Description

W. G. MANN SGAFFOLD CLAMP May 18, 1943 Filed April '7, 1942 ATTORNEK" Patented May 18, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application April 7, 1942, Serial No. 437,961 In Great Britain February 4, 1942 2 Claims.
This invention relates to scaffold clamps and it has for its object toprovide a clamp of simple form having no separable parts, whereby two poles or other members of a scafiolding may either be so connected that they lie at a right angle to each other or they may be so connected that they are parallel to each other with the ends overlapping.
In order that the invention may be the better understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is an end view of the clamp as arranged to connect two poles or other members in a position parallel to one another.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the body of the clamp.
Fig. 4 is an end view.
Figs. 5, 6 and '7 are respectively a front View,
limb 4 being provided upon the opposite side at the end thereof. The upper ends of the limbs are disposed at such an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body I that they lie upon a line running transversely of the said body at an angle of 45 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The limb 3 is provided at its upper end with a perforation 5 through which passes a pin whereby the cap 6 is hingedly connected thereto; The upper end of the shorter limb 4 is perforated for the passage of a pin by means of which a throw over bolt 1 is pivotally connected to said limb. The free end of the cap 6 is bifurcated to permit the passage of the bolt 1 and preferably each of the ends of the limbs formed by the bifurcation is provided upon its upper face at the end of the said limb with a projection 8 designed to prevent the movement of the nut 9 of the bolt 1 which is provided with a collar IB resting upon the upper surface of the limbs, to such an extent as will free the cap. The cap is provided upon its under face with recesses whereby the pole engaged thereby may be placed in a position parallel with the pole 2a as shown in the drawing or at a right angle to said pole 2a.
Interposed between the two poles is a body H which is provided with an eye l2 through which passes a link I3, said link also passing through a perforation formed for it in the shorter limb 3 of body I. By this means, when so desired the body I I, may be swung into a position where it is clear of the body I of the clamp. I3 indicates a screw passing through one of the walls of body I and by means of which the pole 2 may be secured against accidental movement preparatory to clamping it in position.
I claim:
1. A scaffold clamp comprising a body part of U-shaped cross-sectional outline for engaging a pole, an upstanding limb at one end of one of the walls of said body, an extension at the free end of said limb, said extension lying at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal axis of the body of the clamp, an upstanding limb at the other end of the other wall of said body, an extension upon the free end of said limb, said extension lying at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal axis of the body of the clamp, a cap engaging a second pole, means hingedly connecting one end of said cap to the extension upon the free end of one limb, means adjustably and releasably connecting the other end of said cap to the extension upon the second limb, said cap lying at an angle of 45 with respect to the first pole, a body interposed between the pole engaged by the body of the clamp and the pole engaged by the cap, a recess upon the under surface of said body to engage the first pole, recesses upon the upper surface of said body to engage the second pole, and recesses upon the under surface of the cap to engage the second pole.
2. A scaffold clamp comprising a body part of U-shaped cross-sectional outline for engaging a pole, an upstanding limb at one end of one of the walls of said body, an extension at the free end of said limb, said extension lying at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal axis of the body of the clamp, an upstanding limb at the other end of the other wall of said body, an extension upon the free end of said limb, said extension lying at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal axis of the body of the clamp, a cap engaging a second pole, means hingedly connecting one end of said cap to the extension upon the free end of one limb, means adjustably and releasably connecting the other end of said cap to the extension upon the second limb, said cap lying at an angle of 45 with respect to the first pole, a body interposed between the pole engaged by the body of the clamp and the pole engaged by the cap, a pole.
engaging recess upon the upper face of said body, said recess having its axis disposed at an angle of 45 with respect to the line of the cap, a second pole engaging recess upon the upper face of said body, said recess having its axis disposed at an angle of 90 with respect to the first recess, a recess upon the underside of said body for engaging the pole engaged by the body part of the clamp, a recess upon the under face of the cap disposed at an angle of 45 with respect to the line of said cap, a second recess upon the underside of said cap disposed at an angle of 90 with respect to the said first recess.
