Description

T. HJB. TURNER & H, A. LOGAN. School Desk and Seat.
No. 231,509. Patented Aug. 24,1880.
Nv PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGHAFHER. WASHINGTON D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. B. TURNER AND HORACE A. LOGAN, OF CLINTON COUNTY, MO.
SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,509, dated August 24, 1880. Application filed August 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS H. B. TURNER and HORACE A. LOGAN, of the county of Clinton, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and ImprovedGombined Adjustable and Reversible Desk and Seat for Schools; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a 1o part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of the desk and seat combined. Fig. 2 is a crosssectioual view, showing the desk portion and back. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, showing the seat and back, and Fig. 4 is a top view.
The object of this invention is to enable the user to vertically adjust the desk or the seat to the proper height; and to this end it con sists of standards having on their front and rear sides dovetail grooves running through their entire length. Into the grooves on one side of the standards the seat-standards operate by means of dovetail tongues, and on the opposite side the desk is attached in like manner to the standard. Both the seat and the desk are held at an y desired elevation by means of screws passing-through the standards into the tongues, as will hereinafter be more fully 0 set forth.
In the drawings, B represents the standards, having suitable feet, and united to each other at the base by a cross-piece, B. The standards are provided on the front and rear sides with dovetailed grooves l. The desk E is placed on brackets F, which are provided on the back edges with dovetail tongues corresponding with the grooves I in the standards B. The seat-supports (J on the opposite side of the standards B are connected with each other by means of the cross-piece G, forming a back for the seat J. These seat-supports U are also provided with dovetail tongues, similar to those in brackets F.
When the seat and desk are adjusted in the grooves a screw or screws, H, pass through the standards B and enter the tongues I, thus holding the seat and desk firmly at any desired elevation.
By having the grooves on the opposite sides of the standards similar, as well as the tongues on both the brackets F and seat-supports O, the positions of the scholars can readily be changed to face either direction, and the seat and desk can be adjusted independent of each other.
Having described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a desk and seat, a standard, B, having on its front and rear sides dovetail grooves of similar size for the reception of a desk and seat having corresponding dovetail tongues, as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the standards B. having dovetail grooves on opposite sides, with the desk E, having brackets F, provided with dovetail tongues, and seat-supports (3, having dovetail tongues, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
