One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide an adz or other blade attachment for hammers; whereby the adz or other attachment will remain connected or'attached to the hammer, and particularly in which the adz or other attachment, remains resiliently connected or attached to the hammer so'thatit may yield to unusual distortion, but will at all times be tightly but yieldably connected to the hammer.

Another important object of this invention is to provide an adz or other bladeattachment for claw hammers in which the adz or other blade attachment may be securely and yet resiliently held by or attached to the hammer, even though the blade attachment is made very narrow, or the adz attachment is made extremely narrow and substantially the Width of the head of the hammer.

A further important object of this invention is the provision of simple means for preventing shavings from becoming lodged between the blade attachment and the head of the hammer.

Also an important object of this invention is to provide a novel, simple, and durable means for resiliently connecting the adz or other blade attachment to the hammer.

An object also of this invention is to provide an attachment of this class which may be conveniently carried in the pocket when not in use, and which may be easily and quickly connected to or detached from the hammer.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, I have devised a novel adz or other blade attachment for hammers, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a. hammer having straight claws, showing my blade attachment, in the form of an adz, detachably secured thereto;

Fig. 2 is an inner side view thereof, separate from the hammer;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof, taken through 3-3 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to that of Fig. 1 but showing the blade attachment on a curved claw hammer;

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of an adz attachment secured to a claw hammer but showing a slightly modified form of the strap connection for securing the attachment to the hammer; and,

- Fig. 6 is an inner side view of the adz member of the latter modification.

My adz or other blade attachment, shown in the drawing, is intended to be attached to and used with the'conventional straight or curved claw hammer, designated, respectively, I in Fig. 1 and 2 in Fig. 4. All of the views of the drawing show adz attachments, that is, in which the blade is positioned transversely with respect to the longitudinal extent of the hammer. The blade is preferably curved in its longitudinal extent, as in the usual adz construction.

The adz blade, designated H, has a. wedge lug [2 at th back or inner side. This lug is positioned at the median line of the adz blade and extends longitudinally with respect to the blade and is positioned nearer the upper end I i of the blade than the lower cutting edge ll thereof. This lug is provided with a long wedge-shaped cross-section 12*, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive the outwardly diverging claws l of the hammer I. This wedge portion [2 which is wedge-shaped longitudinally with respect to the blade, also has a transverse wedge or dovetail cross-section, as indicated by l2 in Fig. 3. This wedge or dovetail section l2 fits into the correspondingly shaped nail receiving recess between the claws of the hammer I.

The wedge lug l2 may be cast or forged integrally with the blade ll of steel. The whole tool may then be tempered and the temper drawn from th wedge lug portion.

The construction of the wedge lug of softer material facilitates the fitting of the attachment to various hammers, namely by permitting the opposite sides of the wedge lug to be filed readily to cause the desired fit.

At the inner side of the blade member is a transverse flange l3 which is positioned at the outer end of the wedge lug. This flange l3 provides a relatively Wide seat for the end portions and outer side of the claws of the hammer to prevent rocking movement of the blade with respect to the hammer. But this flange l3 performs another important function, namely that of preventing shavings, -or the like, from becoming lodged between the blade member and the claws of the hammer. The flange I3 is preferably integral with the blade and wedge lug.

Even though the claws of the hammer grip the wedge lug l2 tightly, use of the adz or other blade attachment causes the latter to be loosened and also the joint between the hammer claws in which one or the lower end 31 of the lug is considerably higher and provides a shoulder for 7 eyes which are screwed into the ends of the 1 springs.
