IMPROVEM ENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,849, dated July 8, 1862.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN D. TURNER, of the city, county, and State of lNew York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being Vhad to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification.
The character of said drawings is clearly indicated by the titles which are appended to each figure of the same.
Each bumper-head, A or A', of myiinproved car-coupling has a link, I or I', permanently secured within its flaring mouth by means of a pin, K or K', the said links projecting outward beyond the mouths of the respective bumper-heads about the `same distance that the ordinary coupling -links do from the bumper-heads ofthe usual description of carcouplings.
A catch, B or B', of the shape representedin Figure 5. of the drawings, is hinged within and at the frontend of a longitudinal slot formed in the upper side ofthe mouth of each bumperhead, and a notch or shoulder formed in the lower side of the mouth of each bumper-head receives the lower end of each of the hinged catches when they are allowed to fall into the fastening position represented in Fig. 5. The said hinged catches are of such a shape that they will swing freely inward and upward when they are outwardly struck by the'ends of the links `I l', and as soon as the ends of said links have passed a sufiicient distance within the mouths of the bumper-heads thesaid abling them to be conveniently drawn upward.
A flange, H or H', projects from the sides and inner edge of the head of each hinged catch B or B a sufficient distance to cover the mouths of the slots in which the said catches play, for the purpose of excluding snow or ice from the said slots when the catches are hanging in the fastening positions shown in Fig. 5.
Each hinged catch Bor B' has a shoulder, D or D', formed in such a position on one side of the head of the same as 'to prevent the catch from being drawn upward to a positionhigher than that represented in Fig.` 2, or from being elevated to such aposition that the catches will not, simply by force of gravity, reset themselves in the position shown in Fig. 5 the moment that they are relieved from all lifting force.
The link which projects from the mouth -of each bumper-head ot' my improved car-coupling can be readily coupled with any other bumpei-head by the use ofthe ordinary coupling-pin.
Having thus fully described my improved car-coupling, whatI claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1'S-,-
l. The use ofthe permanent pins K K', the links I I', and the hinged catches B B', when arranged with the bumper-heads A A of said coupling in such almauner that the saidparts are enabled to jointly operato with each other, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The permanent attachment of a link to each bumper-head of my improved car-coup ling when a vibrating catch is jointed to each ofthe said bumper-heads, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth. Y
3. When a vibrating catch, B, and alink, I, are permanently connected with each bumperhead of my improved car-coupling, closing the mouth of the catch-receiving slot in the upper side of the mouth of the said bumper-head by means of the flanged projection from the head of the said vibrating catch, substantially as represented in the accompanying drawings.
4. Giving such a shape to the head portion of each hinged catch B or B' as will prevent it from being elevated to a higher position than that represented in the accompanying drawings, but this only when the vibrating catches B B and the links I I' are combined with the bumper-heads A A' in the manner represented in the drawings.
