VENT-PLUG FOR BARRELS, 84C.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,797, dated September 28, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT ZOLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at NewYork, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vent- Plugs for Barrels, Casks, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to vent-plugs for casks and barrels; and it consists in a vent-plu g comprising a metal casting formed with a hollow stem, a handle at right angles to the stem made hollow a portion of its length an d formed wlth a solid end adapted to be grasped by the operator, a socket formed intermediate the solid end of the handle, and the stem and an ei'llarged head at the upper end of the stem, the said socket being provided with a ventcap for the valve, all as hereinafter more fully described.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side View.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the hollow stem; B,the hollowhandle; O, theventcap, and D the valve.

The stem A is closed at its upper end and open at its lower end, and it is preferably made to taper toward its lower or open end. The handle B projects from the hollow stem A at a suitable point intermediate of its ends, the same being cast in one piece therewith, and it is closed at its outer end.

The ventcap 0 is fitted into a hole in the side of the handle B, and is secured therein by means of a screwthread, as shown in Fig. 1.

The valve D has its seat on the inner end of the ventcap C, and rests thereon by gravity. I construct the valve D with a stem, 0, which fits into the vent-hole of the cap (3, and is of angular cross-section for guiding the valve without stoppin the influx of air.

In applying the apparatus to use, the stem A is driven into the bung of a barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, by taking hold of the handle B and striking the outer or closed end of the stem with a suitable instrument. If the pressure of air within the barrel now falls below that of the surrounding air the valve D is lifted from its seat for the admission of air to the barrel. If it is desired to clean the valve or its seat, this can be accomplished by the removal of the vent-cap from the handle.

It will be seen that the article obtained by my invention is extremely simple in its construction and comparatively inexpensive, while it performs the required office in an effective manner.

It will be observed that the body of my improved device consists of a casting which com prises the stem A, the handle B, a socket, d, for the reception of the vent-cap, and a head, f, to receive the blows of a hammer or mallet employed in driving the vent-plug into a keg or barrel.

The passage A through the stem A is continued through a portion of the length only of the handle B, thus leaving a solid end, I), of said handle, which is adapted to conform to the grasp of the operator.

In a patent granted August 13,1872, and numbered 130,379, a hollow arm is shown extending at right angles from the hollow stem, and said arm is provided at its end with a socket formed to receive a screw-plug or ventcap. In my device I extend this arm farther, so as to form the handle end I), which adds greatly to the utility of the device.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described vent'plug for barrels or casks, consisting of a metal casting formed with the hollow stem A, the handle B, made hollow a portion of its length and formed with a solid end, 1), adapted to be grasped by the operator, the socket (1, formed intermediate of the solid end I) of the handle and the stem A, and the enlarged headf, at the upper end of the stem, the said socket being provided with a vent-cap, O, for the valve D, all constructed and arranged as herein shown and specified.
