ALBERT H. GusoSKEY A TORNEY Patented Nov. 10, 1942 UNlTE eras ears HAND TOOL Missouri Application September 27, 1939, Serial No. 296,744
2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to manually operable or so-called hand-tools. More particularly, this invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in hand-tools of plier type especially, though not exclusively, adapted for optometrist and oculist use, our invention having for its object the provision, as a new article of manufacture, of a readily and conveniently manipulated plier so constructed as to enable and facilitate in clear open vision wire-bending and frame shaping operations by the optometrist or oculist in the construction and fitting of eyeglasses, spectacles, and the like.
And with the above and other objects in View,
our invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 illustrates in perspective a tool constructed in accordance with and embodying our invention in operative association with the frame of a pair of eye-glasses;
Figures 2 and 3 are side and front elevational views, respectively, of the tool;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, of the tool;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view of the tool in gripping association with a portion of th eye-glass frame; and I Figure 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the tool, taken approximately along the line 66, Figure 3.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a I? preferred embodiment of our present invention, the tool comprises a pair of co-operable members A, B, each constructed of forged stee1 or other suitable preferably metallic material.
The member A includes preferably integrally 3 grooved or arcuate, as shown, in conformation with the general curvature of the rounded wire w of an eye-glass frame C, and the bifurcated head 2 having at its base an oblique wall, as at f, for purposes presently appearing.
The member B includes also preferably in- 55 tegrally a hand-grip 4 bowed or arcuate in symmetry with, and co-operably opposed to, the handgrip l, a longitudinally extending head 5 flattened and reduced in thickness for snugly fitting for scissor-like movement between, and, as by a suitable upset pin or rivet l0, pivotally or hingedly joined to, the tines a of the head 2 and having a flat front face for flatwise engaging or impinging upon the first jaws rear end face e, and a laterally outwardly presented or forwardly offset second jaw 6 comprising a nose or bill g having a flat upper face It and a projecting lip i crosswise grooved or arcuate, as shown, for wire-gripping cooperation with the opposingly grooved lip c of the jaw 3, the jaw 6 being so sized and shaped relatively to the jaw 3 as to flatwise impinge at its face it upon the face d when the members A and B are in closed gripping relation upon a wire w, and the member B being provided at the base, and upon opposite sides, of the head 5 with oblique shoulders 11' for likewise engaging, in movement limiting relation of the members A and B, upon the base wall f.
Being so co-operatively constructed and joined, in use, a wire to of an eye-glass or spectacle frame F may be securely gripped, as shown in Figures 1 and 5, by and between the groved lips c and i of the jaws 3 and 6, respectively, and the frame F manipulated or bent to any desired contour or adjustment to fit particular facial measurements or requirements, the tool conveniently enabling the holding and manipulation of the frame F in such manner that the frame F is presented toward, and in the full view of the operator for facilitating accurate and precise bending and adjusting operations. 7
Further, the tool enables the operator to firmly grip the frame Fin such manner as to avoid marring or scratching of the frame and injury or breakage of the glass lenses, the tool readily opening to disengage or release the work as soon as closing pressure upon the handles l is removed.
The tool is simple and durable in form and structure, may be inexpensively constructed, and is exceedingly efficient in the performance of its intended functions.
It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the tool may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand-tool comprising a pair of complementary members pivotally connected at their outer extremities, one of said members including a hand-grip portion, a head intermediate the hand grip portion and the pivoted end, and a jaw extending laterally outwardly from, and in the plane of, the head and at its outer end provided with a depending lip having an arcuate gripping face, and the other of said members including an opposed hand-grip portion, a head intermediate the hand grip portion and the pivoted end, and a second jaw extending laterally outwardly from, and in the plane of, the second head in complementary relation to the first jaw and provided with an outwardly presented arcuate gripping face for juxtaposition to, and workengaging co-operaticn with, the first gripping face.
