(Cl. 235--59) -I'hey had however the disadvantage that their whole construction was more or less complicated, since for the'withdrawal of the values, members were provided other than those for the registration of the values. The devices for this reason were expensive in construction and their operation was unreliable.
According to the invention these disadvantages are now obviated by providing universal members which are inserted between the total taking mechanism and the total keys and which effect the total sign printing operations.
In the drawings one example of construction of the subject of the invention is illustrated as applied to a Mercedes Addelektra typewriting calculating machine.

The machine housing Fig. 1, carries by means of rails 2 and 3 the paper carriage 4, in which a platen 5 is arranged. To the front side of the paper carriage, there is fixed a supporting rail 1, for carrying the column totalizers T. Crosstotalizers QI, Q2 are also movable under control of the carriage.
On the left-hand side of the machine is arranged the total key 226a indicated by TV (Fig. 4) for taking the total of the column totalizers T. The ke`y 226a is attached to the key lever 226 which is swingably mounted on the shaft 68. The nose 226?) of the key lever 226 is capable of co-acting with the nose ||0g of the part H0. The rearwardly projecting arm 226d of the key lever 226, is capable of acting with its face 226e on the face 221 of an arm 228 of a two-armed lever 229. ably mounted by means of a headed screw 230 on a supporting member 232, which is mounted by means of screws 23|, in suitablemanner on the machine housing. To the free rearwardly directed arm 233, of the two-armedl lever 229, a draw-bar 235, is jointed by means `of a screw 234, which draw-bar is provided with an elongated hole 236, in its free upwardly directed end. Through this hole a screw 231 projects, which is screwed into a lever 238, fixed on the shaft |92, whereby the draw-bar 235 is held loosely in connection with the lever 238. The draw-bar 235, is connected, in the manner illustrated in Figure 4, with a three-armed lever` 239, which is swingably mounted in a suitable manner at 239:1: on the rear wall of the calculating casing |26,

a spring 240 engages, which at its other end is connected to a pin, not shown, which may be mounted in the calculating mechanism framework. In consequence of the action ofthe spring, 240, the draw-bar 235 is acted on in the direction 'of the arrow b, whereby its normal position is determined by striking of the key lever 226 against a stop 226s arranged on the machine housing.
On the free end of the arm 239e (Figure 4) of the three-armed lever 239, there is arranged a. nose 26|, which is capable of acting on a lever 263, swingable on Athe pivot 262. Normally, the lever 263, under the pull of its spring 264, tends to move upwardly so that its-part 265, lies against By means of the pin 266, a coupling' pawl 261 is mounted on the lever 263, and this pawl is so acted upon by the spring 26B, that its lug 269, rests against a nose 210, of the lever 263. The nose 21| of the coupling pawl 261, lies normally below a bent-off lug 212, of a draw-hook or coupler 215 jointed to the intermediate lever 213, by a pin 214, the draw-hook 215, being acted on in the anti-clockwise direction round the pin 214, by means of a spring 218 which, on the one hand, is connected to a pin 216 and, on the other hand. engages with the nose 211, cf the draw-hook, whereby the normal position of the draw-hook 215, is determined by its edge 219, striking 'upwards against a pin 280, mounted in the machine housing. On the draw hook 215, a member 28|, is rotatably mounted on the pin 282. The meniber 28|, is slotted downwards to the dotted line 283 to straddle the draw-hook 215, for the purpose of obtaining a good fit. The member 2li?. further, is provided with two teeth 285, 286 the spacing of which is Smaller than the pitch of initeeth of the shaft N. The intermediate lever 213, is swingably mounted on a shaft 281, and is connected by means of a pin 288, with a type lever, 288a rotatably mounted on the type lever shaft 55, and carrying the total sign type.
