UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. PHILLIPS, OF WATFORD, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,457, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed February 17, 1880. Patentedin Canada January 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAMFRANGIS PHIL- LIPS, of Watford, in the county of Lambton, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front elevation of the improved invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish swings simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and safe in use.
The invention consists in constructing a swing of two pairs of crossed posts, strengthened by crossbars, the cap-box, the branched swinging bars, strengthened'by cross-bars, the basket, and the ropes, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A A are posts which cross each other at an obtuse angle at a little distance from their upper ends. The posts A are halved to each other, so that'they may brace each other, and are further strengthened by a cross-bar, B, attached to them at a little distance below their point of intersection.
Two pairs of posts, A, are used, and to their upper ends is secured a cap-box, O, by bolts D. The bolts D pass through the ends of the posts A, through the sides of the box 0, and through the upper ends of the swinging bars E. The swinging bars E, at a little distance from their upper ends, are forked, and the branches or arms thus formed are curved outward and downward, and then pass down parallel with each other. The arms of the bars E, a little below their bends, are connected by a cross-bar 'or round, F. The lower ends of the branches of the two swinging bars E are pivoted by bolts G to the opposite sides of the end parts of the basket or carriage H.
With this construction, as the swing is operated the basket H will always keep in a horizontal position, and thus make the exercise of swinging very pleasant.
The swing is designed to be operated by the occupants of the basket H by means of the ropes I, which are attached to the cross-bars F, and are grasped and pulled by the occupants of the opposite ends of the carriage, who, at the same time, press their feet against the foot-rest or against the other end part of the basket H.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A swing constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the crossed posts A, strengthened by cross-bars B, the cap-box O, the branched swinging bars E, strengthened by the cross-bars F, the basket H, and the ropes 1, whereby the basket is kept level when moved, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM FRANCIS PHILLIPS.
