Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOM O. MEMERY, OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA.
DRESS-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,032, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed March 17, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TQM O. MEMERY, of Key West, Monroe county, and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Dress- Guard, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved ladies dress-guard which will prevent the dress from clinging to and exposing the form when walkin g against the wind. V
The invention consists of 1 a rounded garment, stiffened by a number of flexible strips running from top to bottom, which garment is worn over the abdomen and is held by bands passing around the waist.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1.
represents the manner of wearing my improved dress-guard. Fig. 2 .is a front view of the same with part of the covering material removed.
Arounded garment, A, is made of some suitable fabric B, and is stiffened by a series of strips-G, of whalebone, steel, or some other suitable flexible material, which strips pass from top to bottom, and are bent so that the garment has a convex shape and fits closely onto the abdomen. In the middle several strips are placed close together, so as to give and attached, to thetop of the garment and by a band, E, one end of which is fastened to the garment and the other end of which is provided with a button-hole, into which the (No model.)
button F passes after the band E has been passed around the body a short distance below the waist, so as to prevent the displacement of the dress-guard when assuming a sitting position.
The bands or belts D and E may be made of elastic or of any other suitable'material.
This dress-guard is preferably worn over the first skirt, thus avoiding the necessity of wearing several skirts in order to prevent the dress from clinging so very close to the body, as it does in stormy and windy weather, and thus prevent the form from being exposed.
This dress-guard can be made of any desired size, but should in all cases reach down below the abdomen.
The stiffening-strips may be arranged obliquely or crossing each other, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a ladys dress-guard made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a rounded garment stiffened by a series of flexible strips running from top to bottom, and bands for holding said dress-guard to the body.
2. The combination, with the rounded garment A, of the strips 0, of flexible material, and the bands D E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
TOM OWEN MEMERY.
