PATENT OFFICE.
BO LT-CUTTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,299, dated August 17, 1880.
(Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM FISHER, of Perrysburg, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bolt-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved cutter with one side broken away, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the device.
This invention has relation to improvements in bolt-cutters especially designed for trimming carriage-bolts; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts of the cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings the letter A designates theframe of my improved bolt-cutter, consisting, essentially, of two strong U -shaped sides, a, connected each at the ends of its branches by means of the cross-piece b, (shown in one piece with the sides.) Between the side pieces of this frame are pivoted, by means of a rivet, c, the curved cutting-jaws B, having each a bit, d, extending up between the cr0ss-pieces b, and guided in their movements toward and from each other thereby. These bits have the usual beveled cutting-edges, and are maintained apart for the introduction of the bolt between them by means of the U-shaped inetallic spring S, the rabbeted ends e of which extend up between the cross-pieces b, and thus serve to guide the spring during its contraction and expansion.
GU indicate levers extending in between the side pieces of the frame and fulcrumed by their extremities at the angles which the said cross-pieces bmake with the U -shaped portions of the frame. These levers have cam-shaped ends f, that bear against the upper ends of the jaws or arms that carry the bits or cutters, and when their power ends are brought together the said bits are forcibly approximated and brought in contact, effectually severing a bolt inserted between them.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hand bolt-cutter, the combination, with the U-shaped frame composed of the parallel side pieces, a, and cross-pieces b, of the jaws B, pivoted between the said side pieces and having bits extending up between said cross pieces, the U-shaped separating-spring S, between said jaws, and the levers U C, having cam-shaped endsf bearing against the jaws, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABRAM FISHER.
