Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC G. OHANDLEE, OF WOODBERBY, ASSIGNOB TO WILLIAM E. HOOPER & SONS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
LAM P-WICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,400, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed May 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC G. CHANDLEE, of Woodberry, Baltimore county, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in Lamp-Wicks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The nature of my invention is fully set forth in the following specification and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its con st-ruction and operation.
In the drawing, which is a sectional perspective of part of the wick-tube of a lamp, A and A represent the tube; B B, the wick in the tube; 0 (J, a strip of paper pasted on the wick with mucilage or any proper adhesive substance, or otherwise attached. D D are notched wheels or ratchets by which the wick is raised or depressed in the tube.
When the ratchets are turned their teeth are embedded in the paper, givinga firm hold and leaving indentations in the paper which the teeth of the ratchets follow when the wick is raised and depressed repeatedly, bringing up the wick level, as previously trimmed, and
(N0 model.)
thereby keeping the wick from being uneven after being moved by the ratchets.
- I am aware that a fibrous wick has been inclosed in a paper envelope; but in such construction no sizing was used whereby to stiffen the paper and firmly secure it to the wick. Such a device I do not claim.
In my device the paper is strengthened and closely held to the fibrous material in such manner that the ratchet-teeth of the wickraiser have a secure hold in raising or lowerin g the wick. This is particularly importantin the wide wicks used in stove-lamps, which are frequently elevated in an irregular or uneven manner, making it difficult to properly trim the same.
What 1 claim is A woven wick havingclosely attached upon one side a paper strip, whereby a firm holdfor the ratchet-teeth is afforded, substantially as shown and. described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: I. G. OHANDLEE.
