Description
AM. PHOTO-LITHO. CD. NX (OSEDRNE'S PROCESS) UNITE STATS ATENT OFFICE.
GELSTON SANFORDfOF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
STEAM-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,981, dated February 15, 1859.
lTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GELsroN SANFORD, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being Ahad to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section and, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of the cross head connecting rod, and piston rod.
The nature of my invention relates to the elongating, the cylinder by which means it becomes a part of the frame, used for the support of the crank shaft, and so constructed, that when bored out, forms a guide, and rest, for the cross-head, to which the piston rod and connecting rod are attached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make my cylinder of anydesired length, and size, A, the cylinder, and B, the elongated sides, which are also made tubular, but of lessdiameter than the cylinder, as the case may require, and of such length as may be necessaryto accommodate the piston and connecting rods D, and F. I make an opening or slot as G, for crank and connectingrod to work in and another below, as I, Fig. 2, for the convenience of geting at the cross head, and adjust it to the piston, and connecting rods, and also for adjusting the screws l, 2, 3, Figs. l, 2 and 3. The screws l, Fig. 2, are for securing the upper head H, to its place and for the con.-
venience of readily getting at them, in putting up or taking down the engine. I bore out the elongated part, on a line corresponding to the sides of the cylinder which gives a true line, for the cross head E, to work in, and in case it should wear to become loose I have so constructed the cross head E, that two of its scales are made adjustable.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show the wedge Ipieces which serve as tighteners, and the manner of attaching the piston and connecting rods F and D, Fig. 5, being a cross section of the cross head E. The projections J, are cast with the cylinder, and openings are left for the boxes K, which are secured by the keys L; O the stung box.
I make all the connections in the ordinary way.
he great advantages of this mode of oo nstruction are, in the use of the cylindrical form of the cross head E, working in a cylinder, making the whole more simple and cheaper and less liable to get out of order, and also in the manner of attaching the upper head H.
Having thus fully described my improved engine what I claim as new, and desire to `secure by Letters Patent is- I claim the inside head H, in combination with the cross head E, and elongated cylinder A, B, when constructed and operated in the manner and for the purposes above specified, as an article of manufacture.
GELSTON SANFORD. Witnesses J. H. MERRILL, A. F. MOULDEN.