On the right-hand side of the machine, the key 329, for taking totals of the cross totalizers Qi and Q2, is arranged. The key 329, is attached to the key lever 330, Fig. 5, swing/ably mounted on the shaft 68. The rearwardly directed part 33i of the key lever 330 engages an arched face 332, of a slide 331, vertically guided by means of the screw- slot connections 333, 333 and 335, 336, arranged in suitable manner on the righthand side of the machine and the front wall of the housing. With the projection 331a, engages a spring 338, which, on the other hand, is connected at its free end to a pin 339, Fig. 5.
To the bar 331 (Figure 5) there is iixed a part 385, by means of the screw 386, and the lug 381 of the part 385 embraces the rod 331. The part 385 has an elongated hole 388, which permits of adjustment of the part 385, in the vertical direction in relation to the rod 331. The part 385 has its downwardly-directed end of fork shape. With the fork-shaped part 389 engages a pin 390 of a lever 263x, swingably mounted on the shaft 262x. Since the sign printing mechanism associated with lever 263x for the total-taking of the cross totalizers QI and Q2 is similar to that shown in Fig. 4 for the total-taking for the column totalizer T, it shall not be further described here, but in Figure 5, the corresponding parts may be readily distinguished, as they are provided with the same references with the addition of the symbol I.
Preparatory to taking a total from the first cross totalizer QI, the tabulating mechanism is operated to position the carriage where the cross totalizer wheel showing the rst significant iigure will be opposite the master wheel |89, Fig. 1. Then the total-taking key or control 329, 338 is depressed and becomes latched, and, therefore,
set in depressed position, by means of the latch ling, Fig. 4, as described in my copending application Serial No. 53,805, iiled December l0, 1935, now Patent No. 2,186,642, dated January 9, 1940, which also describes the automatic operation of the machine to clear the cross totalizer and print the total digit-by-digit consequently to the setting of said control 329, 330. This setting of the control 329, 330 moves slide 331 upwardly and stretches spring 338.
Further, in the upward movement of the slide 331 (Figure 5) the part 385 has been carried upward along with it. This releases the pin 390 of the lever 263x so that this lever follows, under the action of its spring 264x, the part 385 in its upward movement whereby the coupling pawl 261:1: jointed to the lever 263x moves upwardly to place its nose 211x over the nose 212x of the draw lever 2152:.
It results from the setting of the total key 329, 330 that the machine proceeds automatically to clear the totalizer and print the total digitbydigit, as described in my said Patent No. 2,186,642, which also describes how, under control of the carriage control mechanism represented in Fig. 2, the total-taking control 329, 33D is released from the latch Iig and restored.

The coupling pawl 261x, which is mounted on the key lever 263x, and which on the depression of the key 329, snaps over the nose 212x of the coupler 215x, hereby takes the coupler 215x, along with it and swings it against the action of the spring 218x, in the clockwise direction, whereby the coupler dog 28|r, engages with the continually rotating cam shaft N. The coupler 2151: is hereby taken along with the continually rotating shaft N, and thus swings the intermediate lever 213.1: in the clockwise direction round its pivot 281x. Consequently, the type lever 288m: is swung round its pivot 55x, whereby the total sign is printed on the paper after the printed total. Hereupon, the mechanisms 213x, 213:, 288az: associated with the printing of the total sign return into their rest position illustrated in Figure 5.
The mechanism and procedure just described are also employed for clearing the second cross totalizer Q2 and printing its total and the total sign.
Now, let it be assumed that at the end of the week or at the end of the month, the amounts registered in the column totalizers Tl to T8 are to be written out. To this end, the carriage return key is first depressed, whereby the paper carriage moves into its extreme right-hand position. Then, by means of the tabular key, the carriage is moved to the left, until the first signiiicant figure place of the column totalizer Ti is located inthe working position. 'I'he cross totalizers QI and Q2 are held by a locking lever, not shown, in their left-hand position and are thereby prevented from participating in the movement of the column totalizers.
Now the total-taking control key lever 226, Fig. 4, is depressed and becomes latched by the latch |I0g.
On the depression of the key lever 226 (Figure 4) the face 226e, acts on the face 221 of the lever 223, and swings the same in the anti-clockwise direction, whereby the rod 235 is moved downwards in the direction of the arrow a against the action of the spring 280, whichy engages with the Since the lever 233 is inl connection with the rod 235, it is swung round its axis 2391: in the anti-clockwise direction.
