes of other kinds, for example those in which the margin of the upper is lasted substantially flat upon the outer face of the insole andin which the upper is secured in lasted position by cement; and further that it is not limited to the lasting of the toe ends of shoes. It will also be understood that various novel features disdevice for applying holding pressure to the mara ginal portion of the upper toward the bottom face of the last, and means movable relatively to said member after its attachment to the last to transmit force from the member to said device in a direction heightwise of the last.

Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a member formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and constructed for attachment to the insole and last in engagement with the lip, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, and means to render said member effective to maintain said device in upper-holding position.

Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a member formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and constructed for attachment to the insole and last in en gagement with the lip, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, and means movably mounted on said member for pressing said upperengaging device on the upper.

Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a member formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and constructed for attachment to the insole and last in engagement with the lip, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, and a device mounted for turning movement after the attachment of said member to the insole and last to render the member effective to press the upper-engaging device on the upper toward the bottom face of the last.

Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a plate formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and adapted to be fastened to the insole and last by fastenings penetrating the shoe bottom to support the lip in the lasting operation, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe'at the outer side of the lip, and means for connecting said device to the plate to maintain the device in upper-ho1ding position.
48. Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a plate formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and adapted to be fastened to the insole and last to support the lip in the lasting operation, said plate having a screw-threaded portion, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, and a screwthreaded member arranged to cooperate with said screw-threaded portion of the plate to maintain the device in upper-holding position.
49. Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a plate formed substantially to flt the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and adapted to be fastened to the insole and last to support the lip in the lasting operation, a device constructed for holding engagement with the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, and a member movably mounted on said plate for pressing said device on the upper toward the bottom face of the last.
50. Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a plate formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of the insole around the toe and adapted to be fastened to the insole and last to support the lip in the lasting operation, said plate having a screw-threaded projection thereon, a flexible member curved in approximate conformity to the curvature of the toe end of the shoe bottom for engaging the upper around the toe at the outer side of the lip, a plate on which said flexible member is mounted, and a nut threaded on said projection and arranged to bear on said lastnamed plate to press said flexible member upon the upper and maintain it in upper-holding position. 1

Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a device formed to embrace the upstanding margin of the upper positioned against the lip of the insole around the toe, said device having the portions thereof at the sides of the toeunder spring control tending to forcev them inwardly toward the lip of the insole when the device is applied to a shoe.
52. Means for holding the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper in lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, comprising a flexible resilient member curved to embrace the upstanding margin of the upper around the toe and so constructed as to act by its resiliency to press the margin of the upper inwardly against the lip of the, insole at the sides of the toe.
53. Means for holding the marginal portion of an end of an upper in lastedposition, comprising a flexible resilient member curved toextend around the end of the shoe bottom for holding engagement with the lasted margin of the upper, the opposite end portions of said member being normally maintained by its resiliency nearer together than when it is in upper-holding position.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating onthe shoe, comprising a device portable withthe shoe and last over the shoe bottom and having positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces of a shoe machine to determine the position of the shoe and last with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily movements and lateral swinging movements.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last over the shoe bottom and having positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces of a shoe machine to determine the position of the shoe and last with respect to movements in all directions.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, com prising a device constructed for attachment to the shoe and last by tacks penetrating the shoe bottom and having positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces of a shoe machine to position the shoe and last in the machine with respect to movements in different directions.

Means. for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, comprising a device constructed for attachment to the shoe and last by .fastenings driven into the shoe bottom and having positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding positioning surfaces of a shoe machine to determine the position of the shoeland last with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily movements and lateral swinging movements. Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, comprising a plate adapted to be positioned upon the bottom face of an insole on the last and having openingstherein to receive fastenings driven through the insole intoithe last to hold the plate in clamping relation. to the insole, said plate having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces of a shoe machine to position the shoe and last in the machine. g

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last .upon the toe end of an insole on the last and constructed for attachment to the last by tacks, said device having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on the machine to determine the position of the shoe and last with respect to movements in all directions.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last in a position determined by engagement with the lip of an insole on the last, said device being constructed to cooperate with a part of a shoe machine to determine the position of the shoe and last in the machine. 7 a V 62. Means forpositioning a shoe and last relatively to means for operating on the shoe, comprising a device adapted to be positioned upon the bottom face of an insole on the last in a location determined by engagement with the lip of the insole and having openings therein to receive fastenings driven through the insole into thelast to fasten it in that location, said device being constructed to cooperate with a part of a shoe machine to determine the position of the shoe and last in the machine.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to'toe embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last in a position determined by engagement the toe-end portion of the lip of an insole on the last, said device having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on the machine to position the shoe and last relatively tothe wipers.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device formed for engagement with the inner face of the lip of an insole onthe last at the end and the sides of the toe to determine its position on the insole and constructed for attachment to the last in that position by fastening means penetrating the insole,said device hav'ng thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on the ma.- chine to determine the position of the shoe and last relatively to the wipers.
66. Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively, totoe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last and formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of an insole on the last around the toe end of the insole to determine the position of said device on the insole, said device having thereon positioning surfaces formed tocooperate with corresponding surfaces on the machine to determine the position of the shoe and last relatively to the wipers with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily movements and lateral swinging movements.

