FLEMING CONVERTIBLE DRAIN FITTING Filed July 31, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I 1710/4 n/A'. f F/ /lf y Patented June 24, 1930 PATENT OFFICE WELLS S. FLEMING, OF PORTLAND, OREGON CONVERTIBLE DRAIN FITTING Application filed July 31,
The object of this invention is to provide a convertible drain suitable for use as a floor drain, especially suitable for shower baths; also suitable for use as a roof drain. Furthermore to provide a drain fitting of simple,
practical, and relatively inexpensive construction adapted to be set in floors of plastic composition of various thicknesses; and in connection with which a sheet of water proofing material may be used to provide a watertight condition; and to this end to use devices that are accessible after the floor is laid, so
that repairs may be made without injury to the floor.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a floor drain in connection with which a testing sheet or gasket may be employed for temporarily closing the opening leading to the connected drain pipes of the building; so that the plumbing may be tested under pressure if required by the building code of the locality.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a drain fitting which is readily convertible from the usual floor drain type having a grille plate opening laid flush in the floor, to a drain having a dome-plate fixedly secured at the floor level and extending upwardly with slotted openings of a type suitable for roof drains, or in floors of factories.
Other features and advantages of my invention, and the details of construction and arrangement of my invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a vertical section of a floor with a drain embodying my invention set therein;
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation, broken away in part, of the several parts comprising my invention as shown in Fig. 1, with the parts vertically lifted and separated from each other, but positioned for assembly;
Fig. 3 shows a plan view of a testing plate or gasket which may be employed with my invention;
Fig. 4 shows a vertical section of a modified 5 type of my invention; as here shown a dome 1928. Serial No. 296,451.
drain plate is employed instead of a grille plate;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the said modified type of my invention shown in Fig. 4 with parts broken away with the parts vertically separated from each other but arranged for assembly;
Fig. 6 is a plan view partly broken away of the type of my invention shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3 inclusive; and
Fig. 7 is a similar plan view of my invention modified as shown by Figs. 4 and 5.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, my invention comprises a tubular body 1, of which the bore 2 is provided with an interior thread 65 3 with which the end of a drain pipe, not shown, may be connected. The upper end of the body is provided with an upwardly inclined circumferential lateral flange 5, the upper surface of which is formed with a conical depression 6, and terminates at its outer periphery in a horizontally disposed,portion 7. Radially arranged internally threaded bolt recesses 8 are provided in the flange concentric with its bore.
A clamping plate 10 is provided, adapted to be seated on the flange 5, in the said conical depression 6, and has a central opening 12 registering with the bore 2 of the body 1. Bosses 13 are formed on the clamping plate 10 in which holes 15 are provided registering with the bolt recesses 8, and bolts 17 are provided, adapted to be inserted through the holes 15 and threaded into the bolt recesses 8, by which the clamping plate is secured on the body 1.
The outer margin of the plate 10 has an integral circumferential wall 18 forming a circular chamber 20. The wall 18 converges slightly towards the top and screw threads 21 are provided on the interior surface of the said wall 18 and spaced, radial openings 22 are provided adjacent its base opening into the chamber 20.
A cylindrical drain section 23 having a bore 26 is provided threaded as at 25, on its exterior surface and adapted to be threaded into the chamber 20. The upper end of said drain section 23 is off-set as at 27, forming an interior shoulder 28 on which a. strainer plate is adapted to be seated, formed with slotted openings 81 to permit drainage into the body 1.
In i my improved convertible in a buildin the bod 1 is set upon the su -floor 35, see ig. 1, an a water proof sheet 36 of sheet lead or other suitable waterroofing material, provided with, a circular ole is fitted symmetrically over the ggnlical depression 6 of the flange 5 of the A circular testing gasket 37 of thin sheet lead or other easily rupturable material is then placed over the body 1, provided with circumferential slots 38 adapted to register with the bolt recesses 8. If other material, such as roofing paper is used, the slots 38 need not be rovided, the bolts 17 merely being forced t rough it.
The clampin plate 10 is then laid over the flange 5 of the 0d and screwed down firmly thereon by the b0 ts 17 to secure the water proofing material 36, and the testing gasket 37 in water tight relation. The drain section 23 is then mounted on the clamping plate 10.
The floor of lastic composition or other suitable material 18 then laid. The outer surface of the wall 18 is'preferably wrapped with a strip of fabric, not shown, to cover the o nings 22, and thus to protect these from '0 material getting therein, but ofiering no barrier to the percolation of water therethrough. The grille late 31 may then be set in position to comp etc the installation of the drain. The testing-gasket 37 also serves the purpose of preventing the entrance of dirt, concrete, or other clog 'ng waste material into the drain pipes uring the construction period of the building, and further serves the desirable purpose of permitting the drain pipe to be tested for leaks, as reuired in building codes of most cities. pon such test being completed, and the plumbin being put to use, the central portion of e testing gasket ma a cugting it away around the interior of the Referrin now to Fi s. 4, 5 and 7, illustrating a m ed form 0 my present invention: the body 1 is constructed similarly to that part of my drain fitting above described. A clamping plate 41 is formed similarly to the equivalent clamping plate 10, exoeptm that the vertically disposed wall 18 of the atter is omitted. A drain section 42 is formed with a lateral circumferential flange 43,
' which is adapted to-be seated on the clamping plate 41 the flange 43 be' provided with bolt holes 45 to receive the Its 17.
Said drain section 42 extends upwardly in a bee-hive dome 46 formed with slots 47 in its side wall for drainage, and the rpendicular walls of the dome 46 exten belowrthe flange 43, as at 48 and are provided with probe removed longations of the slots 47. This modified form of my invention is particularly suitable for roof drains, or for floor drains in factories, packing houses, and the like where considerable quantities of refuse material maly be accumulated about the drains.
