Application october 8, 1940, Serial No. 360,213 9 Claims. 111. 221-102) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a self-feeding shaving brush.
More specifically the invention comprises the construction of a self-feeding shaving brush characterized by a shaving brush having a handle with a chamber at one end thereof for liquid shaving soap, bristles at the other end thereof, and a means for conveying the shaving soap from the chamber to said bristles in a manner to permit lather to be formed when desired.
Still further the invention proposes to characterize the means for conveying the shaving soap by a passage provided with a depressible plunger arranged in a manner to force the shaving soap from the chamber to the bristles when properly operated.
A further object of this invention proposes the provision of a means for fixedly closing the passage in a manner to prevent the shaving soap from being forced from the chamber when the shaving brush is shaken for removing excess Water therefrom.
A further object of this invention is the construction of a self-feeding shaving brush as mentioned which is simple and'durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The self-feeding shaving brush, according to this invention, includes a brush body III provided with bristles I I at one end and a chamber I2 at the other end. The chamber I2 is hollowed out of the end of the brush body III and is closed by means of a cover I3. Threads are arranged between the adjacent portions of the cover I3 and the brush body II] for maintaining the cover I3 in position across the open end of the chamber I2.
A means is provided for connecting the interior of the chamber I2 with the bristles II for the purpose of conveying the shaving soap contained within the chamber to the bristles. This means is characterized by a passage I4 consisting of a top offset end portion I I which continues into a main central portion M The main central portion I4 extends laterally entirely through the brush body III. The passage I l further continues into a bottom concentric portion I5 A plunger I5 is slidably mounted within the main central portion I4 of the passage I4 and has one end projected therefrom. The inner end of the plunger I5 is provided with a forwardly projecting tail portion I5 which is adapted to extend across the bottom end of the top offset end portion I I of the passage I4 for closing the same and preventing shaving soap from entering the main central portion M when the plunger I5 is urged inwards. A spring I6 is located within the main central portion W of the passage I4 and acts between the inner end of the plunger I 5 and a plug I! used for sealing the open end of the main central portion. The spring I6 acts to urge the plunger I5 into its extended position in which the forwardly projecting tail portion I5 thereof will not be projected across the bottom end of the top ofiset end portion I I of the passage I I.
A means is provided for preventing the spring I6 from shooting the plunger I5 out of the end of the main central portion [4 and for preventing plunger from turning with relation thereto. This means comprises a downwardly extended key I8 formed on the brush body III and which engages a longitudinal groove I9 formed in the plunger I5. The key I8 permits the plunger I5 to be freely urged inwards against the holding action of the spring I6. However, it acts to prevent the spring from urging the plunger I5 into a disengaged position with relation to the main central portion W of the passage It. The Construction is such that when the plunger I5 is urged inwards it will immediately close the bottom end of the top oiTset end portion I i of the offset and force the soap contained within the main central portion I into the bottom portion I4 of the passage to pass to the bristles I I.
A spring controlled blow ofi valve is located within the bottom portion 14 of the passage and is arranged to permit the soap to pass therethrough when the plunger is urged inwards but to prevent the soap from being sucked back into the main central portion I M of the passage I i when plunger is again moved outwards by the expansion of the spring It. This blow off valve is characterized by a ball 20 located within the top end of the bottom portion M of the passage and which engages against a complementary Valve seat 2|. A transverse wall 22 is located within the bottom portion l4' and carries an upwardly extending shank portion 22*. A spring 23 acts between the ball 20 and the transverse wall 22 for urging the ball 20 against the valve seat 2 I. This spring 23 has its top end coil bearing against the ball 20 and its bottom end coils encircling the shank portion 22 of the transverse wall 22. It is proposed that the topmost coil of the spring 23 be securely attached to the ball for preventing the same from being disengaged therefrom when the blow off valve is urged into its open position.
The bottom end of the bottom portion [4 of the passage [4 is closed by means of a plug 24 which carries a tubular stem 25. This tubular stem 25 has one of its ends connected with the interior of the bottom portion 14 of the passage l4 and its free end projected to the center of the bristles l I for causing the soap discharging therefrom to be applied directly to the center of the bristles. The self-feeding shaving brush is further provided with a means for locking the plunger I in its inwardly depressed position and for increasing the resistance of the blow off valve to prevent the discharge of soap therefrom when the brush bristles l l are being washed and the same is shaken for the purpose of removing excess water therefrom. This means comprises a rotative stem 26 arranged at right angles to the bottom portion [4 of the passage [4. The inner end of the stem 26 carries a cam 21 which engages the bottom end: of the transverse wall 22. The transverse wall 22 is slidably mounted Within the bottom portion [4 of the passage [4 and in a certain turned position ofthe stem 26 the cam 21 urges the transverse, wall 22 upwards to increase the tension of the spring 23 to more tightly seat the ball 20 upon its valve seat 2 l.
The stem 26further carries: a means for looking the plunger in its inwardly urged position for closing the bottom endof the top offset. portion M of the passage M. This means comprises a bolt 28 mounted upon an intermediate portion of the shaft 25 and locatedv within a recess lo formed in the brush body It. The plunger [5 is provided with complementary cutout 29 whichis aligned with bolt 28 in its inwardly urged position permitting the bolt 28 to enter this cutout when the shaft 26 is turned and so hold the plunger against again being urged outwards by the spring l6 until the shaft 26 is rotated to disengage the bolt 28 from the cutout 29.

