SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,800, dated August 3, 1880,
Application filed January 10, 1880.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENIS MINOGUE, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Snap- Hook, of which the following a specification.
Figure 1 is a view of the snap-hook and ring in perspective. ofthe same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, of a portion of the snap-hook.

The object of this invention is to provide a snap-hook in which the ring can be readily engaged and from which it can be as readily disengaged when desired, but not accidentally.
The invention consists lll asnaphook whose guard is a curved block arranged under the end of the spring and provided with a short upwardly-proiecting shank, grooves, and socket, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the hook of the snap, formed in the usual manner. B is the spring attached to the shank of the hook by the pins or rivets a a.
O is the guard attached to the lower end of the spring by the pins or rivets I) I), or it may be constructed in one piece with the spring. This guard 0 consists of a semicircular block of metal having a short npward-projceting shank, c, by which it is attached to the lower end of the spring B. In the curved 1.)eriphery of this guard O is formed a deep vertical rectangular groove, (1, which forms in effect two semicircular flanges on this rear part of the guard, while in the perpendicular face of the guard 0, near its lower end, is formed a deep semicircular socket, y, from the upper edge of which, and nearly to the shank 0 of the guard, extends a rectangular groove, f, which forms Fig. 2 is a side elevation in effect two side flanges on the face of the guard. The guard 0, thus formed and fixed on the end of the spring 13, fits in the bend of the hook A with its semicircular flanges projecting on either side of the shank of said hook A, and its front flanges on either side of the point of the hook A, and thus in effect fills the bend of the hook.
, hen the ring D is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 itis securely held between the socket g of the guard G and the bend of the hook A, and should the ring D he accidentally turned backward and pressed upon the spring B it is found that the projecting points of the said front flanges of the guard O engage against the inner curve of the said ring D in such a manner as to prevent the said ringD from becoming accidentally disengaged, though by proper]y-applied pressure of the hand upon the spring B the disengagement of the ring D can be effected at once.
I am aware that it is not new to use a beveledged swing-tongue that enters a groove in the beak of hook, or a grooved tongue to overlap and form supports against the sides of the body, or to slot the end of the tongue to receive the beak.
Having thusdescribed myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A snap-hook provided with a guard that consists of a curved block, 0, having a short upwardly-prejecting shank, c, grooves (If, and semicircular end socket, g, said guard being attached under the end of the spring B, as shown and described.
