ERASER AND PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,196, dated March 8, 1859; Ressued August 30,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD G. SHAvEn, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have Vinvented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode of Constructing Paper Erasers and Pencil- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the form and shape of a paper eraser, in combination with a pencil Sharpener, paper smoother and folder.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The drawing: Figure l a face view of the eraser; Fig. 2, a side view of ditto.
I make the blade A of good and suitable steel, shaped as shown in Fig. l, and curved as shown in Fig. 2, with a flat shank B fastened into the handle C, in a proper manner. Between the blade and the shank, on each edge, I make circular indents D, D, with keen edges to form the cutterst-o sharpen pencils, and on the face of the shank C, I make an acute triangular groove E, with teeth similar to a small file. This groove is to finish sharpening of the pencil by rubbing it up to a line needle point.

The utility of my combined eraser, pencil Sharpener, &c., is in the convenience and usefulness for the counting room, oiflce, and studio, and the variety of purposes in drawing and writing.
Vhat- I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The curved blade eraser, with the circular edge pencil Sharpener, and the groove for finishing the pencil point, in combination, in the manner and for the purposes, substantially as herein set forth and described.
