Description

(NoModeL) H. R. 8L D. E. BENNETT.
Plow
" No. 231,985. Patented Sept. 7, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM R. BENNETT AND DANIEL E. BENNETT, OF STERLING, MICHIGAN.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,985. dated September 7, 1880.
Application filed May 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HIRAM R. BENNETT and DANIEL E. BENNETT, of Sterling, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to plows; and it consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a plow embodying the improvements in this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig.3 isa sectional detail view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the stock, and B the beam, of an ordinary shovel-plow frame. The handles U G are, however, connected by an auxiliary bar, I). A. notched cross-bar, E, extends from handle to handle, and is also secured to the upper end of the stock A.
A shovel-plow point, S, is secured to the lower end of the stockA in the usual manner, and is provided with wings F F, hinged thereto by links a. or otherwise. These wings F are provided near their outer edges with eyes b, with which hooks G G engage. These hooks G G are connected to a lever, H, fulcrumed at c to the rear face of the stock A, one hook bein g on each side of the fulcral point, as shown. This lever H extends upwardly between the cross-bar E and the bar D, where it is provided with a spring, It, to hold itin thenotches in the cross-bar E.
The stock A is perforated laterally near its lower end to receive bolts d cl, which fasten the arms I, carrying at their lower ends the wheel K. Two perforations are made, in order (No model.)
that the arms maybe moved to adjust the wheel 5 K up or down. i
It will be seen that the wheel is directly be ncath the plow-point, which arrangement ena' bles the plowman to handle the plow with greater ease, and also relieves the team from the draft to a certain extent-via, about onethirdand also enables the plowman to prevent the plow from running too deeply into the ground, and perinits him to transport the plow from place to place with greater ease than heretofore.
The lever connected by hooks to the wings F may be thrown from the central notch to the right or left hand side to extend or contract the wings to cause them to make a narrow or wide furrow, as may be desired. These wings are hinged to the rear face of the shovel-point, as shown, so that the onteredges of the sh ovelpoint overlap the inner edges of the wings so that the plow will not clog at the connection.
The outer edges of the wings are curved, as shown, so as to present no abrupt point to interfere with the entrance of the plow into the ground.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvement in plows, the beam B, stock A, handles G 0, having auxiliary crossbar D and notched cross-bar E, shovel-point S, having hinged wings F F, hooked connecting-rods G G, and lever H, having spring R, all combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM R. BENNETT. DANIEL E. BENNETT.
Witnesses:
