CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVM. L. EVERIT, ot' New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Car-Couplings, and l do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in device for coupling cars, the object being the construction of the coupling so that it shall automatically engage the link forced into it from another car and avoid the necessity of entering between the cars to couple or uncouple; and the invention consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
Arepresents the head; A,the body, of usual form, having an opening or mouth, B. In rear of the mouth is a chamber, C. In this chamber, above the mouth, on a pivot, a, the bolt D is hinged, so that its own gravity supports it in substantially a vertical position, and in front of the mouth B, and sothat when a link is entered, as in Fig. 2-E representing the link-its end will strike the bolt D and turn it to the rear until the link has passed so far in, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 2, that the bolt D can fall forward within the link; then, unless prevented, the bolt will be turned forward by drawing upon the link until the link would escape from the bolt, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 2.
Below the mouth B, and forward of the bolt, a transverse lever, F, is arranged, hinged at one side on a pivot, b, and extending through to the opposite side, where it is hinged by a pivot, d, to the lower end of a lever, G. The leverGis engaged at the upper end by a latch, H, hinged to a pivot, c, so as to engage a notch, f, in the lever Cr, when said lever is turned upright, as seen in Fig. 3. In this condition the lever F lies below the bolt D, and so that the bolt will swing free of it to permit the link to be drawn out.

The lower end, I, of the lever G is made circular in form, and so as to rest in a recess, L, in the side ofthe body. The pivot d is eccentric to the lower end of' the lever G. Hence, when the lever G is dropped, as in broken lines, Fig. 3, it turns in its seat L and raises that end ot' the lever F, as also seen in broken lines,Fig. 3, so as tobring the lever Fin front of the bolt D, as seen in broken lines, Figs. 2 and 3. y
The upper end of the bolt D is made of cam shape, as atf, so that when the link Eis forced inward and turns the bolt, as in broken lines, Fig. 2, the camshaped end of the bolt strikes the latch H and lifts it, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 3. In thus rising the back of the latch, as its nose passes from the notch f, strikes an incline, h', above and forces the lever G away, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 3, until it has considerably passed its center of gravity 5 then it falls of its own weight and lifts the lever F, as before described, into its position in front ot' the bolt, and thus holds the bolt within the link and prevents the link from being drawn out.
When it is desired to disengage the link the lever G is turned up, the latch H automatically engaging with it, as seen in Fig. 3, which causes the lever F to drop and release the bolt, as before described.
To hold the link in a level position, so that it may be readily entered into the coupling of another car, a weight, M, hangs within the recess C and above the link, hung` at the rear upon a pivot, m, This weight, resting upon the inner end of the link, is sufficient to support it in a leve-l or horizontal position, but yet will allow the link the vertical play necessary for self-adjustment.
The body is made open at the top for the convenience of access to the internal mechanism, and is provided with a hinged cover, N, by opening which the internal mechanism may be reached.
To guard against the possibility of the bolt D being so caught outside the lever F that it would not return by the entering link-that is to say, if the lever F should be raised while the bolt is in its forward position, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2, it would prevent the re- IOO turn of the bolta slot, r, is formed in the bolt at the pivot, which will allow vertical play, so that if it be in the condition last described thc link coming againstit will force it upward and permit it to pass over and drop down in rear of the lever F.
I claiml. In acar-conpling, the combination ofthe recessed body provided with a mouth, B, thc hinged bolt D, with the lever F, the lever G, hinged to said lever F, and constructed of cam shape around the pivot-point, and a corresponding seat whereby the turning` of the le ver G raises or lowers said lever F, substantially as described.

In a car-coupling, the combination ofthe recessed body provided with a mouth, B, the hinged bolt D, With the lever F, the lever G, hinged to said lever F, and constructed of cam shape around the pivot-point, and a corresponding seat whereby the turning of the lever Gr raises or lowers said lever F, and a latch, H, to engage the said lever G, with cam on the bolt to operate said latch, substantially. as described.
3. In a ear-coupling, the combination of the recessed body provided with a month, B, the hinged bolt D, with the lever F, the lever G, hinged to said lever F, and constructed of cam shape around the pivot-point, and a corresponding seat whereby the turning of the lever Gr raises or lowers said lever F, with the hinged weight M, substantially as described.
4. In a ear-conplin g, the combination of the recessed body provided with a mouth, B, `the hinged bolt D, with the lever F, the lever G, hinged .to said lever F, and constructed of cam shape around the pivot-point, and a corresponding seat whereby the turning of the lever G raises or lowers said lever F, and with 4o the cover N, substantially as described.
