Description

sept v, 1945s. B. APP 2,329,054Y DEPILATORY P Patented Sept. 7, 1943 UNITED STATES v"will"1551iT OFFIcJr. g
. This invention relates generally to devices for removing. superfluous hair andparticularly to a depilatory'pad in which an abrasive is employed for removing the superuoushair.
'Ihe use of sheeted abrasive materials, such as a iine gradeof silicon carbide abrasive paper, has
been extensively used for the removal of superfluous hair from the human body.; Such Labrasive pads have been provided in a variety of forms 'calculated to facilitate their manipulation. For
example, the sheets of abrasive paper have been formed as a mitten, glove or a` simple pad with a holding strip. But none of these arrangements is entirely satisfactory. An object of the present invention'is to provide y an abrasive pad for the removal gofsuperuous hair in a form which will beconveniently manipulative and'cheap to manufacture.
Other objects will become apparent to those skilled in the art when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a depilatory pad constructed in accordance with the present invention shown in relation to a convenient holding block;
Figure 2 is a diametrical sectional view of the depilatory pad shown in Figure' 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a gripping and backing member utilized in accordance with the present invention as an alternative to the form shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a plan view of a blank from which the gripping and backing member shown in Figure 3 may be made; and
Figure 5 is a diametrical sectional view of an embodiment of the present invention utilizing the gripping and backing member shown in Figure 3.
In accordance with the present invention, a sheet of abrasive material of the grade customarily used for removing superfluous hair is provided with a skirt of non-abrasive material which extends in a generally axial direction with reference to the plane of the sheet of abrasive material, so that the assembly constitutes a cup shaped article into the interior of which a suitable rigid holder may be inserted. Such a holder may take the form of a block of predetermined configuration: a nail brush, cake of soap, milk bottle, or any rigid article. When such a rigid holder is inserted within the cup shaped depilatory pad of the present invention, the skirted portion may be gripped against the rigid holder and held in suciently rm position to be easily portions of the body in amanner'well known to those skilled in the art.` f y While in the embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawing the depilatory pad of the present :inventionis provided with a skirt of a generally frustro-conical shape, it is not to be uunderstood that the invention is limited to cupvshaped, members, of this configuration, vas it ris obvious thatfthe sides -of the cup shaped mem- ,bermay extend atr right angles `to the. abrasive vfacethereef, in which event the articley Winl be Furthermore,
generally( cylindrically shaped. the circular form is not essentiahasmitwill be understood `that if a rigidholderpf rectangular 'shape is preferred it will be advantageous to lconlstruct the cup shaped abrasive,.padin.a f orm llwhich, willV generally accord with that of the holder to be used. Furthermore, if desired, a rigid holder of a fanciful shape may be provided and consequently the cup shaped member of the present invention should, in such cases, conform as nearly as may be to the contour of the fanciful holder.
Referring now to the drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, the cup shaped depilatory pad of the present invention comprises a sheet of abrasive material l which may be any of the Well known sheeted abrasives recognized to be usable for the purpose of depilation. In the embodiment shown the' abrasive sheet I is circular in contour and of a convenient size, as for example two inches in diameter. The back of the abrasive sheet i is adhesively secured 'to a gripping and manipulating backing member means of a rigid holder 4 which, in the embodithe backing sheet for the abrasive substanceisfsufficiently strong to sustain it during operation.-
Furthermore, a second sheet of abrasive 'matel rial may be secured to the interior bottom of the cup shaped member 2 with itsK abrasive sur- A, Y, l s
what is claimed is:
face extending in the opposite direction from'"` that of the sheet l, in Which case when. the" sheet I becomes Worn .the skirt 2 may be invaginatedto expose the other sheet of abrasive materialV on the exterior for'use. 'j' s In the embodiment shown' in VFigure 3 the manipulating member 6 is formed without nuting 'from a blank such as that shown in= Figure 4, which may have its extremities? and-8 connected as shown at 9 to producea frustroQ-eo'nical cup shaped member having a discontinuous botltom. The bottom may be closed'liy' a" sheet of abrasive material l0 as shown inFig-ure 5,either with or without an auxiliary backing piece within ythe cup, or in lieu thereof a second sheet' of Habrasivefmaterial I [arranged sel that its Aabrasive surface faces opposite to thatl of sheet I8'.4
' While for economy of ymanufacture it is desirable vto formA the cup shaped member `2"ef heavypaper, thosesskili'ed inthe vart will readily realize that such a member may be vformedo'f fabric or other strong, flexible materials, it being understood that it is contemplated that the entire device be discarded when the abrasive surfaces become so worn that they are no longer effective to remove superfluous hair.
From the foregoing description those skilled in the art will understand the operation and advantages of the invention, and While two complete embodiments have been herein disclosed it 'is not torbe understoodthatth `invention is limited to' the details thereof *butvthat such embodiments are merely illustrative of the princ-iples of the present invention, and that such modifications and Variations thereof as do not depart from the scope of the appended claims are contemplated.
The invention having thus been described,
, l. A depilatory pad comprising, a sheet of vabrasive material, and a skirt of non-abrasive material extending in a generally axial direction "from said, sheet of abrasive Amaterial;
