VANITY-sox.y i
Application filed March 22, 1916. Serial No. 85,968.
To all whom 'it may eolico/m.'
Be it known that I. WILLIAM G. Ki-ixnxm., a citizen of the United States, residing at Newarlein the4 county of Essex and, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in vanity boxes, the primary object of my invention being the provision of a combined rouge box and pad in which the powdered rouge may be compressed into suitable tablet form directly upon the bottom of the box and in which the box is so shaped as to lock the tablet ot' rouge thus formed in place without the use of adhesives or other fastening means.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a novel Vform ot hinged cover for the box of such a character that the box and ycover may be vstamped out by suitable dies and assembled without the use of solder, iiveting or other fastening means of like nature.
A further object of my invention is to so construct, either the box or the cover, as rto adapt. one or the other of them to hold a mirror. Another obJect which I have in view is to.
provide the rouge holding box which does away with the employment of the ordinary rouge holding pad which, as a rule, carries the rouge and is mounted in a box and which therefore, more compact and more readily carried in a purse.
With these and other objects inl view. my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically pointed ont in the claims which are attached to and form a part of this application.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a4 perspective view of my van` ity box in open position, the puff being removed from t-lie box;
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional View, showing the construction of the box and its hinge, the putt' being also removed in this View to more clearly show certain details;
, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 8 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction ot' the arrows and showing the manner of anchoring a mirror against the inner yface of box;
Fig. et is an elevation, partially in vertical section, of a modified form of box structure the outer reference characters.
My improved vanity box, asbest `shown in Figs. 1 and Q ofthe drawings, includes a cylindrical body portion 10 Haring outwardly at lower end, as shown at 11, and closed by an integrally formed bottom 12. This box is closed by a cover including a top proper 13 having a downwardly depending annular flange 1J. adapted to engage about the uppei. edge of the Acylindrical wall 10 of the box` as clearly shown. This coverniay be entirely removable from the box, but is preferably hingedly connected thereto by means of a tongue 15 which extends from the rear portion of the Harige 14 at its lower edge and which engages4 about a' pintle bar 16 formed by bendingloutwardly a portion Specification of Letters Patent. n Patented Jung 12 1917,
solder, rivets or other fastening means of like nature.
Asa rule, the peripheral flange 1,4, -intermediate its height. is formed with an instiuck annular bead 1S which forms a stop shoulder for limiting the downward movement of the cover when the latter is closed and also as a support for a split resilient locking ring 19 by means of which a mirror 20 may be secured against the inner face of the top 18 of the cover. AS shown in Fig. Q, the mirror is slightly less in diameter than the diametric distance between opposite sides of the bead or shoulder 1S in oi'der that it may be positioned against the top 13 and the locking ring is of such size that when it engages beneath the bead it will project slightly over the edge of the mirror and se cure it in place. One end of the locking ring is ontleent, as shown'at 21. to facilitate its implication or removal and the portion of the locking ring adjacent. said ontbent end bears against the other end of the ring to more firmly anchor it in place by holding it in expanded position.
The rouge, as indicated at 22, is pressed against the inner face of the bottom 12 of the box and forced into the enlarged lower end of the box formed by flaring the lower portion of the wall 10 in such a manner that the entire cake or tablet of rouge is firmly anchored in the bottom of the box without the employment of adhesives' or other securing means. Preferably, the cake or tablet of rouge thusI provided is formed with aconvex upper face in order that it may be more accessible` 1nd a putt' Q3 is provided of suitable size to"tit snugly within the box between the rouge and mirror 20.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, I have illustrated a vanity box which is identical in construction with that shown in Figs. l. and 2, with the exception that instead of locking a mirror against the inner face ofthe cover of the box, the bottom 1'2 of the box is somewhat thickened and has its outer face recessed to receive the mirror 20 which is sedrawings, I have provided an ornamental.
form of rouge box which firmly holds the rouge in place in such .a manner that it isI readily accessible although in such a manner that it will not break in transit. The entire box, with its rouge cake and puff, is very compact and may loe readily carried in a purse.
Although I have described the box as being formed of metal, it will, of course, be understood that it may be made of glass, pressed paper, Celluloid, hard rubber or any other suitable material, it desired.l I therefore reserve the right to make any changes, within the scope of the'appended claims, without. in the slightest degree departing from the spirit of my invention'.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A vanity box including a box proper, a cover having an encircling flange hinged to the box in such a manner that the flange eucircles the upper edge of the box when the cover closed, the flange of said cover being formed with an instruck annular bead intermediate its height forming a stop to vlimit the closing ot the cover, a removable elementl located against. the inner tace of the cover, and a split resilient locking ring engaging between the peripheral edge of the element aud the bead to lock the element in place.
vanity box including a body having a closed bottom formed with a recess in its outer l'ace having an undercut shoulder, a removable element sealed iu the recess, and a spring locking ring engaging the element and beneath the shoulder to lock the` element in place.
A vanity box including a box body having a bottoni and a peripheral wall, the lower portion ot the peripheral wall being upwardly and inwardly inclined and the remaining-greater portion of the wall being vertical whereby rouge positioned in the box and pressed against the bottom will have a portion ot` it forced beneath the upwardly and inwardly inclined portion of the peripheral wall of the box to anchor thecake formed by the pressure exerted vin the box and to provide a puit' receiving space above the cake, and a cover for the box body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. WILLIAM G. KENDALIJ. [L s]