In the swinging movement of the lever 239 in the anti-clockwise direction, the lever 263, under the action of the spring 264, can also swing in the anti-clockwise direction, whereby the nose 21|, of the coupling pawl 261, mounted on the lever 263, moves upwardly so that it rests over the nose 212 of the draw-lever or coupler 215.
Consequently to depressing and latching the total-taking control lever 226, the machine proceeds automatically, in the same manner as above described for the cross totalizers, to clear the column totalizer and print the total digit-bydigit. Following the printing of the last total digit, the key 226 is released under control of the carriage controlled mechanism of Fig. 2. Upon such release of the lever 226, the slide 235 is moved upwardly and the lever 239 is turned clockwise under the action of spring 230. The attendant clockwise turning of lever 229 restores the total key lever 226 counterclockwise to normal position against stop 226s. In its clockwise movement, the lever 239 acts on and swings the lever 263 downwardly against the action of spring ing cycle.
264. By this downward movement of lever 263, its pawl 261 pulls the coupler 215 into engagement with the shaft or drive N for resulting operation of'the clear sign printer 213, 2280r to print a total-sign after the total printed from the column totalizer.
Referring to the mechanism represented in Fig. 6, the latch H0 becomes moved and locked by arm |20 and also interlocked with the total key lever 226, or 329, Figures 4 and 5, to keep said key lever depressed. The arm |20 is withdrawn at each digit printing cycle without, however, the latch H0 being permitted to move to release the total key lever. This condition is controlled by the nose 81d" of the lever 81d, Fig.
2, being interposed behind the spur 98 of thev lock bar 98 until the last digit is printed, and the attending letter-feed step of the carriage brings the gap 81t over the nose 81s. Thereupon, the Fig. 2 train is moved by spring 8110 to retract nose 81d" for resulting movement of bar 98 and retraction of latch H0 and restoration of the total key lever, in the ilnal total digit-print- This operation for control of release of the total key lever 226, or 329, is more fully described in my aforesaid Patent No. 2,186,642; the present description being suiicient to indicate that the total-taking control or key lever 226, or 329, is initially settable and later restorable consonantly. with initiating and ending an operation of the total printing mechanism.
What is claimed is:
l. In a typeWriting-calculating machine having a totalizer and mechanism operable to print a total digit-,by-digit from said totalizer, the
combination with a total-taking control settable to an operated position and automatically restorable from said position in respect to initiating tion to the lever for initially moving the lever, another spring having connection to the lever for operating the lever, and an operative connection from the control to the lever, said springs and operative connection being correlated to effect the initial movement and subsequent operation of said lever consonantly, respectively, with the setting and restoration of said control.
2. In a typewriting-calculating machine having a totalizer and mechanism operable to print a total digit-by-digit from said totalizer; the combination with a total-taking control settable to an operated position and automatically restorable from said position in respect to initiating and later ending a total-printing operation of said mechanism, of a sign printer, a power drive, a device initially conditionable, and operable, when conditioned, to effect an operation of said sign printer by said power drive, and means operatively associating said device and control so that the initial conditioning lof said device and the operation of said device are eiecte'd consonantly, respectively, with the setting and restoration of said control, whereby to print a sign after the printed total.
3. In a typewriting-calcuiating machine having a totalizer and mechanism operable to print a total digit-by-digit from said totalizer; the combination with a total-taking control settable to an operated position and automatically restorable from said position in respect to initiating and later ending a total printing operation of said mechanism, of a sign printer, a power drive, a coupler associated with the sign printer and operable to connect said printer and drive,
and means, including a pawl device, operatively associating said control and coupler, said means being conditioned initially consonantly with the setting of said control and, when conditioned, being operable consonantly with the restoration of said control to operate said coupler to connect said printer and drive for resulting printer operation to print a sign after the printed total as the control is'restored.
