RODOLPHUS L. WEBB, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO LANDERS, FBARY & CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 230,374, dated July 20, 1880.
Application led May 19, 1880.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RoDoLPHUs L. WEBB, ofN ew Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invent-ed a new Improvement in I nkstands; and l do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection.
with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference markedv thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and ro which said drawings constitute part oi' this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a front view; Fig. 2, a top view. This invention relates to an improvement'in that class ofinkstands which consist ofafount arranged upon a holderor platform, the object being to provide a convenient means for opening or closing the mouth ot' the fount; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinatter described, and particularly recited in 2o the clailns.
A is the base or platform, here represented as arranged for two ink-founts, B C. These lfounts rest in a recess in the base, or are otherwise arranged to be supported and guided in a horizontal plane. Above the tounls is a bar, D, supported from the base, and on this bar a pivot, a, is arranged to take a central bearing in the top ot' the fount, and so that while it holds the l'onnt in its place it permits it to turn 3o in a horizontal plane. The foun ts are` provided with mouths B C', the mouths opening upward, so that when the founts 'are turned to bring their mouths at one side, as seen in Fi g. l` the said mouths will come beneath astationary cover, E, and so that when the founts are turned partially around the mouth wlll be brought to the fron t, as seen at the right, Fig.
2, which is the condition for use.
The covers E should be made self-adjusted, 4o and this is best done by arranging them in an (No model.)
arm, F, extending from the bar D, and so as to have a slight vertical play, the lower edge of the cover slightly beveled, as at d, so that when the fount is turned to bring the mouth beneath the cover the edge of the month will readily pass beneath and slightly raise the cover, thus allowing the cover to rest equallyY on all sides and so as to completely close the mouth. y
The cover may be provided with a spring to 5o give it a pressure; but with a loose vertical arrangement of the cover. as shown in Fig. l, the weight of the Acovers sufficient for all practical purposes. f
The i'ounts may be arranged in a stand 55 singly or with several on the same stand.
I do not broadl v claim an ink-fount arranged to revolve upon a horizontal plane, as such, I am aware, is not new, neither do I broadly1 claim an ink-fount arranged so that the mouth 6o is closed by a partial revolution ot' the fount.
I claim- 1. An inkstand having the fountconstructed with a mouth, C, projecting from one side and arranged to rest on the base, with a pivot at the top, so that the fount may be turned or revolved in a horizontal plane, combined with a stationary cover, beneath which the mouth is brought, substantially as described. y
2. An in'kstand having the fount constructed 7o with a mouth upon one side and arranged to be turned or revolved in a horizontal plane, with a stationary cover, beneath which the mouth is brought, the said cover arranged to be vertically self-adjusting on the mout-h of the fonnt, substantially as described.
