1 Claim.

This invention relates to an outer garment, more particularly to an outer garment of the belt ype for womens wear.

It is well known that some women prefer to have the belt on their outer garment just below the bust, while others want the belt much lower on the body, and it is the aim of this invention to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an outer garment for womens wear whereby the belt forming means thereof may be releasably coupled thereto at various elevations relatively to its front or back to thereby provide for the contracted portion of the garment to be located at the point desired by the wearer.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an outer garment for womens wear having its front or back formed with spaced rows of spaced selectable coupling devices for releasably attaching to said front or back, at selected levels, belt forming means for contracting a part of the sides and back and for stretching a part of the front of the body of the garment, and with said coupling devices further ornamenting the dress.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an outer garment for womens wear which is distinctive and attractive when worn, capable of being readily contracted and stretched at various points, between the bust and hips of the wearer to provide for the appearance of the waist of the garment at various levels, simple in its construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

Embodying the aims aforesaid and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of an outer garment for womens wear in accordance with this invention when in non-contracted position and further showing the belt-forming or contracting means for the garment broken away,

Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the garment when contracted at a point thereof situated below the bust and above the hips of the wearer,

Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the garment showing one of the belt-forming means attached at one end to and detached at its other end from the front of the garment.

An outer garment for womens wear, in accordance with this invention, may be in-the form of a one-piece dress, a two-piece dress, a blouse or jacket and by way of example it is illustrated in the form of a one-piece dress.

With reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the onepiece dress is generally indicated at 4 and it includes a one-piece body part 5 comprising a shoulder forming part 6, a combined bust and waist forming part 1, a hip forming part 8, a skirt forming part '9, a pair of oppositely disposed sleeve forming parts I0 and an opening H in its upper portion for the passage of the head and neck of the wearer when the dress is to be worn. The length of the body. part 5 may be as desired and the skirt forming part 9 is shown as flared.

Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 illustrate only the combined bust and waist forming part I, the hip forming part 8 and the skirt forming part 9. Figures 4 and '7, which are rear elevations of the dress, have the back thereof indicated at I l The body part of the garment is to have secured thereto a plurality of spaced rows of spaced superposed. couplers lengthwise thereof. The rows may be secured to the front or the back of the dress. Each plurality of correlated rows may be disposed upon opposite outward inclinations, at oppositely disposed outwardly directed curves or in spaced parallel relation. The numbers of couplers of a row may consist of two or more.

With reference to Figure 1, a pairof rows of couplers indicated at A, B are secured tothe front of the dress. The couplers of the row A are indicated at l2 and those of the row B at 13. The couplers of each row are disposed in super-posed spaced aligned relation. The number of the couplers of each row will be nine and said rows are arranged in parallel spaced relation. The rows A and B will be so disposed on the front of the garment as to be arranged between the breast and abdomen of the wearer when the garment is worn. Although the number of couplers of a row A or B is referred to as being nine in number, it is to be understood that such number may be increased or decreased. The couplers I2, I3 may be of any suitable type and are shown by way of example as buttons. The row A of couplers is spaced from one side and. the row B of couplers is spaced from the other side of the lengthwise median of said front. The couplers I2 horizontally align with the couplers I3. The couplers may or may not provide ornamentations for the front of the garment.

With reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is correlated with the garment and for coaction with selected couplers of the rows of couplers, a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element of belt-like form, which may consist of a continuous belt or formed of a pair of sections and by way of example the said element is illustrated as being formed of a pair of oppositely extending sections, which when active correlate with selected couplers to contract the sides and back of body part 5 at the desired point. The said sections are pulled rearwardly in opposite directions to stretch an intermediate portion of the front and contract an intermediate portion of the sides and back of the body part 5 to the desired extent and are then tied together at the back of body part 5 to maintain the said intermediate portion of the front stretched and the said intermediate portions of the sides and back contracted. The said sections are formed of any suitable flexible material of the desired width and length having a belt-like effect. The length of said sections will be such as to enable them to be tied together in a bow located at the back of the body part 5 and are held in active position,

When the sections are tied together they are pulled from the front to the back of the body part 5 in opposite directions, which results in the stretching of an intermediate portion of the front and to contract an intermediate portion of the sides and back of the body part 5 to the desired extent. The sections of the said combined garment contracting, stretching and waist band forming element are indicated at I4, I5 and each of which at its outer end is provided with a plurality of attaching means, for selected coaction with a selected coupler, and by way of example the said plurality of attaching means is shown in the form of a plurality of endwise aligned buttonholes I5. The said sections I4, I5 are termed combined garment stretching, contracting, retaining and waist band forming means, as they function to simultaneously stretch, contract, and

retain respectively the front, the sides and back of a selected portion of the body part 5 and to releasably maintain such portion in stretched and contracted positions.

When the combined garment contracting and waist band forming element, or what may be termed a belt forming means, is formed from a single member, its end terminal portions will be formed in the manner as the outer end terminal portions of the sections I4, I5. When the single member is used it is passed around the body part 5 with the end terminal portions arranged at the front of the garment and pulled forwardly to an extent to provide for the desired contraction of the back and sides of the garment and then one of the attaching means at each terminal portion is engaged with a coupler. The coupling connection between the selected couplers and the selected attaching means Will be such as to stretch the ill front of the garment and maintain the sides and back of the garment contracted.

