Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMASF. SGANLAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MUSIC-DESK FOR ORGANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,897, dated August 10, 1880.
Application filed December 11, 18751.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. SOANLAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Music-Desks for Organs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in combining with a musical instrument, such as an organ or upright piano, a music -receptacle at the place usually occupied by the music-rest, and in so constructing this receptacle that its front may constitute both the device for holding the music behind it when the same is packed away and also a music-rest to hold the music while in use, which may be brought forward over the keys to any desired extent, so as to suit the convenience of the player.
I am aware that movable musicrests in connection with pianos and organs have been used before, as shown in the patent to McOammen, 1879, and in the Ohickering piano; but in this case the movement of the rest is not for adjustment to suit the eyes of the player, but simply a shutting up or pushing out of the way when not in use.
The distinction that I make for mine is that it is made especially for, and is the only one that can be used, to bring the music forward of the inner ends of the keys.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is cross vertical section of the same, also showing the rear end of the receptacle in elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan of a part of the same, to show the device for allowing the adjustment of the rest. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the slide,to show its construction and arrangement.
In the drawings, let AB represent the body of the organ or other musical instrument to which my invention is to be applied.
0 G, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, form the ends of the receptacle for the folios, A forming the back and D the front. The parts A, (J, and G, as well as the base B, are stationary, but the front or music-rest D can be moved back and forth. To accomplish this movement I attach to the back of the piece D a metallic bar, E E, bent as shown in Fig. 2. The horizontal part E of this bar slides on the base B,andis held in position by clips H H, Figs. 2, 3, and 4:.
The end of the bar E has bosses e e, to prevent it from being pulled outfrom beyond the clips.
I do not confine myself to this particular construction, as this sliding arrangement may be varied in a great many ways.
Having thus described my invention, What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a musical instrument, the musicreceptacle consisting of the side 0 (l and the sliding front and musicrest D.
2. In combination with a musical instrument, the rest D and guiding-bar E, whereby the music may be brought forward over the keys to suit the convenience of the player, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS F. SGANLAN.
