Description

. B MI'CHAELS. Rocking Chair.
No. 229,733. Patented Jrulyv6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL MICHAELS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boeking-Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specitication.
rEhe object I have in view is to construct that class of rocking-chairs having the side rails of the seat formed into rockers which rock upon the stationary base, and having a spring-connection between the stationary base and the rocking body, so that they will be capable of an easy revolving movement upon such base, enabling the occupant of the chair to turn around in anydirection without moving the hase, and thus saving greatly the carpet from the wear which results from movi-n g the entire chairbase and all-around on casters.
My invention consists in the construction of a chair of the character above described wherein shall be combined a supported base, an intermediate frame, placed between the body and base and centrally pivoted upon the base, so as to be capable of continued revolution thereon, anti-friction rollers secured in the intermediate frame and rolling upon the base, and a rockin g-chair frame having curved rockers made by the side rails of the seat, and a spring-connection between the chair and the intermediate frame, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation ofthe rocking-chair complete. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section through one of the rockers of the chair and through one side of the base and of the intermediate frame, and Fig. 3 represents a plan of the intermediate or turn-table frame and of the base.
Like letters in the several n' gures ofthe drawings designate like parts.
A is the chair proper, the rockers a of which form the side rails for the seat. B is an intermediate square frame, and C is the base, consisting of a circular plate which rests upon a series of feet, c.
The frame B has a central longitudinal bar,
b, and through ahole in this and in the base C is passed a pivotal bolt, d, which holds said frame B centrally upon said base C.
The exterior rails, which form the frame B,
are vertically slotted through their centers,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL MICHAELS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,733, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filed June 7, 1879.
and into these slots are pivoted small wheels c, which will ride upon the rim-face of base C, and will permit an easy rotation of said frame thereon, in the'manner of a turn-table.
The rockers a of chair A rest upon the side rails of frame B, and have projecting tongues to their curved bottom faces, which enter the wheel-slots in said frame-rails, and will hold the rockers centrally in position thereon, and each rocker is yieldingly secured upon the side rails of frame B by an elastic strap or spring, f, and to the external edge of each rocker is secured a downwardly projecting curved plate, g, which forms a shoulder-delige against its supporting-rail of frame B and holds the rocker parallel thereon.
Such a chair as described will have an easy rocking motion, and yet will permit to change the direction of the seat Without moving the whole chair, whereby the frequent shiftingand turning, as usual with other rocking-chairs, is dispensed with, and the floor-carpet is saved considerable ot' the wear and tear otherwise caused by such furniture. h
The construction of this chair is very simple and durable, and will add but little to the cost of manufacture compared with other chairs of similar construction.
I am aware that an ordinary rocking-chair with raised seat and rockers separate from the side rails of the seat. has been mounted upon a platform revolving on a stationary base and secured from lateral displacement on such platform by pins and curved slotted guides; and I do not claim such a chair, nor do I claim, broadly, the combination of a stationary base, a revolving intermediate platform, and any rockin g-chair secured to and rocking upon such platform; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a rocking-chair, the combination of the base C, the intermediate revolving frame, B, secured by central pivot, d, the anti-friction rollers e, the rocking-chair frame A, having curved rockers a, made by the side rails of the seat, and the spring-connection f between the chair and intermediate frame, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
EMIL MICHAELS.