The said sections I4, I5 may, if desired, consist of a material similar to the material of said body part 5 and also may be of a contrasting color or a color corresponding to the color of said body part. This statement applies when the belt forming means consists of but a single member.

When the sections I4, I 5 are in one of their active positions the sides and back of the garment will appear as shown by Figure 2 and that portion of the garment between the selected couplers, as shown by Figure 1, will be stretched. This statement applies when the single member is employed in lieu of the sections I4, I5.

With reference to Figure 4, the rows of couplers are indicated at C, D. The couplers of the row C are designated I1 and the couplers of the row D at I8. The rows C, D are secured to the back II of the body part of the garment. The rows 0, D are spaced from opposite sides of the lengthwise median of the body part of the garment. The number of the couplers of the rows C, D are shown at three, but it is to be understood that this number can be increased or diminished The rows C, D are disposed in. parallel spaced relation. A combined garment contracting and waist band forming element of the form shown by Figures 1 and 2 and indicated at I4, I5, are shown as correlated with selected couplers of the rows C, D.

With reference to Figure 5, a pair of rows of couplers as shown are designated E, F. The couplers of the rows E, F are designated I9, 20 respectively. The row E is arranged in proximity to one side and the row 29 in proximity to the other side at the front of the body part of the garment. The row E is of angle form and this statement applies to the row F. The rows E, F are oppositely disposed, and each row inclines outwardly from its center towards each end. It is to be understood that a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element is to correlate with selected couplers of the rows E, F.

With reference to Figure 6, two rows of couplers designated at G, H are shown attached to the front of the dress adjacent the sides of the lengthwise median of the said front. The couplers of the rows G, H are indicated at 2I, 22 respectively and the number of the couplers of each of said rows is two. It is so correlated with a selected coupler of the rows G, H a combined contracting and waist band forming element of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2, and which is indicated I4, I5.

With reference to Figure 7, there is shown as attached to the back II of the garment, a pair of oppositely disposed outwardly curved rows I, J of couplers. The couplers of the row I, J are indicated at 23, 24 respectively. The rows I, J are spaced from opposite sides of the lengthwise median of the back of the body part of the garment. There is shown correlated with selected couplers of the rows I, J a combined garment contracting and stretching element 25 in the form of a short belt 26 provided adjacent each end with a buttonhole 21 for the purpose of connecting the belt 26 to opposed selected couplers of the rows I, J. Preferably the belt 26 will be elastic.

With reference to Figure 8, the front of the body part of the garment will have attached thereto, oppositely disposed outwardly curved rows K, Lof couplers arranged adjacent opposite sides of the lengthwise median of the garment. The couplers of the rows K, L are indicated at 28, 29 respectively. There is correlated with two selected couplers of the row K and a pair of selected couplers of the row L, a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element 3|] of belt-like form, which may consist of a single member or a pair of members and the ends of the single member or the forward ends of the two members will be provided with a pair of buttonholes 3|, 32, one arranged over and not aligning with the other.

With reference to Figure 9, the front of the garment is shown as having attached thereto, parallel spaced rows of couplers designated M, N, O and P. The said rows are spaced adjacent from opposite sides of the lengthwise median of the front of the garment. The couplers of the rows M, N, O and P are indicated at 33, 34, 35 and 36 respectively. There is correlated with selected couplers of the rows M, N, O and P, a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element 31 of belt-like form, which may be a single member or a pair of members. The element 31 has two spaced pairs of buttonholes. The buttonholes of each pair are arranged in spaced horizontal alignment. The buttonholes of one pair are designated 38, 39 and the buttonholes of the other pair at 40, 4|. The

38, 39 correlate with selected couplers of the rows M, N and the buttonholes 40, 4| corre late with selected couplers of the rows 0, P.

It is to be understood that in lieu of providing a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element with buttonholes for correlating with the couplers, that each end of such element may be provided with one or more loops for correlating with the couplers and with reference to Figure 10 an end portion 42 of a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element 33 is provided with a single loop 44 for the purpose of slipping over a coupler, whereby element 42 will be connected in active position to the garment.

In lieu of providing the garment with couplers in the form of buttons, the garment indicated at 45, Figure 11, may be provided with buttonholes arranged in the manner as the couplers aforesaid. In Figure 10 one of these buttonholes is indicated at it. The combined garment contracting and waist band forming element of beltlike form indicated at M will have its ends provided with buttons for correlation with the openings 46. Only one of these buttons is shown and it is indicated at 48.

It is to be understood that the means on the garment, which are to correlate with a combined garment contracting and waist band forming element for the purpose of stretching and contracting the garment, may be of any suitable type and this statement applies to the means on said element which correlates With the said means on the garment.

What I claim is:

In a garment having a waist portion and a connected nether portion, a plurality of vertically arranged rows of fastener elements positioned on the garment and extending above and below the waist line thereof, a belt extending across part of the body and having end portions provided with longitudinally spaced cooperating fastener elements adapted to be selectively secured to said first-named fastener elements whereby horizontal and vertical adjustment of said belt is provided.