Means for positioning a shoe and last rela'-' tively to toe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a plate formed substantially [to fit the inner face of the lip of an insole on the'last its around the toe end of the insole and having there- 7 in openings to receive fastenings driven through the insole into the last to fasten it in a position determined by the lip, said plate having thereon positioning surfaces formedvto cooperate with with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily 9 movements and lateral swinging movements.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means in a shoe machine for operating on the shoe, comprising a device adapted to be positioned onthe bottom face of an insole on the last and constructed for attachment to the last by tacks penetrating the insole, said device having positioning surfaces thereon, and a device on the machine provided with positioning surfaces for engaging said first-named surfaces, the different positioning surfaces being so formed and arranged as to determine the position of the shoe and last with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily movements and lateral swinging movements.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to means in a shoe machine for operating on the shoe, comprising a device portable with the shoe and last in a position determined by engagement with the lip of an insole on the last, and a device on the machine constructed and arranged to cooperate with said first-named device to determine the position of the shoe and last relatively to the operating means.

Means for positioning a shoe and last rela tively to means in a shoe machine for operating on the shoe, comprising a device constructed for attachment to the shoe and last in a position determined by engagement with the lip of an in sole on the last, said device having positioning surfaces thereon, and a device on the machine provided with positioning surfaces to engage said first-named surfaces, the different positioning surfaces being so formed and arranged as to determine the position of the shoe and last with respect to lengthwise and lateral bodily movements and lateral swinging movements.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of an insole on the last around the toe end of the insole to determine the position of the device on the insole and, con structed for attachment to the shoe and last in the position thus determined, said devicehaving positioning surfaces thereon, and a device on the machine having positioning surfaces arranged to engage said first-named surfaces to determine the position of the shoe and last relatively to the wipers.

Means for positioning a shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, comprising a device formed substantially tofit the inner face of the lip of an insole on the last around the toe end of an insole to determine the position of the device on the insole and constructed for attachment to the shoe and last in the position thus determined, said device having positioning surfaces thereon, and a device on the machine having positioning surfaces arranged to engage said first-named surfaces, the different positioning surfaces being formed and arranged to determine the position of the shoe and last with. respect to movements in all di- 1 rections.

Means for use in lasting the toes of shoes, comprising a device constructed for attachment to a shoe and last over the toe end of an insole on the last and having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on a lasting machine to position the shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers, another device portable with the shoe and last for holding the marginal portion of the upper around the toe in lasted relation to the insole, and means for rendering said first-named device effective to maintain the upper-holding device in pressure-applying relation to the upper.

Means for use in lasting the toes of shoes, comprising a device constructed for attachment to a shoe and last over the toe end of an insole on the last and having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on a lasting machine to position the shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers, an-

Means for use in lasting the toes of shoes, comprising a device constructed for attachment to a shoe and last in a position determined by engagement with the toe end of the lip of an insole on the last and having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on a. lasting machine to position the shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers, another device portable with the shoe and last for holding the marginal portion of the upper around the toe in lasted relation to the lip of the insole, and means for rendering said first-named device effective to maintain said upper-holding device in operative position,

Means for use in lasting the toes of shoes, comprising a device formed substantially to fit the inner face of the lip of an insole on a last around the toe end of the insole to determine the position of the device on the insole and to support the lip against pressure in the lasting operation, said device being constructed forattachment to' the shoe and last in .the position thus determined and having thereon positioning surfaces formed to cooperate with corresponding surfaces on a lasting machine to position the shoe and last relatively to toe-embracing wipers, another device portable with the shoe and last for holding the marginal portion'of the upper around the toe in lasted relation to the lip of the insole, and a member mounted for turning movement and arranged to cooperate with said first-named device to press said upper-holding device upon the upper and to maintain it in operative position.
80. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means movable to work the marginal portion of an end of an upper into lasted position over the bottom of a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support a device for temporarily holding the marginal portion of the upper in lasted position around the end of the shoe bottom, said carrier being movable heightwise of the last relatively to said lasting means-to press said device upon a portion of the upper previously uncovered by-retractive movement of the lasting means toward the edge of the shoe bottom.
81. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means for working the marginal portion of an end of an upper into lasted position over the bottom of a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support a device for temporarily holding the marginal portion of the upper in lasted position around the end of the shoe bottom, said carrier being movable heightwise of the last relatively to said lasting means to press said device on the upper and movable also lengthwise of the last in applying the device to the upper. 82. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting meansfor working the marginal portion of an end of an upper into lasted position over the bottom of a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support a device for temporarily holding the marginal portion of the upper in lasted position around the end of theshoe bottom, and a lever supporting said carrier and movable to press said device against the upper upon the shoe bottom, the carrier being supported on the lever for movement lengthwise of the shoe in applying the device to the shoe.
83. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means for working the marginal portion of an end of an upper into lasted position over the bottom of a last, of mechanism constructed to apply to the upper around the end of the shoe bottom after the upper has been worked into lasted position an upper-holding device having upper-engaging portions resiliently ,movable to,
ward each other laterally of the shoe, said mechanism including means for temporarily holding said upper-engaging portions comparatively wide apart.

