Description

May' 25, 1943. I B. A. ARNOLD CASE TO HOLD TOILET ARTICLES Filed April 13, 1942 ATTORNEY Patented May 25, 1943 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE CASE TO HOLD TOILET ARTICLES Berel A. Arnold, Boston, Mass, assignor to Knight Leather Products 00., Inc., Boston, Mass, a corporation Application April-13, 1942, Serial No. 438,763
' 6 Claims. 01. 229-6) particularly firm and durable side walls, at a:
low manufacturing cost. Another object is to so construct said case that it is economical to manufacture the parts and simple to assemble them into a finished case. A further object is to so conceal the means that strengthen the said side walls that they are not apparent to the ordinary user of such a case, thus giving it a smooth appearance.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construc tion, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of my case stand ing upright and in closed position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my case in open position, lying on its back with the front CQVGI' broken away.
from the rear of Figure 1, with a portion broken away to show the tongue extension means that anchor the side walls to the bottom.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5'5 of Figure 4..
Figure 6 is a perspective detail view of the extension tongue parts and part of the side wall from which they extend.
As illustrated my case is commonly made of sections of cardboard or similar material hingedly joined together by means of leather or similar covering, as later explained.
Said case has a back ll connected to which is a top cover l3 having a front flap is. At
each side is a side wall It fastened to said back II and preferably inset from the outside edges of said back. Also connected to said back is a bottom H to which a front I8 is hingedly connected. Spaced inwardly a short distance from each side extremity of said bottom H are slots which extend through said bottom. The bulk of said case is preferably made of cardboard 22 to the inside of which is cemented or otherwise fastened leather or similar covering 23 to give it a rich and smooth appearance. Likewise the outside of said case is covered with leather or similar-material 24. These construction materials 22, 23 and 24 are stitched together by thread 25 or the like.
At the rear of said side walls 16 are flange portions 26 which are an extension of said outside leather covering 24, and they are attached to said back I l by stitching 21. Said flange portions 26 extend at substantially right angles to said side walls It so that the stitching '2'! holds said flange portions 26 substantially flat against said back i I, thereby insetting said side walls 16 from each side extremity in substantial alinement with said slots 29 in the bottom ll.
Each said side wall I6 has a tab tongue extension 30 at the bottom thereof which is formed by two extensions 39a and 30b. Said extension 30a is a continuation of said inner covering 23 and extends at a right angle beyond said side wall l6. Said extension 3% is a continuation of said outside covering 24 on each said side wall. Said extension tongues 30a. and 39b flare outwardly towards their outside end where they exceed the width of said slot 20 in the bottom ll. Said extension 5% is sufficiently wider than said inner tongue 30a to cover it. A strip of adhesive tape 3| is preferably united to said tongue extension 301) being fastened to a side wall it as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing.
Said tongue extension 30, composed of the parts 30a, 30b and 31, extends through said slots 2!] in said bottom and then extends inwardly a short distance at substantially right angles to said side walls i5 and are cemented or otherwise united to pieces of adhesive tape 32 on said bottom ll. This construction anchors said side walls 16 firmly in place, yet the mean of doing this, namely the tongue extension 3%, is not noticeable, being almost wholly concealed, thus presenting a smooth exterior at the luncture of said side walls Hi with said bottom l'l.
Said outside covering 24 that covers said bottom I! also serves to cover over said extension 38, thus concealing it.
A loop 3.4 attached at said front i8 is adapted to receive a tab 35 that is attached to said front flap M to thereby provide a means of holding my case closed. 1
Vfhat I claim is:
1. A case for toilet articles comprising two side walls, a back and a bottom, said side walls being fastened to said back and spaced inwardly from the outer side edges thereof, said side walls embodying an inner covering having a tongue extension and an outer covering having a tongue extension, said bottom having slots therein at opposite side extremities spaced from the outside edges thereof, said tongue extensions extending through said slots and being attached to said bottom.
2. A case for toilet articles comprising a back, a bottom and a top attached to said back, a front hingedly attached to said bottom adjacent the latters front edge, two opposite side walls attached to said back, said side walls embodying an inner covering having a tongue extension and an outer covering having a tongue extension, said bottom having slots therein at opposite side ex tremities spaced from the outside edges thereof, said tongue extensions extending through said slots and extending along said bottom at substantially right angles to said walls and being attached to said bottom, said bottomhaving an outer covering that covers said tongue extensons.
3. A case for toilet. articles comprising a back, a bottom and a top attached to said back,'a front hingedly attached to said bottom at the latters front edge, two opposite side walls attached to said back at a point inset from the outer side edges thereof, said side walls extending to said bottom, said side walls .embodyingan'inner covering having atongue extension, 'and'an outer covering having a tongue .extension,-said bottom having slots therein at opposite ends spaced from the side extremities thereof and directly below said side walls, said tongue extensions flaring outwardly towards their outer ends and extending through said slots and extending along said bottom at substantially right angles to said walls and being attached'to said bottom, said outer layer tongue extension being attached to said other tongue extension.
4. A case for toilet articles comprisinga back, a bottom and atop attached to said back, a front tongue extension, an outer covering having a tongue extension and a stifiener piece between said inner covering and outer covering but terminating at said bottom, said bottom having slots therein at opposite sides spaced from the side extremities thereof and directly below said side walls, said tongue extensions flaring outwardly towards their outer ends and extending through said slots and extending along said bottom at substantially right angles to said walls and being attached to said bottom, said outer covering tongue extension being larger than said inner covering tongue extension and being attached to and covering it, said bottom having an outer covering that covers it and covers said .tongue extensions.
v5. A case for toilet-articles comprisingatfront, two side walls, a back and a bottom, ithe surface area of either said front or back'exceeding'thatof a said side Wall, said side walls being fastened to said backa-nd embodying an innercovering having'a tongue extension and an outer "covering having a tongue extension, said bottom having slots therein -at'opposite sides, :saidtongue =extensions extending through said slots and being attached to said bottom.
