Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
HENRY OLIVER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BROOCH, EAR-RING, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,042, dated February 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY OLIVER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andvuseful Improvements in Photographic or Sun Pictures; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front View of a brooch and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 a front view of a modification of Fig. l and F ig. 4 a vertical section of Fiv'. 3.
rhe letters of reference indicate the same parts in the different figures.
Hy invention relates to the production of permanent photographic or sun pictures upon concave surfaces of glass by causing the picture to be taken on a collodion film or its equivalent on the inner or concave surface of glass, and then to be coated or backed with suitable cement for the purpose of producing a new article of ornamental manufacture viz., brooches, buckles, etc.
The following is a description of the application of my invention in the manufacture of imitation jet brooches.
Figs. l and 2 represent a circular brooch, composed of a watch crystal a upon the inner or concave surface of which a photographic image is fixed by any convenient process, the crystal being held in the camera during the operation, in a glass frame or holder. When the picture is finished the concavity is filled with cement b, composed of gum shellac7 resin and coal tar, in the proportions of siX parts by Weight of resin; one of coal tar and one of gum shellac; in which the pin o is secured. Figs. 3 and trepresent an ellipsoidal brooch manufactured in a similar manner.
My improvement is applicable to a great variety of ornamental purposes such as earrings, covers of snuff-boxes, porteinonnaies, etc.
A peculiar and beautiful effect is pro duced by placing a photographic picture upon the concave surface and the appearance of the finest enamel painting is readily imitated. The iigures show up in relief, which is not the case when the picture is upon a flat surface.
I am aware that sun pictures have been produced upon the inner surfaces of planes of transparent material and that temporary concave fields have been suggested to overcome the spherical aberration of the lenses in the production of pictures having a plane surface; but
What I claim as my invention is Photographic or sun pictures upon concave surfaces of glass and backing it up with cement in the manner and for the purpose substantially as above specified.
HENRY OLIVER.
Vitnesses J. GWINN CHILD, J. H. B. JENKINS.
