My invention relates to trousers supporting means and has for an object to provide a novel type of Suspenders which in cooperation with a novel and adaptable form of shirt will permit the Suspenders to be worn concealed beneath said shirt, and is of special advantage to those who nd it inconvenient to depend upon a belt to support the trousers, preferring to use Suspenders for that purpose but at the same time wishing to avoid the appearance of exposed Suspenders worn in the usual way over the shirt.

A further advantage lies in the fact that when off the trousers the Suspenders are attached to the shirt in such a way as to be easily attached to the trousers and are also readily detachable from the shirt.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a positive relationship between the shirt and trousers may be maintained, thus preventing any undesirable creeping or blousing of the shirt.

Still a further object of the invention is that, whereas in present day Suspenders means are provided for the adjustment of the lengths of the two front members but no means are provided for the adjustment of the length of the rear member beneath the point of juncture with the front members, I have provided such adjusting means whereby the rear member may be lengthened or shortcned, thus enabling the wear to locate the said point of juncture at a convenient position on his back.

Other and further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description of it, taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front view in perspective of my invention showing the relation of shirt, trousers and Suspenders as on the wearer.

Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment plate forming the ends of the Suspenders and of the cooperating strip attached to the trousers.

Fig. 4 is a View of the portion of the shirt showing a slit therein to receive the ends of the suspenders and a covering strip.

Referring to the drawing, the Suspenders of my invention are composed of two members I and 2 made of suitable webbing and of suiicient length to extend upwardly from the top of the trousers along the iront of the upper portion of the body of the wearer, across the shoulders and down to a point on the back Where they merge and thence continue as a single member 3 to the trousers as shown in Fig. 1. The three members are eachl provided with means for attaching them to the trousers, which are held in adjustable loops thereof to permit varying the length of the Suspenders by means of the buckles 4. Since the three attachment means are identical in construction, the following detailed description of one of them will sufce. 5 is a small plate preferably of metal bent around at its bottom end to form a hook 6 adapted to engage a metal strip l securely fastened at each of its ends by sewing or otherwise, as at 8, to the inside of the waistband of the trousers and at sufcient depth below the upper edge 9 of said trousers so that the top of the hook 6, and the slot IIJ will be below said upper edge when the hook E is in engagement with the strip 'I. The downwardly disposed tongue II can be formed either as a stamped out portion of the flat piece 5 as shown, or it may be a separate piece riveted or otherwise attached thereto at its upper end. Its function is to hold the shirt to the plate 5 against upward movement. Each of the plates 5 is connected to an end of the members I, 2 and 3, respectively, by means of the slot i2 in the upper end of the plate 5 through which the members I, 2 and 3 are passed in the form of loops, the free ends being attached to the buckles 4.

The shirt I4 to be used in connection with my invention may be of any standard typ-e except that it is provided with three horizontal slits I3 positioned a short distance above the upper edge 9 of the trousers in line with the points of attachment of the Suspenders to the trousers, said slits having a length just sufficient to enable the plate 5 and its attached suspender member to pass therethrough. Attached to the outside of said shirt at a level just above that of each of the slits I3 is a strip I5 composed of two plies of cloth sewed together along their edges. The outer ply I is composed of the same material as the shirt, and if the material of the shirt has a pattern printed or woven therein, the outer ply IS should be a continuation of that pattern so as to render the strip l5 practically indistinguishable. 'I'he inner ply Il which may be composed of stronger material is provided with a number of spaced apart buttonholes i8 to receive the tongue II. Such a plurality o1" buttonholes will accommodate the shirt to different heights of the waistbands of various trousers or enable the same pair of trousers to be worn at different heights with respect to the shirt.

The strip I5, which is of a width somewhat greater than the length of the slit I3 so as to completely cover it and the ends of the Suspenders passing therethrough, is fastened to the shirt only at its upper end as by the stitching I9 from which it depends loosely and is of suiiicient length so that the lower end may be pulled through the slot III in the plate 5 as shown in Fig. 2. Loops 20 are fastened to the inside of the shirt at the shoulders to receive the front members I and 2 of the Suspenders and hold the Suspenders in position Within the shirt.

