This invention relates to improvements in wringers.
A wringer according to the invention is equipped with a pair of pivotally mounted board or apron members disposed at opposite sides of the wringer and each movable angularly between a first position in which the respective board or apron member is adapted to function as a clothes guide board, and a second position in which the board or apron member extends below the usual lower roller of the wringer and is adapted to function as a water drain board.
The board or apron members may be operatively interconnected for joint angular movement in such wise that movement of either member into the first position is accompanied by movement of the other member into the second position, and vice versa. Alternatively, the board or apron members may be movable independently of one another, so that, if desired, both members may be retained simultaneously in the first position so as to serve as mangling boards.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a wringer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line IIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3, of a board or apron member shown detached from the wringer. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side view drawn to a larger scale of one end portion of the wringer, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary end view also drawn to a larger scale, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow :1: in Fig. 1.
As shown, Ill, l l denote the upper roller and the lower roller, respectively, of the wringer, journalled in end posts l2, l2". These posts are joined by a head rail l3 and are provided with clamps l4, M for attachment to a tub or other support. I5 denotes the operating crank-handle of the wringer.
A and B are pivotally mounted board or apron members disposed at opposite sides of the wringer and of similar construction. For convenience, description is given of the board member A only and the same reference characters are applied to the board member B with the addition of the exponent Each board member comprises a profiled metallic plate It pivotally suspended from a horizontal spindle H penetrating a curl l8 formed along the upper edge of the plate 16, said spindle being disposed parallel to and slightly above the level of the axis of the lower roller II, with the ends of the spindle secured in brackets l9 attached by screws 20 to the respective end posts l2, l2" of the wringer frame. The spindle 5 I1 is restrained. against turning movement by being bifurcated at eachend so as to straddle a raised part of the respective bracket IS, the spindle being locked to the brackets by set-screws 2!.
The upper portion 22 of each board member is so outwardly and downwardly curved from the spindle ll that, when the board member A is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the outer surface of the upper portion 22 forms a convex clothes-guiding surface curving upwardly and inwardly towards the nip of the rollers 10, l l, while the inner surface of the upper portion 22' of the other board member B forms a concave waterguiding surface of which the centre of curvature is located near the axis of the roller l l and which descends and merges into the lower portion of said board member located directly below the roller H, see Fig. 6. The lower portion 2-3 of the board member forms a tangential extension of the curved portion 22 and its lower edge is provided with a flange 24 which converges from the ends of the board member towards a central outlet 25 constituted by an interruption of the flange 24. The board member is also provided with end flange members 26 which project above and below the board member, being joined to the board member by generous external fillet portions 21 which merge smoothly into the board member. By reference to Fig. 6 it will be seen that, while the board member A provides a convex clothesguiding surface, the board member B provides a concave water-guiding surface, the flanges 24' and 26' providing water-retaining means and serving to guide the water to the outlet 25. Washers 28 strung on the spindle ll are interposed between the flanges 26 and the brackets I9.
The end flanges 20 are provided at their upper ends with stop-forming faces adapted, when the respective board member is in the position of the board member A in Fig. 6, to abut on the adjacent end post. The end posts may, if required, be slotted as at 29, Figs. 5 and 6, to permit entry into the end posts of projecting portions 30 on the upper ends of the flanges 26.
The board members are interconnected by a link 31 whereby movement of one board member into clothes-guiding position will automatically move the other board member into water-receiving and -discharging position.
For the purpose of holding the board members in their selected angular settings there is provided a peg 32 adapted to penetrate a hole in the end post id" and also a hole 33 or 33' in the adjacent end flange 26 or 26' of the board member.
What is claimed is:
1. In a wringer, in combination with upper and lower rollers, a pair of independently pivotally mounted board members of partly curved profile in cross section having convex and concave faces adjacent to their upper edges, and having, adjacent to their lower edges, plane faces tangential to said convex and concave faces, said board members being disposed at opposite sides of the wringer and each movable angularly between a first position in which the convex face of the respective board member is adapted to function as a clothes-guide board, and a second position in which the concave face of the said board member extends below the lower roller and is adapted to function as a water-drain, board.
2. The combination claimed in claim 1 including a link interconnecting the board members.
3. The wringer claimed in claim 1 in which the curvature of the upper portion of each board member is such that, when a board member is in the first position, the outer surface of said upper portion forms a convex clothes-guiding surface curving upwardly and inwardly towards the nip of the rollers, and, when said board member is in the second position, the inner surface of said upper ortion forms a concave water-guiding surface of which the centre of curvature is located near the axis of the lower roller and which descends and merges into the lower portion of said board member located directly below the lower roller.
4. The combination claimed in claim 1 in which each board member comprises an upper curved portion and a tangential extension the lower edge of which is provided with a water-retaining flange that converges from the ends of the board member towards a central water outlet consti- 20 tuted by an interruption of said flange.
