STOVE-PIPE THIMBLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,923, dated August 10, 1880.

Application filed February 3, 1880.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GooK, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvemcut Combining a Stove-Pipe Thimble, Collar, and Flue-Cover, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and letters ot" reference marked thereon,

The object of my invention is to provide the stove-pipe receptacle of chimneys with a thimble, pipe-collar, and iiuecover, all combined 2o and permanently attached to a chimney, so arranged that it can be either converted into a collar While the pipe is in use, or will form a complete and ornamental cover for the orifice when the pipe is removed, thereby dispensing 2 5 with theditlerent pieces ordinarily used and the necessary inconvenience attending their use.

I will now describe the construction and operation of myinvention as herein presented, where the device is calculated to tit either a 3o tive or six inch pipe, and will hereinafter mention a slight modication which may be made Where the use ot' but one size pipe only is determined upon.

The device is constructed of sheet-iron or other metallic substance. Forming the base, upon which I attach my invention, is the dan ge a, projecting about one and three-quarters (l) inch from the thimble g. (Shown in section,

The inner circle ofthe flange and t-himble may vary according to the size of the pipe to be used. Fig. 3 represents a circle of six (6) inches in diameter.

Upon the face of the lian ge a., I place eleven, (11,) more or less, of the narrowing curved plates b, on the convex edge of each of which is the raised flange c. The plates are all hinged to the flange a by means ot' the rivets d passing through the widest end ot the plates, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and et.

W'hen the tine-cover is formed, as shown in Fig. l, the small aperture j' is left in the ceuter, for the introduction ot' a persons finger to separate the joints and renderit convenient to open the cover. the cap e being provided and hinged to one of the plates to cover the aperture, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The narrow ends ot' these plates being convex on one edge, and a corresponding concavity being on the other edge, it Will readily be seen 6o that by turning these ends all to the center of the circle formed by the flange et joints are formed covered by the flange c, and thereby the desired tine-cover is produced, as shown in Fig. 1. Now as the cover is formed by turning the plates outward again, letting one lap upon another, until the concave edges project one-l1alt`() inch from the inner edge of the ange, We then have a good encirclingjoint for a five (5) inch pipe, at the same time 7o an ornamental collar is formed around the pipe, as shown in Fig. 2. Again, by placing all the plates directly over the body of the tlange, we have an opening for a six (6) inch pipe formed by the thimble, and still an ornamental collar, as shown in Fig. 3.

As alluded to in the foregoing, Where one size pipe only is likely to be used the thimble and inner edge of the collar \vill form the necessary oritce, so that the joints formed by the 8o plates may radiate from the center ot' the cover in directv lines, instead of curves, as herein represented.
