Patented Sept. 21, 1943 Wiliam This invention relates to containers, such as compacts, vanity or cigarette cases and has for its general object and purpose to simplify and reduce the cost of manufacture of such articles by the provision of means for securely retaining the cover of the case in closed position without employing separate latching or locking elements attached to the case body or cover.

It is a more particular object of the invention to provide a case or container in which a sheet metal case body has an upstanding resiliently yieldable marginal wall and the hinged cover has a relativelynarrow and rigid marginal rim or rplicaticnmmi, 1941. seriaiivn 39e-eat M 10mm. (o1. zao--tmM- l flange provided with an outwardly projecting lip f adapted to coact with said body wall and locally distort the same from normal position whereby said wall is caused to frictionally coact with said lip and retain the cover in closed position.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved container, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts as will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claim.

In the drawing wherein I have shown one ysirnple and practical embodiment of the invention and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:

For purposes of illustration, I have selected a case or container of circular form, though it will be evident that the present invention is applicable as well to such containers of rectangular or other shapes or forms. The container body, generally indicated at 5, is formed of pressed or stamped sheet metal and includes the bottom wall 5, formed at its outer edge with acontinuous inwardly opening bead 'I and the upstanding marginal wall 8. This marginal wall is of such depth that it is capable of local resilient distortion from its normal position at substantially right angles to the plane of the bottom wall 6,

The lid or cover for the case body, generally indicated at 9, also is formed from stamped or pressed sheet metal and is hingedly connected to the marginal wail 8 of the case body at one side of the latter in any well-known manner; as indicated at Ii).

The cover section of the container includes the tcp wall II also formed at its outer edge with a continuous inwardly opening bead I2 and a relatively narrow rim or flange I3 extending inwardly therefrom. This flange is comparativelyvrigid and ata point diametrically opposite to the hinge I is formed with the outwardly pressed concave-convex lip Iii. It will he understood that the cover iiange I 3 is of such dimensions relative to the body wall 8 that when said cover is in closed position, the`cover ila-nge I3 has snug fitting contact against the inner face of said body wall.

' As indicated in' Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, when the container is used as a compact or a vanity'case, the body section 5 of the container which receives the cosmetic materials and powder puff or the like, is provided with a liner of paper or other suitable material, indicated at I5, which covers the upper surface of the `bottom wall 6 and has its outer edge engaged in the hollow vbead 'I'. Similarly, a mirror I6 may be applied to the inner surface of the cover wall II with its outer edge portion engaged in the hollow bead I2 of said cover. i

In the use of the device,'it will be understood that when the cover member I) is moved from the open position shown in Fig. l to the closed position of Fig. 2, the outwardly projecting rigid lip I4 on the cover llange I3 will rst contact the edge of the upstanding body wall 8 and, upon the application of pressure, at this vpoint said body wall will be sprung outwardly or distorted from its normal position as clearly shown in Fig. `3 of the drawing. Thus the lower edge of the lip I4 moves downwardly against the inner face o-f the body wall against increasing frictional resistance as said wall is outwardly sprung from its normal position. Therefore, when the cover member is fully closed, it will be evident that the inward bearing frictional pressure of the body wall 8 against the outer surface of the lip I4, as indicated at ;I'|, will be sufficiently great to to securely hold or retain the cover in closed position against accidental outward opening movement relative to the container body and, in order to open said cover member, it is necessary to apply considerable manual lifting force against the edge bead I2 of the cover member.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a case or container with cover holding or latching means havdisclosure, my invention is susceptible to incorporation in other structural forms. Therefore, it is to be understood that the privilege is reserved of resorting to all such legitimate changes ror modications in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several cooperating parts as may fairly be considered as within -the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
