Description

(NoMocleL) G. DESBROUGH.
Heel Protector and Supporter for Rubber Shoes. No. 231,409. Patented Aug. 24,1880.

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE DESBROUGH, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK.
HEEL PROTECTOR AND SUPPORTER FOR RUBBER SHOES.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,409, dated August 24, 1880.
' Application filed May 26, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE DESBROUGH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel Protectors and Supporters; a-nd I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, like parts being indicated by the same letters in the several figures of the said drawings.
My invention relates to protectors and supporters for the heels of shoes, my device being more especially adapted to the heels of rubber overshoes; and it consists in a metallic heel protector and supporter having a horizontal flange extending under the heel, and a flange vertical or nearly vertical, against which the back of the heel rests, the device being also provided with lips or tongues to support the back of the heel and prevent it from tearing. Further, the device has a notched or corrugated edge at the principal bearing part, projecting a little below the horizontal flange, so that slipping is prevented.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the heel protector and supporter. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device. Fig.3 is a rear view, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view.
A designates the horizontal flange to extend under the heel, and B the vertical flange rising from the flange A, both parts being made solid in one piece, conforming to the heel of 40 the shoe.
The lips or tongues b project upward, as shown, so as to support the back of the heel, and have holes for rivets c, by which they are secured to the shoe. The flange A is also provided with holes for rivets. The corrugated edge a is made to extend somewhat below the flange A, (see Fig. 2,) so that slipping is prevented.
The device being set in position against the heel of the shoe, and being secured by means of the rivets, effectually protects and supports that part of the heel of the shoe which is most subject to wear and straining, while the shoe is prevented from slipping by the corrugated edge.
The heel protector as described, though adapted more particularly to rubber overshoes, may be applied to boots and shoes of other kinds.
Having described my invention, I claim- The heel protector and supporter having the horizontal flange A, the flange B, and tongues b, and provided with the corrugated edge a, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. DESBRO UGH.
