SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,052, dated October 5, 1880, Application filed September 9, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEISS, a resi dent of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seals for Cars and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correctdescription ofthe same,reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.

This invention provides a means for effectually sealing the doors of freight-cars, or for se curing packages of various kinds.

Heretofore a seal for freightcars has been I 5 formed of a round wire made of ductile material, one end of which was passed through an opening in a flattened portion of the wire and afterward flattened and marked by a tool. This construction of a seal is a failure in the commercial sense, as it is difficult to flatten and mark distinctly the wire upon the lock by means of a tool; and, again, the marked or stamped portion of the wire is easily disconnected by tampers from the wire and refiat- 2 5 tened and re-marked.

The object of my invention is to overcome these serious difiiculties and protect the freightcars from tampering without disclosing the same.

0 The nature of the improvement will be read ily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon- I Figure 1 representsthe invention before being applied, and Fig. 2 the manner in which 3 5 it appears after being secured in position.

I have shown in the annexed drawings, form- 1ng a portion of this specification, a narrow strip of tin or other inateriahone end of which is preferably folded back, so as to increase the strength at said point, and in this end a nar- 4o row slot, a, is made to receive a tongue, I), that is constructed on the opposite end of the strip.

The seal is effected by inserting the tongue I) in the slot atand by crimping the end thereof, by folding the crimped end back over the tongue, and by crimping the folded portion of the tongue, as shown at c.

The crimping is accomplished by means of a pair of pinchers, the ends of which are provided with dies, so as to produce any desired nnpression.

From the above description it will be seen that the crimping or pressing of the tongue causes certain portions thereof to be raised, thereby preventing its withdrawal. 5 5

It will also be seen that the tongue b is of such a length that when once destroyed at the fold the seal cannot be used again; also, the crimping, which extends inwardly beyond the fold, will prevent the free withdrawal of the ton gne through the slot c.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A seal for cars and other purposes, the same consisting of a narrow strip of tin or other suitable material having a slot constructed in one end thereof for the reception of a tongue on the opposite end of said strip, and which end is prevented from withdrawal by crimping the same, as described.