The outer end. of the shaft 29 is provided with a knob 30 provided with sage of soap therethrough in spite of the fact that the transverse wall 22 extends completely across the bottom portion [6 of the passage M.
The operation of this invention is as follows:
The cover I3 is removed and the chamber l2 of the brush body is filled with shaving soap. The plunger I5 is depressed for closing the bottom end of the offset portion I l of the passage M and for forcing soap located within the main central portion 14 into the bottom portion I l to pass through the tubular stem 25 to the bristles ll. When the plunger 15 is urged inwards, soap passing from the main central portion M will blow the valve 20 off its valve seat 2| permitting the soap to pass therethrough. When the plunger I5 is released, the spring It will urge the plunger into its outwardly extended position and the plunger i5 is adapted to be compressed as many times as desired for the purpose of supplying the desired quantity of soap to the bristles ll.
After completion of the shaving operation, and when it is desired to Wash the bristles II, the plunger I5 is urged inwards and the knob 30 rotated for turning the shank 26 into a position in which its indicating pointer 3| will be aligned with the letter C of the scale 32. This will cause the cam 21 to urge the transverse wall 22 upwards increasing the tension of the spring 23 to more tightly seat the valve 20 upon its valve seat 2|. This rotation will also pivot the bolt 28 causing the same to enter the cutout 29- and maintain the plunger in its new position against the action of the spring I6. The bristles H may then be washed and shaken for removing the excess water therefrom Without the danger of the shaving soap passing through the passage [4 and nullifying the washing operation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1'. A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow off valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body andextending from one side, a cam on said stem beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow off valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow off valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on-s'aid stem beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow off valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by a top ofiset end portion continuing into a main central portion in turn continuing into a bottom portion.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow off valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stem beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow ofi valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by a top ofiset end portion continuing into a main central portion in turn continuing into a bottom portion, said main central portion being laterally extended completely through said brush body and housing said plunger.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow ofi valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stem beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow off valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into a main laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portion, said main central portion being laterally extended completely through said brush body and housing said plunger, and means for maintaining said plunger in position within said main central portion and for holding said plunger against turning.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow ofi valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stern beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow off valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into amain laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portion, said plunger being formed with a forwardly projected tail portion for closing the bottom end of the top offset end portion of the passage when said plunger is urged inwards.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and apassage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body at right angles through said passage and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting oil passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow 01f valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stem beneath said valve for increasing the resistance of said blow off valve when said stem is turned, and a bolt on said stem engageable with a cutout in said plunger when said plunger is pushed inwards and said stem is turned for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into a main laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portion, said blow ofi valve being located within the bottom portion of said passage.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow ofi valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stem for increasing the resistance of said blow ofi valve, and a bolt on said stem for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into a main laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portion, said blow ofi valve being located within the bottom portion of said passage, said blow off valve comprising a ball engageable upon a valve seat, a slidably mounted transverse wall bearing against said cam, and a spring operating between said ball and-wall for urging said ball upon said valve seat.

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body and extending from one side and when in an inward position cutting oiT passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow ofi valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, a cam on said stem for increasing the resistance of said blow ofi valve, and a bolt on said stem for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into a main laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portiomsaid blow off valve being located within the bottom portion of said passage, said blow ofi valve comprising a ball engageable upon a valve seat, a slidably mounted transverse wall bearing against said cam, and a spring 0perating between said ball and wall for urging said ball upon said valve seat, said cam being adapted to urge said transverse wall upwards and so in crease the tension of said spring;

A device of the class described comprising a body, a chamber, and a passage connecting said chamber with the exterior of said body, a plunger transversely mounted in said body and extending from one side and when in an inwardposition cutting off passage through said passage, resilient means for urging said plunger outwards, a spring controlled blow ofi valve closing said passage at a point beneath said plunger, a stem rotative in said body and extending from one side, acam on said stemfor increasing the resistance of said blow ofi valve, and a bolt on said stem for locking the plunger in a retracted position, said passage being characterized by an eccentric top end portion continuing into a main laterally extending central portion in turn continuing into a concentric bottom portion, said blow ofi valve being located within the bottom portion of said passage, said blow off valve comprising a ball engageable upon a valve seat, a slidably mounted transverse wall bearing against said cam, and a spring operating between said ball and wall for urging said ball upon said valve seat, said transverse wall being provided with passages extending therethrough for permitting soap to pass thereby.
