Description

June 1, 1943. sw- 2320574 PACKAGE Filed May 15, 1940 Patented June 1, 1943 UNITED STATES T E' F i C E PACKAGE Donald D. Swift, Hartford, Conn., assignor to M.
Swift & Sons, Inc., a corpcration of Connecticut 1 Claim.
My present invention relates to the gold leaf art, and has particular reference to a novel method of packaging gold leaf, and to the novel package obtained thereby.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide an improved package for gold leaf, which has its parts so arranged as to reduce the amount of spoilage resulting from handling and from shipment.
It is a further object of my invention to improve the makeup of a brick of gold leaf so as to eliminate damage to gold leaves resulting from flexing or bending of the bricks.
With the above and other objects and advantageou-s features in View, my invention consists of a novel method of packaging, and a novel package or book product, specifically designed for gold leaf products.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a novel book or package for gold leaf Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the open book or package, showing the use of novel end leaves; and
Fig. 3 is a perspectve View of a modified form.
It has been found desirable to improve the method of packaging gold leaf, and to improve the package itself, as the transportation and shipment of 'gold leaf packages or books result in an eXcessiVe amount of spoilage due to flexing or bending of the packages or books. This spoilage is a substantial item, and amounts to as much as 8%, wherefcre any improvement which will reduce or eliminate this spoilage is of very substantial value.
The present package or book is a small package containing twenty-six leaves of paper and twenty-five leaves of gold -therebetween, the paper being of a high rag content, and being sewed together with a fine twine such as Bible twine. The paper is preferably thin, like the tissue paper used for Bibles. sheets of gold leaf are preferably dusted with very fine rouge, to
'prevent adhering contact with the paper, and
the package is small so as to be easily handled.
It has been found that -handling the package, so as to slightly flex or bend the package, results in substantial damage to the gold leaves at the ends of the package, the leaves being so close to its limits of elasticity that any Stretch produces afissure or a flaw therein.
.I have found that the damge results from inablity of the gold leaf to slide or slip with respect to the paper pages on each side thereof. during flexing or bending, the slight frictional engagement being sufficient to break the gold leaf. I therefore utilize a paper or material which will permit increased slip or slidng of the gold leaf, my preferred material being glassine paper or Cellophane, which I utilize for the end leaves, and, if desi-red, for one or two of the adjacent leaves, whereby the gold leaves adjacent the covers of the package nay more freely slip and slide and thus resist the development of fissures and Cracks.
Thus, referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the novel package ID includes a plurality of paper leaves ll between which sheets of gold leaf z are positioned, the end leaf l3 being preferably of Cellophane or of glassine paper, and the gold leaves being dusted with very fine rouge in standard manner. This type of package has reduced spoilage to less than 1%, in comparison to the 8% spoilage hitherto resulting.
If desred, the package may be constructed as illustrated in Fig. 3. In this Construction, the package M includes a plurality of paper leaves l5 and a plurality (3 illustrated) of Cellophane or glassine paper end leaves [6, the gold leaf I'I being positioned between both the paper and Cellophane sheets.
While I have described certain specific embodiments of my invention and certain specific end sheets, it is obvious that changes in the number of end sheets and the material thereof may be made without departing -f-rom the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A gold leaf package comprising a plurality of paper sheets bound in book form between front and back covers, sheets of gold leaf filmed between said paper sheets, 'said gold being powdered with nely divided rouge, and a Cellophane* sheet between said front cover and said paper sheets and between the back cover and said paper sheets, said Cellophane sheets having a smooth surface adapted to minimize friction between 'said cover and said paper sheets when said book is flexed.