In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means for working the marginal portion of an end of an upper into lasted position over the bottom of a last, of a .carrier constructed to receive and support an upper-holding device comprising a flexible resilient member curved to extend around the end of the shoe bottom, said carrier being movable to press said member upon the marginal portion of the upper after the upper has been worked into lasted position and being provided with mechanism for engaging the opposite ends of said member to hold them temporarily in positions farther apart than they normally assume by the resiliency of the member.
85. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means movable to work the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of mechanism movable heightwise of the last relatively to said lasting means to apply around the upstanding marginal portion of the upper a device ior temporarily holding the toe end of the upper in lasted position and to press said device against a portion of the upper previously uncovered by retractive movement of the lasting means toward the edge of the shoe bottom.
86. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means for working the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of mechanism for applying around the marginal portion of the upper a device for temporarily holding the toe end of the upper in lasted position, said mechanism comprising means for moving said device heightwise of the last relatively to the lasting means to press it upon the upper and for also moving it lengthwise of the last to force it against the upstanding margin of the upper at the end of the toe.
87. In a lasting machine, the combination with lasting means for working the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of mechanism for applying around the toe a device for holding the marginal portion of the upper in lasted position, said mechanism comprising a member movable by the operator to force said device against the upper toward the bottom face of the last and another member movable by the operator to force the device lengthwise of the shoe against the upstanding margin of the upper at the end of the toe.

In a lasting machine, thecombination with lasting means for working'the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support a device for holding the marginal portion of the upper around they toe in lasted position, a support for said carrier movable heightwise of the shoe to press the device upon the upper, and means carried by said support for moving the carrier lengthwise of the shoe to force the device against the upstanding margin of the upper at the end of the toe.
89. In a lasting machine, the combination with toe-embracing wipers for wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted upper in lasted position, said mechanism being movable to apply the device in holding relation to the upstanding margin of the upper projecting beyond the wipers while the wipers are holding the upper pressed against the lip of the insole and thereafter to force the device toward the feather of the insole upon retractive movement of the wipers.

In a lasting machine, the combination with toe-embracing wipers for Wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of mechanism for applying around the toe a de vice for holding the marginal portion of the upper in lasted position, said mechanism being movable to carry the device first into contact with the outer faces of the wipers while the wipers are holding the upper pressed against the lip of the insole, then to apply it in holding relation to the upstanding margin of the upper projecting beyond the wipers, and thereafter to force it toward the feather of the insole upon retractive movement of the wipers.

In a lasting machine, the combination with toe-embracing wipers for wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper 'into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support a device for holding the marginal portion of the upper around the toe in lasted position, a support for said carrier movable to apply said device first in contact with the outer faces of the wipers while the wipers are holding the upper pressed against the lip of the insole, and means for moving the carrier along its support to apply the device against the upstanding margin of the upper and thus to hold the upper while the wipers are retracted to-permit the device to beforced against the upper on the feather of the insole.

In a lasting machine, the combination with toe-embracing wipers for wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last; of mechanism-for applying to the. shoe. a member curved to embrace and hold the upstanding margin of the upper around the toe, said mechanism being constructed to apply said member first to the margin of the upper at theend of the .toe with the member inclined to the shoe bottom and thereafter to seat the member on the upper all around the toe in substantially parallel relation to the shoe bottom. i l

In a lasting machine, the combination With toe-embracing wipers for wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of a carrier constructed to receive and support an upper-holding device comprising a member curved to embrace and hold the upstanding margin of the upper around the toe, and mechanism for moving said carrier heightwise and lengthwise of the shoe to apply said member tothe up per, said mechanism including spring-controlled means arranged .to tip the carrier to such a position as to cause the member to be applied first to the margin of the upper at the end of thetoe and yieldable thereafter to permit the member toe-embracing wipers for wiping the marginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of a carrier for applying to theshoe a device for embracing and holding the upstanding margin of the upper around thetoe, a support for said carrier movable heightwise of the shoe toward the shoe bottom, the carrier being mounted on its support for limited tipping movement about an axis extending laterally of the shoe, and spring meansv arranged to maintain the carrier normally at one. limit-of its tipping movement and to yield in applying said device to the shoe.

In a lasting machine, the combination with toe-embracing wipers for wiping the niarginal portion of the toe end of an upper into lasted position against the lip of an insole on a last, of a carrier for applying to the shoe a device for embracing and holding the upstanding mar gin of the upper around the toe, a support for said carrier movable heightwise of the shoe to- Ward the shoe bottom,.the carrier being mounted on its upport for limited tipping movement about an axis extending laterally of the shoe, a spring arranged to control the tipping-of the carrier and to position it in inclined relation to the shoe bottom in first applying said device to the shoe, said spring being yieldable as the carrier support is moved toward the shoe bottom, and means arranged to act positively in place of the spring to seat the device. firmly on the shoe bottom.
