Description
R. E. POGUE. Oar Coupling.
No. 232,061. Patented Sept. 7,1880.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR: V 6? @M BY VUAW A TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
ROBERT E. POGUE, OF QUINCY, KENTUCKY.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,061, dated September "7, 1880.
Application filed February 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. POGUE, of Quincy, in the county of Lewis and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Car-Couplin g, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of carcouplings which are known as selfacting couplers and it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of a coupler, a cap, and a series of levers, whereby provision is made for coupling the cars automatically and for uncoupling them without the necessity for going between the cars.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a coupling embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top view with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bumper or draw -head, which is provided with a rib or fin, at, having a groove, a 011 either side of it. The rib or fin has its front edge inclined upward toward the rear of the draw-head to serve as an inclined plane for the link, and its rear edge is vertical for engagement with the link after the manner of a coupling-pin.
B is a cap-hammer, which is hinged to the draw-head A by its rear end, so as to allow its front end to rise and fall. Both the draw-head and the capham mer are inclined, so that when in place together they present a flaring mouthpiece t'or the entrance of the link.
The draw-head and the cap-hammer maybe provided with rubber cushions to deaden the noise and prevent rattling.
On each side of the draw-head is pivoted a lever, 0. These two levers are connected at their front ends by a yoke, D, and at their rear ends by a yoke, E. The yoke D extends upward and bears againstthe underside of the cap-hanmier B. The yoke E extends above the draw-head in the rear of the cap-ham mer. By pressing down on the yoke E the yoke D is raised, so as to elevate the cap-hammer.
The levers G are connected near their front ends by a yoke, Gr, which extends diagonally upward and rearward to the rear of the caphammer B, where it bears against a latch, H, provided with a spring, J. This latch and spring co-operate with the weight of the cap hammer B in depressing the yoke D to prevent accidental uncoupling.
In the cap-hammer B works a catch, K, the rear end of which bears against the latch H when pressed on by the entering of the link. The link L has its ends square on the outside and rounded on the inside, by which means greater strength is obtained.
On the upper and lower sides of the ends of the link are grooves for facilitating the e11- gagement of the link with the web a when coupling on a curve.
In using this coupling the end of the link L enters the flaring mouth-piece formed by the draw-head A and cap-hammer B. The end of the link first strikes and passes the catch K, and then drops down behind the vertical portion of the web a, which serves as a couplingpin.
When the cars are to be uncoupled the yoke E is depressed, so as to raise the yoke D and elevate the cap-hammer B, and the link may then be withdrawn.
The yoke E may be extended either verticaliy or laterally, so as to be operated either from the top of a car or from one side thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. The levers G and yokes D and E, in combination with the draw-head A and cap-hammer B, as herein shown and described.
2. The latch H and spring J, in combination with the draw-head A, cap-hammer B, yoke G, levers G, and yokes D and E, as herein shown and described.
ROBERT EDWIN POGUE.