In operation the front members of the suspenders are passed through the loops 20 on the inside of the shirt and the three ends thereof are brought to the outside through the respective slits I3 and beneath the strips I5. The tongues II are then inserted in the appropriate buttonholes I8 in the inner ply I'I of the strips I5, after which the ends of the strips I5 are each drawn through the respective slots I whereby the hooks 6 are maintained in position on the outside or" the shirt, the tongues II are secured in position in their appropriate buttonholes and the shirt is prevented from upward movement when the shirt is put on and the hooks 6 are engaged with the strap I on the inside of the trousers. The proportions of the slots I and the strips I5 are such that the ends of the strips I5 t tightly in said slots.

The specic construction of my invention as illustrated and described may be varied in many respects without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. In combination a pair of Suspenders and a shirt, said Suspenders consisting of two front members and a back member and being provided with means for adjusting the length of each of said members, means for attaching them to trousers on the inside of the waistband thereof at a level below the upper edge of said trousers, and said shirt being provided with a plurality of slits adapted to permit the passage of said suspender members therethrough located substantially in line with the points of attachment of said Suspenders to said trousers when said shirt, trousers and suspenders are in place upon a wearer, a strip adapted to cover said slit and attached to the outside of said shirt, and having a slit therein, said trousers attaching means cornprising a plate having its lower end bent in the form of a hook to engage the trousers, a downy Wardly extending clip positioned above said hook to engage the slit in said strip, and a slot between said hook and said clip to receive said strip.

2. In combination a pair of Suspenders and a shirt, means for attaching said Suspenders to trousers on the inside of the waistband thereof at a level below the upper edge of saidy trousers, and said shirt being provided with a plurality of slits adapted to permit the passage oi' said suspenders therethrough located substantially in line with the points of attachment of said suspenders to said trousers when said shirt, trousers and Suspenders are in place upon a wearer, a strip adapted to cover said slit and attached to the outside of said shirt, and having a slit therein, said trousers attaching means Icomprising a plate having its lower end bent in the form of a hook to engage the trousers, a downwardly extending clip positioned above said hook to engage the slit in said strip, and a slot between said hook and said clip to receive said strip.

In combination a pair of Suspenders and a. shirt, means for attaching said Suspenders to trousers on the inside of the waistband thereof at a level below the upper edge of said trousers, and said shirt being provided with a plurality of slits adapted to permit the passage of said Suspenders therethrough located substantially in line with the points of attachment of said Suspenders to said trousers when said shirt, trousers and suspenders are in place upon a wearer, a strip adapted to cover said slit and attached to the outside of said shirt, said trousers attaching means comprising a plate having its lower end bent in the form of a hook to engage the trousers and means carried by said plate for attaching said plate to said strip at a level above the point of attachment of the Suspenders to the trousers.

4. A pair of Suspenders adapted for wear beneath a shirt, including means for attaching said Suspenders to trousers on the inside of the waistbandthereof at a level below the upper edge of said trousers, said means comprising a plate having its lower end bent in the form of a hook to engage the trousers, a downwardly extending clip positioned above said hook adapted to engage said shirt and prevent upward movement thereof and a slot between said hook and said clip adapted to receive a portion of said shirt.

5. In a shirt adapted for use with a pair of suspenders having a plurality of plates at the ends thereof, each provided with trousers engaging means and a clip positioned above said means adapted to engage the shirt, the combination of a shirt body having a plurality of slits therein each adapted to permit the passage therethrough of one of said suspender plates. said slits being locateclsubstantially in line with the points of attachment of the trousers engaging means to the trousers when the shirt, trousers and Suspenders are in place upon a wearer, a strip of material secured at its upper end to the outside of the shirt body at a point above each of said slits whereby to overlie and cover said slits, and a slit in each of said strips for receiving the clip on the plate passi ing through the slit in the shirt body at a level above the point of attachment of the trousers engaging means to the trousers when said strip is disposed in a fully extended position.

d. In a shirt adapted for use with a pair of suspenders having a plurality of plates at the ends thereof each provided with trouser engaging means and a clip positioned above said means adapted to engage the shirt, the combination of ,a shirt body having a plurality oi slits therein each adapted to permit the passage therethrough of one of said suspender plates, said slits being located substantially in line with the points of attachment of the trouser engaging means to the trousers when the shirt, trousers and Suspenders are in place upon a wearer, a strip of material secured at its upper end to the outside of the shirt body at a point above each of the said slits Whereby to overlie and cover said slits, and a plurality of slits in each of said strips for receiving the clip on the plate passing through the slit in the shirt body at a selected level above the point of attachment of the trouser engaging means to the trousers when said strip is disposed in a fully extended position.
