i I Inventor I iazlfeeizjparz,
. A ttorney Patented Feb. 2, 1943 UNlTED s1" TES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
, The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in repair bottoms for sinks or tubs and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which isadapted to be eXpeditiously installed when the original bottom of the sink or tub becomes unfit for further use, thus materially prolonging the period of usefulness of the fixture.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a repair bottom of the aforementioned character for sinks and tubs which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong; durable, reliable in use and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through a portion of a sink equipped with a repair bottom constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 4 is a view in end elevation thereof.
Figure 5 is a detail view in elevation of the strainer.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the resilient gasket.
Referring now to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a plate of suitable metal. The plate I is shaped to conform to the lower portion of a conventional sink 2 in which said plate is to be mounted.
The plate I has stamped therein a tapered opening 3 for registry with the usual drain opening 4 in the bottom 5 of the sink 2. A coating of porcelain is to be provided on the upper surface of the plate I.
Mounted on the edges of the plate I is a resilient rubber gasket 6. The gasket 6 is of circular cross-section and has formed therein a groove or channel M for the reception of the marginal portions of the plate I. As shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings, the resilient gasket 6 seals the joint between the plate I and the inclined walls of the sink 2.
A layer of waterproof cement or other material 1 is provided between the plate I and the bottom 5 of the sink 2. thickness.
The openings 3 and 4 accommodate an externally threaded strainer 8 which depends from the bottom 5 of the sink 2. The strainer 8 includes a conical upper portion 9 which seats in the correspondingly shaped openings 3 and 4.
A rubber gasket l0 on the strainer 8 is engaged beneath the bottom 5 of the sink 2. A securing nut H is threaded on the strainer 8. A metal washer I2 is provided between the nut I l and the rubber gasket I8. Reference numeral 13 designates a conventional waste trap which is connected to the strainer 8 in the usual manner.
It will thus be seen that a sink or tub repair bottom has been provided which may be expeditiously installed without the necessity of making material structural alterations in the fixture. The construction and arrangement is such as to positively prevent leakage. When the nut II is tightened the strainer 8 pulls the plate I down tightly in the lower portion of the sink 2, thereby uniformly spreading the Waterproof cement or other material I.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sink or tub repair'bottom constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. A repair bottom of the character described comprising a plate engageable in the lower portion of a sink or tub and conforming to the shape thereof, a gasket mounted on and enclosing the edges of the plate for sealing the joint between said plate and the sink or tub, said gasket being of circular cross-section and having a groove therein for the reception of the marginal portions of said plate, and means for securing the plate in position.
2. A repair bottom of the character described comprising a metallic plate engageable in the lower portion of a sink and conforming to the shape thereof, a layer of Waterproof material between the plate and the bottom of the sink, and a resilient gasket of circular cross-section mounted on and enclosing the edges of the plate for sealing the joint between said plate and the walls of the sink, said gasket having a groove therein for the reception of the marginal portions of said plate.
This layer may be of any desired 3. A repair bottom of the character described comprising a metallic plate engageable in the lower portion of a sink and conforming to the shape thereof, said plate having an opening therein for registry with an opening in the sink bottom, a layer of Waterproof cement between the plate and the sink bottom, a resilient gasket enclosing the marginal edges of the plate and engaged with the walls of the sink for sealing the joint between said plate and said walls, a strainer depending from the bottom of the sink and including a conical portion seated in the openings, and a securing nut for the plate threaded on the strainer beneath the bottom of the sink.
4. The combination with a sink including a bottom having a conical waste opening therein, of a metallic plate engageable in the lower portion of the sink and conforming to the shape thereof, said plate having a conical opening therein aligned with the first-named opening, a layer of Waterproof material between the plate and the sink bottom, a resilient gasket on the edges of the plate for sealing the joint between said plate and the Walls of the sink, a strainer including a conical portion seated in the openings, a securing nut threaded on said strainer beneath the bottom of the sink, and a sealing element mounted on the strainer between the nut and the sink bottom.
