Be it known that I, ROBERT H. THOMP- SON, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrappers or Envelopes for Bottles, Jars, and other fragile articles, of. which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient wrapper or envelope, composed of or comprising elastic or other material suitable for packing, and provided with fastening devices, and adapted for use with glass bottles, jars, or other fragile articles of various sizes and shapes, in lieu of the paper wrappers and card-board boxes commonly used.
To this end my. invention consists in a wrapper fora bottle or other article, composed of asheet or piece of elastic packing material and a cover, to which the. sheet of packing material is secured at one edge only, andwhich' extends beyond the said packing material,-so as to form flaps for securing the wrapper upon a bottle or other article, whereby I produce a Wrapper whicb may be folded or rolled around a bottle or other article and readily fastened, and one which will protect the article so fully as to greatly reduce the liability of its breakage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan ofa wrapper or envelope embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a modified construction; and Fig. at is a perspective view, illustrative of the application of the wrapper or envelope to a bottle.

A designates a-sheet or piece of card-board or equivalent material provided with or comprising elastic material-as, for instance, granules or chips of cork secured by an adhesive substance, such as glue. v
B designates fastening devices,'consisting of flaps, which may be made of paper or other suitable material, and extend beyond the ends and one side of the card-board A, one or more being provided with mucilage or other adhesive substance at, to provide for readily fasteningit. g
In Fig. 3 a sheet of corrugated paper is employed in lieu of the card-board and granules or chips of cork.
The flaps B are parts of a sheet of paper covering the back of the card-board A and corrugated paper A, respectively, and secured to one edge thereof.
It will be observed that inasmuch as the cover is outside the packing material it will, when wrapped about a bottle, describe a larger circle or have a greater circumference than the said packing material, and when the latter is secured to the cover at one edge only one may move upon the other and prevent the Wrinklin g of the packing material or the straining of the cover.
To apply the wrapper or envelope, I preferably lay the bottle or other article upon it, roll or fold the wrapper or envelope around it tightly, as represented in Fig. 3, moisten the mucilage a, and press down the flaps. v
By folding the other flaps over the bottom and top of the bottle or other article the wrapper or envelope will be additionally secured in place.
Thus I form a neat package which, through its elasticity, will protect the bottle or other article inclosed by it from injury.
Numbers of these wrappers or envelopes laid out flat, or with the flaps folded back, may be laid together and transported with facility.
In lieu of the granules or chips of cork, corrugated paper or strips or pieces of felt or other yielding material suitable for packing may be used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
