2 Claims.
This invention relates to a package more particularly designed and adaptable for use in the shipment of various articles by mail.
The package in accordance with this invention Will be found to be simple and economical to construct and, at the same time, by virtue of its construction will' be ecient and durable in use, will aord maximum protection to contained articles and will be adaptable for reuse as often as may be desired.
Generally speaking the Vpackage according to this invention may be constructed of any suitable material, as heavy paper stock, cardboard, or the like, andfWill be constructed from a single piece or blank by bending and securing at the corners in any Vsuitable manner, preferably by the use of metal strips provided With spuds for engagement With material of the package.
More specically the package according to this invention will be so constructed as to provide a body portion of desired dimensions and oppositely folding covers adapted to fold one over the other to eifect closure of the package. The oppositely fold-ing covers Will be characterized by the fact that the under cover will be provided with means for securing thereon a slip or card bearing an address, While the outer cover will be provided with an opening or window through which the address Will be readable; and that the outer cover will be adapted to be engaged by means carried by the body of the package for securing the covers in closing relation to the body of the package.
Having now indicated in a general Way the nature and purpose of this invention, I will proceed to a detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank for the construction of a package embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a package, formed from the blank shown in Figure 1, with the under cover in partially closing position.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the box shown in Figure 2 with the covers in fully closing position.
In the blank shown in Figure 1, I indicates the bottom of the package, 2, 2 indicate the end Walls and 3, 4, respectively, indicate the front and back Walls. The end walls and the front and back Walls are integral with the bottom, but their lines of juncture with the bottom are desirably creased to enable folding, as indicated by the dotted lines 2', 2' and 3', 4' to form the body A of the package, the end Walls being secured to the front and back walls by means of the metal strips 5, 5.
The under cover is formed by an extension 5 from the front Wall 3 of the body, the line of juncture 6' being desirably creased to facilitate the opening and closing movement of the cover. Extensions l, 'I from the ends of the cover, their lines l', 'I' of juncture with the cover being de sirably creased, form end flanges for insertion Within the body when the cover is closed. The free edge of the cover 6 is recessed as at 3, to enable insertion of a finger to facilitate its opening from closed position, and adjacent the fold line 6 the cover is apertured centrally, as at 9, for the passage of a fastening member It secured to the outer surface of the front Wall 3. The under cover 6 is also slit, as at II, to form the longitudinally extending ear I2.
The outer cover is formed by an extension I3 from the rear wall 4 of the body, the lineof juncture I3' being creased to facilitate closing and opening of the cover. Extensions I4, I4 from the ends of the cover I3, their lines of juncture I4', I4 being desirably creased, form end anges, and an extension I5 from the free edge of the cover, the line of juncture I5' being desirably creased, forms a front flange. The end flanges and front flange are adapted to be secured together by means of metal strips IS when the box is assembled. An aperture I1 is formed in the cover I3 at its forward edge for the passage of the fastening means I0 and the front flange I5 is recessed as at I8. The cover I3 may, if desired, be solid, or, if desired, may be provided With a window aperture I9, which, if desired, may be closedby a section of transparent material, as, for example, Cellophane, or variously with a plurality of Window apertures similar to the aperture I9.
TheA package A, Figure 2, is readily formed from the blank, above described, by folding on the various fold lines and securing with the metal strips 5 and I6.
In use of the container the outer cover is opened and likewise the under cover and the article, or articles, to be packaged are inserted in the body of the package, which may desirably be lined with corrugated board. The under cover is then closed with its end anges Within ,the body and nally the outer cover is closed it is secured by bending over the fastening means, as shown in Figure 3.
Where the outer cover is apertured, a card or slip of paper 2l), bearing the address to which the container is to be delivered is placed on the under cover and held in place by the engagement of its end portion under the ear I9. The aperture in the outer cover, or one of the apertures, will align with the card 20 so that the address will be visible when the cover is secured; and desirably the card 2U will bear the return address of the sender on its under side, enabling the package to be addressed for return by mere reversal of the card.
The container according to this invention Will nd various use and will, for example, lend itself to the shipment of spectacles. As will be apparent, the container may be reused indefinitely and, especially, its addressing and re-addressing will be simplified and facilitated by the use of the card 2U. A
It Will be appreciated that it is not contemplated that this invention shall be limited in detail to the embodiment thereof as described herein for illustrative purposes, since various modification in detail may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A package formed by folding from a single creased blank comprising a body portion having front, back and end Walls and a bottom, corner fastening means for securing adjacent ends of said Walls together, an under cover member extending from one of the Walls of the body,
flanges depending from the opposite free edges of the under cover, the under cover and anges being so proportioned that said flanges will fit Within the body when the under cover is closed, an ear formed for the reception of an address card in the body of said under cover by slitting, an outer cover member extending from the Wall of the body opposite to that from which the under cover extends, flanges depending from the free edges of the outer cover and corner fastening means for securing adjacent ends of said anges together, said outer cover and anges being so proportioned that said flanges will fit Without the body when said outer cover is closed, said outer cover being provided With an elongated aperture revealing a portion of said under cover adjacent to said ear when said covers are closed.

A package formed by folding from a single creased blank comprising a body portion having front, back and end walls and a bottom, corner fastening means for securing adjacent ends of said Walls together, an under cover member eX- tending from one of the Walls of the body, anges depending from the opposite free edges of the under cover, the under cover and anges being so proportioned that said flanges will fit Within the body when the under cover is closed, an ear formed in the body of said under cover by slitting, an address card supported on said under cover and engaged by said ear, an outer cover member extending from the Wall` of the body opposite to that from which the under cover extends, anges dependingrfromrthe free edges of the outer cover and corner fastening means for securing adjacent ends of said anges together, said outer cover and flanges being so proportioned that said flanges will fit without the body When said outer cover is closed, said outer cover being provided with an aperture'revealing said address card.
