Pressure is then exerted upon the free end of the handle 13, moving the same into substantially the position shown in Figure 1. This movement will result in a relative change in position of the end of the handle connected to the link 11 and that portion of the locking plate to which the chain 7 has been connected, moving the respective ends of the chains 7 and 9 in opposite directions and correspondingly bind the arms 1 and 2 upon the container 20. The movement of the locking lever is continued until the side bars of the link 11 are embraced in the recesses 16 of the locking plate to thereby prevent any possibility of a lateral swing of the lever and a loosening of the clamp. The lever may be temporarily fixed in such clamping relation as, for example, through the medium of a. chain 21 secured at one terminal of a fixture and arranged to permit an appropriate link thereof. to engage a hook 22 on the handle 13 of the locking lever.
When desiring to release the clamp, all that is necessary is to exert a sutlicient pull upon the free end of the chain 7 to dislodge the holding link seated in the recess 19 and at the same time displace the link in the slot 18. This immediately trees both arms 1 and 2 and releases the clamp.
It is obvious that Within the limits of the clamping action of the arms 1 and 2, the clamp is completely adjustable for any link of the chain 7 may be made the operative holding link in connection with the lever and as it is intended that this chain shall be of appropriate length, it is apparent that the clamping efi'ect may with equal facility be applied to containers which may be com pletely embraced by the arms 1 and 2 or of such size as to be only partially embraced by said arms.
The clamp of the present invention is admirably designed for the purpose intended and it is to be noted avoids what may be termed a positive connection for tightening the clamp. That is to say, no hooks for cooperation with the chain 7 are used as obviously the use of such would necessitate the return of the lever to an inoperative position before releasing the clamp, thus necessitating a loss of time.

1. A clamp comprising clamping arms, a chain connected to each of said arms, and a locking lever carried by one of said chains, said lever being formed to receive and cooperate with two adjacent links of the other of said chains and hold one of said links transverse the other for locking purposes and being further tormed to cooperate with a link of the chain with which it is connect ed to maintain the alignment of the lever.
2. A clamp comprising clamping arms, a chain connected to one of said arms, and a locking lever carried by the other of said arms, said levcr being formed to receive and cooperate with two adjacent links of said chain and hold one 01' said links transverse the other for locking purposes, the chain being separable from the lever by a pull on the chain to dislodge the link at right angles to the lever.

A clamp comprising clamping arms arranged to embrace an object to be. clamped, a chain connected to one 01 the arms, a second chain connected to the other of said arms, and a locking lcver carried by the second chain and tormed to permit the bodily insertion of a link ol the first mentioned chain and to hold an adjacent link of said first mentioned chain at right angles to the inserted link, said lever being movable to carry the respective ends of the chains toward each other to exert a clamping movement on the arms.
4. A clamp comprising clamping arms, a locking lever movably connected to one of said arms, a locking plate carried by said lever and formed with a slot arranged longitudinally of the plate and a recess disposed transversely of the slot, and a chain connected to the other of said clamping arms with its links of a size to seat in said slot and with an end wall to cooperate with the recess to arrange such link transverse the locking plate.
5. A clamp comprising clamping arms, a locking lever movably connected to one of said arms, a locking plate carried by the lever, a chain connected to the other of said arms, said locking plate being formed to receive one of the links of said chain in the longitudinal plane of the locking plate and hold the next adjacent link of said chain at right angles to-the locking plate, means to operate the locking lever to exert an endwise pull on the chain, and means to hold the locking lever in locking position.
6. A clamp comprising clamping arms, a link chain connected to one of said arms, a locking lever connected to the terminal link of said chain, a second chain carried by the other of said arms, a locking plate carried by the lever formed to cooperate with adjacent links of said last mentioned chain to interconnect the chain and plate, said lever being operable on the first mentioned chain to exert an endwise pull on the respective chains to bind the clamping lever, and means on the locking plate to cooperate with the final link of the first mentioned chain to prevent lateral play of the lever when in locking position.
7. A clamp comprising clamping arms,, a link chain connected to one of said arms, a
