UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SANFORD S. BURR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING OR CABINET BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,105, dated July 20, 1880.
Application filed May I9, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SANFORD S. BURR, of Chicago, Cook county, in the State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or Cabinet Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that kind of .folding bedsteads in which there is combined the bedstead, so that it may be lifted off whenever it is desired to unfold the bedstead. This is objectionable for several reasons. It must be lifted off or put on each time the bed is unfolded or folded, and, being separate from the bedstead, it is liable to become mislaid or damaged and is in the way. To remedy this I now make the top a part of the frame or case and hinge it to that part of the frame which forms the head-board when the bed is unfolded, and I so arrange it that it will, when the bed is unfolded, drop down toform a part of the head-board, an opening in that portion of the frame being formed which at this time is filled by the cover. The cover is lifted when the bed is about to be folded up, and constitutes then a cover for the upper ends of the bedsections, and the place left vacant by it in the head-board part of the frame or case constitutes a ventilating-opening.
The nature of my improvement will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedstead folded up. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same unfolded. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the head-board part of the structure, showing. the hinged cover or top in two positions.
The case or frame is shown at A and the two sections of the bed-frame at B O, the inner section pivoted to the case at a and the two sections hinged together at b. These parts are described in my aforesaid Letters Patent, and require no further description here.
The back A of the frame or case A constitutes the head-board, and to it is attached, by hinges c, at the proper elevation to constitute a cover for the ends of the bed-sections when the bedstead is folded up, the top board or cover D. In the head-board is formed at this point an opening, 01, of proper size to receive the cover D when the latter is allowed to drop. The cover is of size to permit it to pass between the side posts of the case A, and when it drops it enters and fills snugly the opening d, as indicated in Fig. 2 and by dotted lines in Fig. 3. When lifted it constitutes a cover for the upper ends of the bed-sections, the opening 61 being in this case unfilled and serving as a ventilating-passage.
If it is desired to unfold the bed, the parts being in the position indicated in Fig. 1, the cover or top board, D, is first raised or turned up on its hinges far enough to permit the bed to be turned down on its pivots a, and it (the cover) is then allowed to drop, passing between the posts of the case and entering and filling the opening 01 in the head-board.
By this arrangement I dispose of the cover in the most convenient way, making it a part of the structure. I obtain a head-board which, while presenting a practically unbroken surface when the bed is lowered, is open for purposes of ventilation when the bed is folded up, and I economize material and save expense of construction.
Having described my improvement, what'I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the folding bedstead and the case provided in its head-board portion with an opening, as described, of a top board hinged to said head-board portion at the upper part of the said opening therein, and arranged and operating, substantially as set forth, to cover the upper ends of the bed-sections when the bed is folded and to drop down and cover or fill the head-board opening when the bed is lowered.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1880.
SANFORD S. BUBR.
Witnesses F. E. GARsLEY, I J. SPEYER.
