l atentecl Jan. 19 43 Application April 12, 1940, Serial No. 329,370 In Sweden April 1, 1939 8 Claims.
This invention relates to a refuse collecting container and particularly to means for feeding refuse or the like into the container and for compressing the same.
In the specification of my copending application Serial No. 112,593 filed November 24, 1936, now Patent No. 2,223,690 granted December 3, 1940, is disclosed a refuse collecting container, preferably arranged as a vehicle, which is provided with a conveyor screw rotatable in a casing for feeding the refuse into the container. By means of this feeding device it is possible, in most cases, to compress the refuse to a high degree in the container, particularly in case of feeding large-sized or sufficiently coherent refuse material. In some other cases, however, especially when feeding fine-sized refuse material, such as ash, sand or gravel, the screw has not been able to exert a sufficient pressure when feeding the refuse into the container, and it is an object of the invention to improve the pressure action of the screw. 4
In the following such expressions as forward and rearmost refer to the feeding direction of the screw and not to the driving direction in case the container is made as a vehicle.
At the rearmost end of the screw in the known construction a layer of the fine-sized refuse material has gathered between the screw and the casing to which it adheres, and it has not been possible to stir it up. This refuse has impeded the charging when the dust bins are emptied, and the pressing action from this rear portion'of the screw was reduced. At the forward end of the screw it has turned out when the end of the screw surface forces the refuse under heavy pressure into the container through a part, for instance the right half, of the end opening of the casing that some of the refuse will pass back again through the left half of the opening. In both cases the draw-backs mentioned are found to depend upon the fact that the space between the screw and the casing has been too great. An improvement in said respect would apparently be obtained by increasing the diameter of the whole screw, but thereby larger objects among the refuse might be jammed between the screw and the casing in the vicinity of the fore border of the charge opening. It is further unsuitable to keep different vehicles for different kinds of refuse or the like.
By the present invention such draw-backs as described are removed and efficient compression will be attainable also when collecting fine-sized refuse, if the space between the casing and the periphery of the screw at least along a part of the circumference of the casing is less at one end or both ends of the screw surface than opposite the fore part of a charge opening in the casing. At the rear end the distance between the screw and the casing is suitably less than mm. and
may preferably be 10-15 mm., whereas at the forwardportion of the-charge opening the distance may be mm. or more. Hereby it will be possible for the screwto convey also the finesized refuse or material and to keep clean the whole rear end Wall of the casing without the risk of jamming larger objects. By this arrangement the feeding pressure will increase. If thus the screw is of varying diameter the pressure is obtained from a number of coaxial zones. Along the rear portion of the screw the minimum dis tance between the screw and the casing may be approximately constant and thereafter increase in the conveying direction to a likewise constant though greaterdistance. The space may also increase continuously, for instance by the radius of the screw decreasing continuously, at least adjacent the charge opening, or the curve radius of the casing may increase continuously. At the forward portion of the screw surface the minimum distance between the casing, including portions projecting inwardly therefrom, and the screw may be less along one or more parts of the circumference of the casing than along the rest of the circumference, and also less than the minimum distance between the fore border of the charge opening and the screw. This may be attained thereby that the radius of curvature of the casing is greater at one side of the screw than at'the opposite side, or inside the casing one or more bands, flanges or the like may be mounted extending at an angle to the axis of the screw, for instance like a screw-line in adirection op posite to the screw surface of the conveying screw. p
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a refuse vehicle having a feeding device accord ing to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectionthrough the screw according to section line II-II in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a plate to be formed into'a screw blade.
Fig. 4 is a similar plan view referringto another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 5 is an end view'of a further embodiment, seen from the forward end of the screw.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through the axis of the screw.
Fig. 7 is a similar end view and 7 Fig. 8 is a side view of yet another embodiment.
A collecting container I, mounted on a motor car chassis, has a trough-shaped depression 2 sloping rearwardly towards the container end wall 3. In this wall is mounted an emptying device 6 for dustless emptying of refuse from the dust bin 4 from which the refuse drops into a substantially cylindrical casing through a charge opening 8 in the casing. In the casing is located a rotary conveyor screw having a shaft 9 and screw-blade ID. The screw is journalled at H and I2 and is driven from the motor over a gear wheel I3, whereas the fore end of the screw is cantilever mounted. For emptying the container I the end wall 3 together with the whole of the screw device is to be swung out and upwardly. The casing I preferably extends somewhat more forwardly than the screw surface. The rear portion 10! of the screw blade is wider than its fore portion m2, and the space between portion IGI and the casing is suitably as short as is practically possible, for instance 10 mm, whereas the space between the screw and the fore border of the opening 8 is essentially greater, for instance 100 mm. The portion I03 between the wider and the narrower portions of the screw blade is preferably located opposite to or somewhat behind the middle of the opening 8.
A similar effect can also be obtained if the screw for a part or the whole of its length is made narrowing conically, for instance by using the plane screw blade shape shown in Fig. 4, or by altering the angle between the screw generatrix and the axis of the screw so that the space between screw and easing alters in the manner as indicated.
According to Figs. 5 and 6 the forward portion of the casing is so formed that one half H has a constant radius of curvature, whereas the other half 72 has an increased radius in order to thereby reduce the space. In the embodiment according to Figs. 7 and 8 a band or rail M is mounted in the fore portion of the casing l in the form of a screw extending in a direction opposite to the blade ID of the conveying screw, but a number of such bands may also be used round the circumference of the casing. By means of these bands the refuse will be screwed into the container under an increased pressure, and simultaneously the possibility for the refuse of reentering the casing, laterally of the forward end of the screw blade, will be reduced. Such re-entrance may also be counteracted by bending the mouth portion of the casing somewhat inwardly all round or at least on one side of thescrew, or by mounting within the casing near to its discharge opening a flange or the like projecting obliquely inwardly and towards the discharge opening and located substantially in a plane at right angles to the axis of the screw.
