PIANO CASE.

SARAH WOOD CLARK, OF NEW? YORK, N. Y.
PIANO-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed April 14, 1914. Serial No. 831,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH 00D CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in piano cases, and it relates particularly to instruments equipped with my improvements in sounding boards in accordance with my Letters Patent of the United States, No. 753,157, dated June 21, 1904.
This invention consists in a sounding board supplemental to those shown in my said Letters Patent and serving to direct the musical sounds produced by the instrument.
In the drawing, 1, is a side view partly in section, of a piano case embodying my invention. This piano case isprovided with a sounding board, 2, behind which is a sound chamber, 3, and behind this is an auxiiiary sounding board, at, curved vertically.
The top of the case of this instrument is provided with a cover, 5, hinged at the rear. This cover is concaved beneath as shown at (i, to deflect the sound waves in a forward direction when supported in the raised position shown in the drawing. It will be observed that upon being raised from a horizontal position to such raised position, this cover, 5, is carried somewhat to the rear so that it no longer overhangs the front part of the instrument frame.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing I have found that the volume of sound projected forwardly may be materially increased by extending this cover at its forward edge. Accordingly, I have supplied this cover with an extension, 7, hinged or pivoted thereto, at 8, so as to be able to be supported in its raised position, in which position it forms a forward extension of the said cover, 5, and it may be dropped into a vertical position when the cover is lowered so as to rest against or near the front of the piano case as shown in dotted lines in the drawing and fornnng an embellishment to the instrument case.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An upright piano or like instrument provided with main and supplemental sounding boards, and a casing provided with a cover hinged thereto, for deflecting the sound toward the front, said cover being furnished with a supplemental portion hinged along the front edge thereof and when lowered extending down before the upright front portion of the casing.
Signed at Lakewood in the county of @cean and State of New Jersey this 9th day of April A. D. 1914.
