This invention relatesto fasteners for leggings of the type, more particularly adapted for use by workmen in foundries, machine shops, and the like, where sparks and molten particles are likely to strike them, and has for an object new and improved fasteners of this character.

In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one embodiment which my invention may assume, and in the drawing:

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the legging, showing fastening means therefor, with the upper fastening means about to be moved to engaged position, while Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the upper fastening means, with portions of the legging and fastening means broken away to more clearly disclose the construction, and illustrated in engaged position.

As shown in the drawing, the body portion of the legging is indicated generally by the reference character l0, and comprises a single piece of material such as leather, cut out at its lower central portion, as indicated at H. Fitted into the cutout II is an instep portion l2, which projects forwardly, and is adapted to cover the instep of the user, being secured in position in the cut-out by stitching I 3. The overlapping end I 4 of the legging is turned upon, and stitched to itself, by stitching I5, in such manner as to form an elongated pocket, preferably tapering from top to bottom, and adapted to accommodate a stiffening bar [6 of any suitable material, preferably nonmetal, secured in position by rivets H. The lower edge of the end M of the legging is cut out, as indicated at l8, and the end of the bar I 6 projects outwardly of the cut-out portion, as shown at l 9. At the opposite, or underlying end 20, of the legging, adjacent the lower part thereof, is a strip of material secured in position by rows of stitching 2|, definin a pair of spaced pockets 22, either one of which will snugly accommodate the projecting end [9 of the bar It, when the legging has been wrapped around the leg of the user.

The upper portion of the overlapping end M of the legging has fastened thereto, preferably by stitchin 23, an elongated piece of material 24, which projects laterally outwardly beyond the edge of the overlapping end M, to form a projecting flexible tab or flap 25.

Preferably secured somewhat inwardly of the tab end are hook-like fastening means, of any suitable material, preferably non-metal, including a body portion 26 secured to the tab 25 by rivets 21, an integrally formed curved intermediate portion 28, and an inclined end portion 29, the inner edge of the curved portion 28 being notched or recessed, as at 30, in such a wayas to form a cam surface 3|, leading into the notch 30.

The opposite, or underlying end 2! of the legging, adjacent the upper portion thereof, and at a level to dispose the upper edge substantially in line with the lower edge of the strip 24, has another strip of material 32, secured in position by rivets 33, and an upper row of rivets 34, the latter being spaced apart predetermined distances to provide a plurality of keepers with which the hook-like fastening means may be selectively engaged.

In use, the legging thus provided, is readily attachable-detachable, and when applied, is wrapped around the leg of the user to dispose both ends of the legging at the outside, with the end l4 overlying the end 20, and the projecting part IQ of the bar [6 engaged with one or the other of the pockets 22, as desired, while the flap 25 is manipulated so as to engage the hook-like fastening means with one ,or the other of the keepers 34, and thus a quick snug fit of the legging is obtained, the notched part 3!! receiving the related keeper in such a way that the hook-like fastening means is assured against accidental detachment, remaining attached even though the user kneels, or accidentally strikes the lower end of the legging against some obstruction, normally tending to force the bar in an upward direction, such upward movement because of the peculiar configuration of the hook-like fastening means causing the same to move somewhat in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 4, and thereby tending to more securely fasten, rather than to disconnect the same. The legging, however, may be readily removed, merely by grasping the flap or tab 25, and pulling the same upwardly, thereby imparting a somewhat counter-clockwise movement to the hook-like mechanism, causing the same to be cammed from engagement with its related keeper 34, and this same movement retracts the projecting part Hi from the pocket 22 in which it was placed, thus disconnecting the entire fastening means.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have accomplished at least the principal object of my invention, and it also will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the em- :ing: keeper means secured bodiment herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the invention is capable of uses and has advantages not herein specifically described, especially in connection with various kinds of clothing, and the like; hence it will be appreciated that the herein disclosed embodiment is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.

I claim:

1. Means for securing adjacent free end portions of clothing, and the like, comprising: keeper means secured to one of said end portions, and hook-like means carried by the other of said end portions, said hook-like means adjacent to, and

at the inner side of the bight thereof, having a recess for reception of said keeper means, when said hook-like means are in engaged position with respect to said keeper means, said recess in part being defined by a cam surface positioned to cam the said hook-like means into and out of engagement with said keeper means and thus facilitate manipulation of said keeper means by the user.

A legging of the overlapping type, compristo the upper part of the underlying portion, and hook-like fastening means carried by the upper part of the overlying portion, said hook-like means being movable in a plane substantially which the overlapped portions lie, and adjacent to, and along the inner side of the bight thereof, having a recess detachably accommodating said keeper means, said recess in part being defined by a cam surface and the end portion of said parallel to the plane in hook-like means being inclined, thus to facilitate one hand manipulation of the user in engaging or detaching said hook-like means; and means at the lower part of said legging for detachably securing the overlapped portions together, said lower fastening means including a projecting means upon the overlying portion, and pocket means upon said underlying portion for the reception of said projecting means, said hook-like fastening means and said projecting means being connected and simultaneously detachable when said hook-like fastening means are detached, said hook-like means being so proportioned and constructed that when engaged, upon upward movement of said overlying portion, said hooklike means tend to turn more securely to engaged position to thereby prevent accidental detachment.

3. Means for securing adjacent free end portionslof clothing, and the like, comprising: keeper means secured to one of said end portions, and hook-like means carried by the other of said end portions, said hook-like means adjacent to, and at the inner side of the bight thereof, having a recess for reception of said keeper means, when said hook-like means are in engaged position with respect to said keeper means, said recess being defined in part by a cam surface positioned to cam the said hook-like means into and out of engagement wtih said keeper means, and the end portion of said hook-like means being inclined, this facilitating manipulation of said keeper means by one hand of the user.
