N- PETERS. PHDTO-LITHOGRAPHER- WV'H'NGTDN D r SAMUEL BARROW, DAVID BABROW, AND JACOB BAR-ROW, 01? INDIAN-' APOLIS, INDIANA.
STEAM BC I LER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,521, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed March 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL BARROW, DAVID BARROW, and .TAcoB BARROW, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvements relate to feed-waterheaters for boilers; and our invention consists in a heating-box combined with a tubular flueboiler in a manner to form one side of a chamber into which the flues discharge. Such heating-box is hinged to the main boiler, and the inlet and outlet pipes from the box are provided with separable joints, so that the box may be swung out to give access to the flues. The box is also provided with a filtering-chamber between its inlet and outlet for filtering the feed-water. These features, with other details of construction constituting our invention,
will be particularly described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, formin g part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partially broken open. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line w as of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The body of the boiler is preferably made with semicircular top and bottom and vertical sides, as shown. The fire-box a is contained withinjthe main shell, so as to be entirely surrounded by water except at the front, which opens through the front plate of the boiler,
which opening is the full size of the fire-box, and is fitted with a door, I). The doors 0 d, for ordinary use in firing and clearing out ashes, are hung on the door I), the door 0 opening above the grate e and door d to the ash-pit below.
From the back plate, f, of the fire-box tubes I g pass through the water-space and the back of the boiler, and there are also tubes h, which extend from the back to the front outside of the fire-box a and terminate in a-fiue, t. This flue i is formed by a flanged annular plate, hinged so as to close against the boiler front (ModeL) upon the fines g and encircling the door I). At the top the flue t'coincides with the bottom of the chimney i.
At the back of the boiler is fitted the heating-box B, which is hinged at 7.", so as to be swung open to give access to the flues g h, and is formed with a flange, Z, that bears upon the back of the boiler when the box B is closed, to form a space into which the dues 9 discharge. Upon the side of box B opposite to the hinge 7c are fitted the inlet-pipe l and outlet-pipe m, the former connecting with the pipe l from the feed-water pumps and the latter with the pipe m, that enters the water-space of the boiler. The connections between pipes Z, l, and m are made by tapering socket-joints t, which come together when the box B is closed, and the pipes l m are fitted with swinging shackles n, provided with screws 11., by which the parts can be drawn tightly together to make water-tight joints.
In the pipes l m there are cocks 0, which are to be closed to prevent escape of water from the boiler when the box B is swung back.
In the lower portion of the box B is a manhole head, 19, for removal in cleaning out the box, and there is also a man-hole at the front of the boiler.
In the box B, between the pipes im, there are fitted horizontal plates 1", which are perforated, and contain between them filtering material. The water, passingin by pipe I and out by pipe m, is compelled to pass through the filtering medium.
In the front of box B, between the plates 7, is a man-hole head, 8, which gives opportunity for cleaning the filter and renewing the material.
By the above-described construction the feed-water passing through the box B is heated by the products of combustion from the flue 9 previous to their return by flues h. The water in the boiler is also rapidly heated by the equal distribution of the tines throughout the water-space, and there is but little opportunity for loss of heat by radiation. The parts are pipes l l m m, having socket-joints, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The feed-water heating-box B, provided with plates 1", for retaining filtering material between the ends of the pipes lm, substantially as shown and described.
