0. A. HOTOHKISS. Toy Handkerchief.
No. 232,034. Patented Sept. 7,1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. HOTOHKISS, OF BRIDGEPORT, OONNEGTIOUT, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD R. IVES, OF SAME PLAGE, AND CORNELIUS BLAKESLEE, OF
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOY HANDKERCHIEF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,034, dated. September 7, 1880.
Application filed June 2, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Ho'rca- KISS, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, have inventeda certain new'and Improved Toy Handkerchief, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a handkerchief-toy which may be applied to the nose to cover the same, and an attached sound- IO producing device, operated simultaneously, preferably by the mouth, to simulate the noise produced by blowing the nose, thereby affording great amusement to juveniles.
To this end my invention consists in the combination, with a toy handkerchief or fabric representing or similar to a handkerchief, of a sound-producin g device attached thereto and capable of being operated while the handkerchief or fabric is applied to cover the nose.
It also consists in. the combination, with a toy handkerchief or fabric representing or similar to a handkerchief, of a wind-soundprorlucing device attached thereto and capable of being operated by the month while the handkerchief is applied to cover the nose. A pocket may be formed on the back of the handkerchief or fabric to receive the soundproducing device and attach it to the hand kerchief or fabric.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is apcrspective view of a handkerchief and attached sound-producing device, the handkerchief being folded inside out; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the handkerchief and longitudinal section of the souml-producing device.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a handkerchief or fabric rep- 0 resenting or similar in its general appearance to a handkerchief. It may be made of linen, cotton, or other textile material, and ornamented with a border, according to the taste of the manufacturer.
5 B designates a sound producing device,
which may be of any suitable kind, and is attached to the handkerchief or fabric A. I have shown it as a \vind-sound-producing device, consisting of a trumpet-shaped piece with a mouthpiece, a, at one end and a reed orlike 5o device, I), at the other. It may be attached in various ways to the handkerchief or fabric A.
A simple way is to form a pocket, 0, on the back of a handkerchief or fabric by stitching a piece of fabric around the sides and one end thereto, leaving the opposite end open, so that the mouthpiece of the souml-producing device can protrude through it.
I desire it. to be distinctly understood that I do not confine myself to the particular kind of soundproducing device, or even to any wind-soundproducing device. Neither do I confine myselfto any particular way of attaching the same to the hamlkerchief, or to attaching it in close contact with the handkerchief.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l. The comb nation, with a toy handkerchief or fabric representing or similar to a handkerchief, of a sound-producing device attached thereto and capable of being operated while the handkerchief or fabric is applied to cover the nose.
2. The combination, with a toy handkerchief or fabric representing 01" similar to a harulkerchief, of a wimlsound-producing de vice attached thereto and capable of being operated by the month while the handkerchief is applied to cover the nose.
3. The combination, with a toy handker- 8o chief or fabric representing or similar to a handkerchief, of a sound-producing device and a pocket adapted to receive and hold the sound-producing device, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES A. HOTCHKISS.
